Preperation[edit]

Most of the discussion is over at Commons:Picture of the Year/2009/Preparation. Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 10:11, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1[edit]

It is quite unfair that the large animation files don't get animated in the thumbnail galleries while the small ones do. This way, they are unlikely to attract any attention which is reflected by the current voting stats. -- 77.1.5.2 12:03, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but which animations do you mean? Will you list them here, please?--miya (talk) 06:41, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
File:Figure-Animation2.gif and File:Platonic Solids Stereo 1 - Tetrahedron.gif don't get animated in the thumbnails, while File:Geneva mechanism 6spoke animation.gif and File:Lockstitch.gif do. -- 77.1.5.2 07:36, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I made a gallery of animated files as below - it doesn't work either. I don't know why. One thing possible is to make an index of animated files.--miya (talk) 12:47, 21 May 2010 (UTC) Removed the sample gallery.--miya (talk) 06:14, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2[edit]

You can see the checking procedure in Commons talk:Picture of the Year/2009/Voting. The table of ALL the images is in Commons:Picture of the Year/2009/Results/R1/ALL/Table.--miya (talk) 03:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Too little finalists?[edit]

Mbz1 said "IMO should be 10% of the total number of the images." in my talk page.

I'm agree. --Micione (talk) 08:04, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm agree too. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 08:07, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So I request comment of those who are interested in POTY2009.--miya (talk) 03:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • On a different point of view I felt only "top 10 and category 1st images" may be not enough, while checking the result of Round 1. There are 3 Diagram images in the "top 10" that may mean - I'm afraid - the images in Diagram category (placed in the top of the Commons:Picture of the Year/2009/Galleries) might have got some advantage compared to those in other categories. To be fair to all categories, we'd better promote at least top 3 images of each category as well as the "top 10" to the finalist (that makes more than 30 finalist - nearly 4%).--miya (talk) 03:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • "10%" may be the same percentage in POTY2008. As the total number of FPs in 2009 are 890, the number of finalists would be about 89 files. We have checked nearly 25 images by now. In checking manually "5%" (about 45 images) is more easy and practical to achieve.--miya (talk) 03:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think the selection rules should be changed once the selection vote is done! Perhaps you're both right, but any change should wait for next year. --99of9 (talk) 06:12, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think change of selection rules is problematic, as I do not see how the voting could have depended on prior knowledge of selection rules. And I also think 16 finalists are too few. --Dschwen (talk) 18:10, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why is 16 not enough? If we have the best in each category that should be enough. If we want to save time we only need to check votes for the images with the most votes. If an image has 5 or 35 votes it will never beat one that has 45 approved votes. --MGA73 (talk) 19:14, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • We do not know that. I am more than sure that, if we are to have more finalists (10%) the result will change.--Mbz1 (talk) 20:30, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What I meant was that if we need to find 16 finalists we only have to check the votes of the images with the most votes. If one images in a category have 45 approved votes and only one image from that category will go to round 2 then there is no reason to check the votes for an image with "only" 5 or 35 votes. Just a suggestion to make it fast to find the final 16 images (or whatever) that should go in the final round. --MGA73 (talk) 23:02, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think that number of finalist is OK. Note that we have this year notable less voters (best pic in round 1 recieved 68 votes vs 260 last year). Even with these high number of voters some of 51 last year finalist recieved only 1 vote. With app. quarter of voters this year app. quater number of finalists may produce same results. --Jklamo (talk) 01:47, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • 2.5 points:

unindenting

1. i don't think we should set the number of finalists as a % of the total number of candidates (especially not when the number of fp/year keeps increasing!) the goal is to have a small, focussed , manageable list of "the best of the best" for R2 voting. the whole point of R1 voting is to narrow it down. we should think in terms of an absolute number that makes sense for this purpose; i.e.: not more than ___?

1.5 we probably should give more thought & attention to the R1 category winners; both in terms of selecting the categories, & in term of recognition of the winners. at least make up some category-winner badging, specific to each cat.

2. we need to change the R1 voting rules. it is a mistake to allow users to "vote for as many images as they want to" - per category. the limit should be set at 1 vote per cat.

under the existing rule, a small number of users with a dedicated interest in a specific topic/category/artist/set of images/etc. can give their preferred choices a "boost", which distorts the results.

this is (primarily) what is causing the peculiar effects noted by Miya (re: Diagrams).

1 user = 1 vote

we could conceivably set up a dual-vote system: 1 vote for category winner, & 1 vote for overall best. in some ways that would be fairer to the images, as some categories are (far!) more crowded than others.

if we do that tho, it effectively eliminates the need for R2 voting (as redundant).

i have no really strong opinion on whether getting rid of R2 would be of benefit or not. my only real concern is fairness (& accurately reflecting the will of the voters) in the results.

(maybe we should open a discussion page for this?)

Lx 121 (talk) 14:06, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am in agreement too, although it is likely too late to change anything at this point. RP459 (talk) 22:32, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for all your comments. On one hand 99of9's comment, "I don't think the selection rules should be changed once the selection vote is done" is quite reasonable. Perhaps a small change or adjustment may be possible, but a great change would be confusing; increasing finalist to "10%" would be a great change, so let's give up "10%" finalistas. Maybe next year anyone can make a plan of "getting rid of R2" or setting refiltering vote before R1 and Final.

On the other hand the selection rule in Commons:Picture of the Year/2009 is:

The Round 1 Category winners, and the top 10 overall will advance to Round 2 (the Finals).

I think that this rule contains some ambiguity and allows us to rephrase/interpret "Category winners" as "Category 1st, 2nd 3d" without changing a word (though this ambiguity itself should have been fixed before R1 began). This interpretation will make the number of finalists from 16 to 38 (as there are several 3d images which have the same number of votes).--miya (talk) 17:28, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Uff I only noticed now the big boost in the nr of finalists (these preparation pages are pretty complicated!). I guess is too late but I oppose this. I think keeping to the rules as they were would be better and 16 finalist is perfectly enough. Also note that Mbz's opinion above is not neutral, as the change of rules affects the participation of her images (nothing personal here: I also voted for some of those images). Yet I think the aim should be to have clear winners, and the more disperesed the vote the higher the chance the margin will be narrow (given the 1 vote per user rule). --Elekhh (talk) 05:02, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Votine system : about SecurePoll[edit]

Using mw:SecurePoll extention looked helpful - when Kanonkas suggested in my talk page and I mentioned in Commons:Picture of the Year/2009/Preparation("#Final - using SecurePoll?" and "#mw:SecurePoll in the Final"). But I'm so unfamiliar to this software and there remained several questions. I e-mailed to Tim last week (as well as on this Monday) asking detail about these points:

(1) Can SecurePoll deal with a gallery of many images?
(2) Some voters are not eligible in commons but eligible in some other sister wikis like frwp or etwp. (some of their accounts are not SUL account, either)
Can they vote from their home wiki?
(3) Can we publish who voted for which candidate? Can you configure it to be public?
(4) voter qualification rules is - Any editor who registered before 2010-01-01 and has at least 200 edits prior to 2010-01-16 in any single Wikimedia project

His reply I got today was

(1) - No. No support for displaying images at all
(2) - SecurePoll has a system of guest logins
(3) - No. There is no software for that (it's not a feature he is interested in adding.)
(4) - Not now. They don't currently have software for a "registered before" condition (although it wouldn't be hard to add.)

How do you think these points and whether we can use SecurePoll this year?--miya (talk) 19:20, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as current SecurePoll doesn't support a "registered before" condition (besides it doesn't support displaying images), I admit using SecurePoll for POTY2009 is not practical for POTY2009. Now we are going to check votes mannually in the Final, too.--miya (talk) 13:03, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Votine system : mannual checking[edit]

To check voting mannually it may be convenient to make a checking page like Commons:Picture of the Year/2008/Voting/Voting checking/R2.--miya (talk) 13:03, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

How to list the Final result?[edit]

I don't know where the right spot to ask a question is, so I shall ask my question here. Where will the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners be listed?

That is what I hope to ask, too. Shall we list them in the same way as COM:POTY/2007 or COM:POTY/2008? Or list them at the top followed by the category results?--miya (talk) 05:53, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well yes, but I would suggest to list only top 10 of R2 plus category winners from R1, otherwise is a too long list (given the last minute ad-hoc change to the rules of qualifying to the final round). --Elekhh (talk) 06:57, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You mean "a too long list"? The number of finalists is still smaller than that of last year...which was in fact a little too long.
Now I've made samples with "only top 3 of R2 plus category winners from R1", ""only top 3 of R2 plus category winners from R1" in Commons:Picture of the Year/2009/Results/List/en. Please check here:
I'm not sure which is better as the POTY top list. Feel free to edit this list. Thanks.--miya (talk) 02:29, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How about this version:

If they are OK, shall we conclude POTY.--miya (talk) 12:17, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. I'm still in favour of top10 +R1 cat winners only. --Elekhh (talk) 13:34, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now cleaned up. Please check it again.--miya (talk) 15:34, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cat winners[edit]

Also check the category winners pages.--miya (talk) 19:21, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Announcement[edit]

Please check the wording of announcement in Commons:Picture of the Year/2009/Results/Round 2/en.--miya (talk) 03:44, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free revise them. Isn't there any more serious problem? If not, let's release the result.--miya (talk) 19:21, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've released the result pages. Please report the result to the mailing lists you join. Thanks.--miya (talk) 06:02, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Questionnaire[edit]

One more topic: POTY2009 is going to get featured in the 21 June edition of the Signpost. There is some interview questions for POTY2009 organizers here. Please help filling the sheet (they are a little tough for me as en-2!). Thanks.--miya (talk) 06:02, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
