Photographing the UK's premier listed buildings

Wiki Loves Monuments (http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org) is an annual international photography contest and crowdsourcing event in which participants photograph and upload images of historic monuments to Wikimedia Commons. These images are then available for free use on Wikipedia and beyond. More details about this year's annual competition can be found at Wiki Loves Monuments 2013. The competition takes place throughout the month of September each year.

The UK part of this year's contest will focus specifically on listed buildings. This will be the first time the UK has taken part in the international competition, and everyone is welcome to get involved, whether as a participant (photographer), organizational volunteer, or both. There is no requirement for participants or volunteers to be from the UK. The UK part of the competition is volunteer-led, with significant support from our local WMF chapter, Wikimedia UK.

The main competition website (for competitors) is at http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/

About the contest[edit]

For organizers & helpers

For competitors

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United Kingdom will follow the same rules as the international competition. Participants upload pictures taken by themselves of listed buildings within the UK and upload them to Wikimedia Commons during the month of September under a free licence. Uploaded photographs do not have to be taken during September 2013, but they must not have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons before. Participants are free to take photographs of any eligible building, even if Commons already has one or more photographs, but of course a new angle or a new detail is more useful to the project than simply repeating what has been done before.

For this year's competition we are concentrating on historic buildings of significant importance, as determined by the official national listings maintained by English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw, and NIEA. Eligible buildings are those of grades I and II* (England), category A (Scotland), grades I and II* (Wales) and grades A and B+ (Northern Ireland). Nationally-listed buildings of lesser importance, and buildings on local lists only, will not form part of the competition. For more details, see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom/Eligible buildings.

If you would like to help organize the contest, think you might like to take part in September, or would just like to register your support, please add your name at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom/People.

Remember to subscribe to the Wiki Loves Monuments UK mailing list as well. The list admin is Katie Chan (WMUK).
