Summary[edit]

Description Built in 1871, this Italianate-style building was designed by Stephen V. Shipman to house the American Exchange Bank. The building is clad in sandstone with pilasters at the corners and flanking pairs of window bays, rustication at the base, arched openings on the first and second floors, a main entrance on Pinckney Street with a decorative portico surround featuring ionic pilasters, a pediment, and a cartouche, with the words “American Exchange Bank” carved into the architrave over the doorway and two decorative sconces mounted on the pilasters, decorative window trim on the second floor and around the windows on the curved corner and extruded bays on the side, a cornice with rosettes, dentils, modillions, and brackets at the top of the facade, and a postmodern rear addition linked to the building on the second and third floors by a suspended glass-clad breezeway, which uses buff brick and stone to mimic the original building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and presently houses several commercial office tenants.
