Purpose:[edit]
- standardize filenames
- reduce duplicates
- make flags super-accurate
- establish uniformity (among flags that borrow parts of other flags, flag variations that should have matching colors or dimensions, etc.)
- make public domain
To do:[edit]
- more complete "countries"/"sovereign entities" list
- nonprimary flags (ensigns, navy, military, civil, maritime, etc.)
- subnational flags (states, cantons, provinces, etc.)
- organization flags
- misc. flags
- "emblems"
- new page for coats of arms
Guidelines & Notes[edit]
- To save sanity, flags with common parts need to be updated in a certain order. E.g., before bothering to modify Saint Helena, we would want to make sure United Kingdom is already perfect, which in turn means we should first make sure Great Britain and Ireland are perfect, which yet again in turn means we should first make sure England and Scotland are perfect.
The path to perfecting Saint Helena: England, Scotland > United Kingdom (pre-Ireland), Ireland (St. Patrick's) > United Kingdom > Saint Helena - Strictly alphabetically ordered with no exceptions (and excluding any 'the's); e.g. Flag of the Republic of China goes in the R section, not I.
- Hopefully in the future we'll be able to symlink (or something) filenames in languages other than English from the different Wikipedias to a single file here on Commons, slowing English from killing other languages (and so much is tied to language) and making editing easier in any language. Until then just this much standardization should still be useful.

- Just saying because some aren't official because no governing body has made them such - this one could probably only be called unofficial because it's basically part of Australia. ¦ Reisio 19:16, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Heh, I guess I just mean that we should distinguish between unofficial because no governing body authorized it, unofficial because of administration by another country with their own flag, and from flags that are official, but only in countries that nobody recognizes. ¦ Reisio 19:22, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

- FOTW.net is a older mirror of the FOTW website, so I suggest that if y'all want to use try and use another mirror that is more current, like flagspot or CRW Flags. Zach (Smack Back) 22:32, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Flag of Argentina specifications[edit]
Hi.
The third link in the table (.doc file) is not an specification for Image:Flag of Argentina.svg but for Image:Flag of San Juan province in Argentina.gif which is the flag of San Juan Province.

Flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic / Western Sahara[edit]
I changed the name on line "Western Sahara" to "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic" which is more appropriate since the SADR is one of the two belligerents and thus the term Western Sahara doesn't refer solely to the SADR republic.
