As of Feb 1, 2022, Wikimedia Commons Query Service beta 2 is now live and available at https://commons-query.wikimedia.org/. The current URL will also continue to be available until 1 March 2022, after which all traffic will be redirected to the new WCQS beta 2.

The major improvements and changes we've made in WCQS beta 2:

  • Moving WCQS from a single instance to 3 instances in each core services data center for increased stability
  • Flink-based Streaming Updater (which we released recently for Wikidata Query Service) which sends real-time updates to WCQS with newest Structured Data on Commons changes
    • Our SLO is to have update lag <10 minutes over 99% of the time. Dashboard here -- note that there is no data to report yet .
  • Authentication is now required, in order to give the WMF Search team tools to maintain service uptime
    • We acknowledge that authentication moving forward remains an open question and we will continue to work with the community to find a solution that allows us to maintain service reliability while keeping to our values of free and open knowledge. We are designating this release of WCQS as beta 2 to show that this is still a work in progress.

Thanks for everyone's patience and engagement throughout this process, and we're excited for this new release!
