English: LIBI_00312_10949; Mounted albumen photograph, landscape photo taken from a distance. This image depicts the Ghost Dance at the Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota. The foreground is empty, but a large group of people, approximately 450 Lakota, is visible in the middle ground. They all face away from the camera. Some appear to be holding hands. The tops of tipis are visible in the background. Handwritten notation in ink along the bottom of the mount reads: “450 Indians Dancing” and “Ghost Dance”. Handwritten ink notation along the right margin reads: “Pine Ridge, S.D.” The information for J.E. Meddaugh’s photography studio is printed on the back. Among the printing are some pencil notations. The most clear read: “Just before the Battle”, “One Photographer Killed” and “Ghost Dance”. This image was taken by J.E. Meddaugh in 1890.
