Hi, On some file pages in Commons I noticed contact details so the photographer can be directly informed (without having to do so via a User Talk page) if an identification of an organism is wrong <"Please contact [name and email link] if you think this is a different taxon">. For example, between the Description and Copyright Statement here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alliopsis.silvestris.-.lindsey.jpg This seems a very useful feature. The user apparently created their very own license template, including the mailto link. If you really want your mail address in the open on one of largest web sites in the world, you can add a link like the one in the template. You do not actually need a template for that, you could just add it to the description or above the license: [mailto:address@example.com Your Name]. If you don't mind only logged-in users being able to send you an email, you can add a link like this: Special:EmailUser/SAplants. --rimshottalk16:36, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Recently I'm sent lots of photos from the past for computer-tagging. Seeing these old photos again is nice, but since I have RAW files, I redeveloped a few of them (with the newest DxO software) and noticed a huge quality difference. Now I would like to renew my old photos and replace the old ones with a highest quality exemplar. The problem that will come up are the GPS coordinates, which are not present in the exif file but have been added manually. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description, even if it looks like that in the upload interface. The description you add just appears in the upload log, so something like redeveloped with newer software or so would be enough. --rimshottalk16:41, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Someone use my photo. How do I have it deleted properly?
Someone has edited photos I have taken and uploaded them under my name. These photos were not supposed to be published like this.
Also, the caption is not correct, it was not a photo and press event.

This user and Birthmark On Temple who I suspect to be his sockpuppet, have been constantly uploading misleading photos about his birthmark and some kind of psychology project that he is working on. Some of his photos were marked as possible copyvio by Túrelio. However, he kept reverting the template himself and even replaced it with a Delh template, concluding that the image is kept. Many other photos of are likely to be his own work; however, due to their misleadingness, I don't think they should be allowed on Commons. Please take a look at this account and the contributions (more of a mess) made by him GiaoThongVN (talk) 20:32, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Also, re: "a photo I own". Owning a copy of a photo does not give you the right to license the photo. I take it that someone else took this photo of you. Have they formally signed over the copyright? @Moxy: File:Red leaf with white cross3.svg currently has a white rectangle covering the whole of the page, behind the symbol. If you remove that, it will become transparent. I don't know what tools you've got for editing SVG files, but in Inkscape it's just a case of clicking the background and then pressing Delete. Or you can edit the text of the file and remove the first <path> element. If you can't work out how to do it with the tools at your disposal, I can easily upload a fixed version. --bjh21 (talk) 10:58, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Upload keeps on failing
Hi, I tried to upload a file several times, when it finishes upload, after filling in the image information, in the publish phase, it fails. "Server failed to publish temporary file" is the error message.

Our File:PSCORE's logo.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here.
However, we created our logo. Therefore, it should be okay for us to use it. It is not registered though.

I am helping an individual edit their profile by adding image. I have been unable to do that because the commons is rejecting the image i'm trying to upload.

I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. My case is this: a photo of a person was sent to me for uploading on Wikimedia but was promptly deleted by a Wikimedia moderator. This photo is owned by this person, this person is fine with freely licensing it, and the image is already spread throughout the web as a profile picture. There is technically no creative commons license in the HTML of it on any of the websites that are hosting it. How can I get this photo to upload here for free use? If I get him to add the creative commons license to one of the websites, is that sufficient? How can I prove ownership and grant permission after it has already spread onto many websites?
@ContinuumMechanics: When you say "This photo is owned by this person," I hope you mean the copyright is owned. Owning a physical copy has nothing to do with the matter.
Similarly, "spread throughout the web" has nothing to do with the matter, it does not change the legal status of the photo.
See COM:OTRS for what we will need (basically, an email from the copyright holder granting a license). If that copyright holder is not the photgrapher, they may need to provide evidence that they copyright was transferred. - Jmabel ! talk01:33, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

@De728631: Vielen Dank für Deine Hilfe. Jetzt sehe ich auch die neuen Einträge in der Wikidata Infobox. Das Schiff hat erst am 01.03.2021 seinen Dienst aufgenommen, aktuelle freie Fotos liegen leider noch nicht vor, bei Marinetraffic gibt es aber schon welche. Leider kann ich die hier nicht verwenden. Ich habe erst einmal 2 Bilder des Modells in die Category eingestellt um das Löschen der Catgerory zu verhindern. @OlimpoLaborde: If you specifically need the underlying image to be a particular size (very surprising, but perhaps some template is not intelligent enough to scale it) the only way I know to do that is to download to your machine, scale it in a tool such as Photoshop or GIMP, and then upload at the correct scale. But I'd suggest that you ping some people who seem to have uploaded similar images, and ask directly what they did. - Jmabel ! talk14:04, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

I was going to tag the logo File:Pucko.jpg for deletion, but after much reading on all guidelines on copyright it seems to be okay. It is however not properly marked and tagged, so I would like to know what to do with it. Creator/owner is Wikipedia:Arla Foods and uploader seems to portray it's them, but I doubt. I'm still not sure about anything really, so any advice is welcome.
Okay, so from what I can gather I should use {{PD-textlogo}} and {{Trademarked}}. How does the parameters for Trademarked work? And what´s the point of it?
What should be in the {{Information}} section/template? The logo is obviously not made by the uploader and not created at the uploading date (EXIF data), but I can't for the life of me figure out what to put there instead after reading the template page.
How do I rename or nominate it for renaming? It would be better with "Pucko logo 2018" or whatever year it was made. Is an uncertain year okay to put in the title to at least give it a ballpark to distinguish it from older versions?
Hi Mango, the {{Trademarked}} works without any parameters. It is a non-copyright restriction notifying potential users that the logo is in the public domain but may still have another level of protection, i.e. you probably cannot use it for your own products. In the {{Information}}, please add the website where you found the file you uploaded in the |source= parameter. After all, even if you uploaded the file, it is hardly your "own work". As to the renaming, I have moved the file to a new name: File:Pucko logo.jpg. This a neutral version and any other logos of this brand can then be named after their year of publication if they get uploaded anytime in the future. De728631 (talk) 21:42, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
Privacy of selfie with a notable subject
Often times, I've asked people to upload their selfies with a notable subject, with me then creating a derivative cropped version to be used in the notable person's infobox. However, is it a problem if the original photo is then nominated for deletion on the grounds of privacy towards the person who took the selfie, without deleting the derivative image? This is the case of File:Mohammed Ali Dhani.jpg and File:Mohammed Ali Dhani (cropped).jpg, for example. Nehme1499 (talk) 19:32, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: If this was the intent all along, it probably would have been simpler to upload your crop as an overwrite rather than under a new name. It would have left the matter much cleaner for any admin trying to sort this out in the future. Yes, you can request that the original be deleted, but don't be surprised if at some point in the future someone incorrectly suspects a copyvio. Even at this late date, I'd suggest using the cropped version to overwrite the original, then request a delete for the existing cropped file as a duplicate, and for the uncropped version on a privacy basis. - Jmabel ! talk07:08, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
The page I am trying to edit is a relative of mine. The images that are available to put in the document/page are images that we have physically, as well as them being digitally available online. How am I unable to add a photo of my own relative for their page?
@Hamza Ali Shah: You should typically do nothing. In particular, you should not upload that image to Common. Unless it is something uncopyrightable, like a text logo, or something in the public domain (e.g. a copy of an 18th-century painting) we cannot accept it here without a specific license from the copyright holder. And remember, under the now nearly universal Berne Convention, all photographs, drawings, writings, etc. are automatically copyrighted by their creator at time of creation. - Jmabel ! talk03:03, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Most of the cities (at least) are incorrectly given in this map. (For example: Norton is given as 1950–, but was founded 1894; Winchester is given as 1900–1949, but was founded 1744). The user who created this image is no longer active. This image should either be corrected or deleted. Should this request be made in the form of a deletion request? TE(æ)A,ea. Hallo JohannesSikoka, think your question is for your Commons-account, whenever you login, you see it on top of the page. A Wikipidia accout for your name doesn't exist. And by the way, please sign your posts with ~~~~, which sets a timestamp and your underline. If you need a Wikipedia-account, too, you may create some in the Wikipedia version of your native language. E.g. for English you find it here.
I am a McCormick employee and am trying to update the company logo, number of employees, and the company's financial information in the infobox on the company page. Trying to satisfy requirement for date when using Upload Wizard
I'm having a nightmare trying to complete an upload – whatever I try, it just won't accept that a date for the work's creation has been added. There's no information offered there on what's wrong, no clue as to what apparently hasn't been satisfied (which is hugely frustrating). Or perhaps I'm missing something. @JG66: I never use the Wizard for my uploads and I can't help about its details, but if it has somewhere a button like "ignore all warnings" try it. Otherwise, especially if you upload only one file at a time, my personal advice would be to leave the Wizard and try with another upload form, such as the classic or the basic. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:00, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Can I upload a painting (via the Upload Wizard) painted in the UK in 1884 by an artist who died in 1945 (ie 76 years ago)? The Wizard options seem to require 70 years after death in the USA but I am not sure if this also applies for the UK BFP1 (talk) 15:10, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

The UK copyright status is actually fine, because the rule is 70 years after death. The applicable US rule is actually 95 years after publication, because it was not free in the UK at the COM:URAA cut-off (1945 + 70 = 2015, which is later than 1996). Do you know when it was published? Published means that it appeared in some book, catalogue, newspaper or such. Anything before 1926 would be helpful (for example that auction catalogue). --rimshottalk17:30, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

I'm with you on COM:URAA being difficult to understand, it is! That's because the legal situation itself is difficult and we don't apply URAA-related rules equally to old and new uploads. Old uploads are kept unless explicitly shown to violate URAA, new uploads are deleted unless explicitly shown not to. In the US, yes, see also Commons:Public_art_and_copyrights_in_the_US. For URAA restoration purposes, I would have expected the source country's publication rules to be applicable, not the US's. This is based on the fact that the source country's rules decide whether these copyrights were restored at all. "Pierce & Bushnell Mfg. v. Werckmeister" seems to hold the opposite, which is hopeful for us (it would easier to prove publication). The US copyright duration for works from that period is 95 years from publication, so it would only be free if published before 1926. It's also free if first published in the US during that period without a copyright notice and some other cases (see COM:HIRTLE). @Leautheque: Unfortunately, "permission to use it for this purpose" does not meet Commons' requirements. Per Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses, any copyrighted material on Commons (and this would certainly be copyrighted if the photographer is still alive) must offer a free license that meets certain terms, including allowing derivative works and commercial use (though personality rights and trademarks can still apply). We would need the daughter to select a specific license (I recommend {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, indicate the attribution she wants, and either (1) send that in an email as described at COM:OTRS or, if the photo is already online in a site clearly under her control or can be posted to such a site, just indicate the license there and you can cite that as the source of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk05:52, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I recently came across an image titled Shinwa-zu (神話図), by Kobayashi Eitaku (小林 永濯, 1843–1890), and have been thinking about uploading it here. Okay, so I decided to upload Eitaku's Shinwa-zu at 17:03, and I also copied and pasted the licensing stamp from his artwork of Sugawara no Michizane (exactly as it was there), though it is now [two opening braces]PD-art|PD-Japan|deathyear=1890[two closing braces]. Suffering peine forte et dure, but under books instead of stones
Butter my buns and call me a biscuit, but there seems to be an awful lot of books nowadays! After much figuring I discovered that are (or mostly) in the master category "Books" and excluding this from the search seems to make the dreadful things go away. I think.
But for many years I just searched on the topic I wanted. Now I have to include "-category:Books", which first of all it took me at least .5 man-hours to figure this out (and now multiply by how many people have had my dilemma), and second of all it's a (minor) annoyance to have to remember this from now one.
It'd be great to have "-category:Books" built in as the default. How many people are really looking to access row on row of faded obscure 19th century books (of course the person who is can turn it off, and instructions for this could be prominently provided). Alternatively, a user preference could be made, if Commons has user preference as Wikipedia has (don't see it). Alternatively to that, and much easier to implement, would be prominently displayed advice (including right below the main page search box) to add "-category:Books" if you're looking for pictures (most people are I guess?) and don't want to be sucked into an underworld of books to rival Borge's library.
Hello, I am trying to create a page for the character Peppa Pig, however, I am having a hard time finding an image that doesn't violate the copyright in any way. I provided some information that Peppa Pig is owned by Hasbro. I do not want to get banned again.

Permission from an author to upload a photo that i didnt take
If the image is sourced from a web page clearly under the copyright-holder's control, they can indicate the license there. It helps if you also clarify that in the permission portion of the Information template.
Otherwise, they can pass that permission (a specific license) to Commons as explained in COM:OTRS.
Hi all! I am a bit confused as to which template should be used where when specifying which files a file derives from. I know of Template:Derived from and Template:Own based, but it's not clear to me what the difference is and where the former template should be placed on the file page. And what about Template:Retouched picture? Is it supposed to be added in addition to the other templates? And finally, the docs of Template:Derived from state "Consider also using the following specific derivation templates, for retouching and extracting or cropping", and among these there is Template:Own based which is supposed to be included in source= of the Information template. I want to upload a picture of a heading of a Chinese newspaper article from 1942 (includes the date of issue, name of article, author of article, and name of the section that the article was found in, but NONE of the article itself). Is the heading of an article in a newspaper protected under copyright or is it OK to upload? Bit confused.
Hello. I recently uploaded a png file and realized that svg is the preferred format for flags and such. While looking for ways to convert my file, I discovered that someone uploaded a factually incorrect version of the flag today using the name of my file with .svg at the end. @Abardas: One of the many tools available when you view a page specific to a particular user (like their user or user talk page or their contributions) is the EmailUser tool, which shows as "Email this user". Copyright logo on a multi-language page
Hi everyone,
I have an issue with a logo I would like to put in a Spanish Wikipedia page. The logo is protected by copyright and I have all the information about it (date and registration number, etc..). It is a company logo which is already present on the original Wikipedia page of the company. Could you please help me with the procedure? Can I put a TM tag on the logo? How do I avoid the uploading on Commons, which only accepts free content?

Revoked Creative Commons licenses
Hi all I found that this single photo (belonging to a larger photoset/album) was originally uploaded to Commons in 2016 soon after originally being uploaded to Flickr under a CC BY 2.0 license, but since then has changed to CC BY ND. I would really like to use this other photo from that same photoset/album which was probably also uploaded under that same license, but I fear that the license revocation will stop me from being able to do this? @HeyitsBen: Hi, You can't use that template to try to attribute a license to a work from a location where that license has already ceased to be offered. That template is precisely made to indicate that a free license was used while it was still available. If you missed the window of opportunity to use the free license when it was actually offered at that location, and if you can't find a valid reuse of the work with that license anywhere else, then you missed it. What you can do is search if the work was validly reused with the free license at another location while that license was still available on the original. If so, you can reuse it from that other location where that free license is still available. Or, it depends where and how you want to use the work. If you want to use it outside of Wikimedia and without modification, you can use it from Flickr with the ND license. Or, as suggested above, you can contact the author and ask a new offer of a free license for this particular work. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:27, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Good morning, I was able to upload my picture successfully but after adding the relevant information to my picture, whenever I click on the submission button it doesn't allow me to.
Latitude and longitude are entirely optional. Date, however, is something we should always know, and the location in whatever terms you can specify belongs in description and should affect choice of categories. Are old book engraved frontispieces and illustrations considered works of art (artwork) ?
Engraved fontispieces and illustrations from old books surely have artistic qualities, but since they are massively reproduced images instead of a single work that you find in a museum, I was wondering if I should tag them as artwork or not. I have a 360 sound recording of the march that took place yesterday in London outside new scotland yard, it features, speech, minute silence and chants from crowd. It was public space and obviously impossible to ask 1000 people for permission. It's educational in respect that it passes on knowledge of the experience and accounts for what was heard rather than just a written account of the event.
Hi I have only just clicked to the photos i have of some cousins who are in the public eye a wee bit at the moment, the queens cousins Nerissa and Katherine and then theres the other 3 Rosemary etc.............. After lookin all over the net as i didnt realise what i know, the world doesnt, i see they did a pretty good job of eliminating any photos of them being normal - dear god their story is sad 5 of them in one day committed and the net says they couldnt talk !!!! Möglicherweise habe ich eine falsche Angabe aus Versehen gemacht. Kann mir bitte jemand erklären, warum die Eingestellten Bilder gelöscht werden sollen oder mir Hilfestellung geben. Frühere Löschanträge möchte ich aufrecht erhalten, da es sich um Magazine handelt und ich nicht sicher bin, ob eine Veröffentlichung meinerseits rechtlich möglich ist. First Union logo in Wikimedia Commons
I am an employee of Wells Fargo, and I have verified with our Intellectual Property group that the First Union logo as housed in Commons, [[3]], is a registered trademark of Wells Fargo. First Union and its successor, Wachovia, are both legacy organizations of Wells Fargo. I believe that whoever loaded the image to Commons did so thinking that the logo is in the public domain because First Union Corporation and its business units, including First Union National Bank, no longer exist under that name. @Cag1970: You are confusing trademark and copyright, which are two separate intellectual property rights. Here on Wikimedia Commons we only concern copyright, and in this case the logo in question is too simple to be eligible for copyright protection (see COM:TOO). @Jeff G. and Wcam: As I noted previously, the First Union logo is a registered trademark of Wells Fargo. I do understand the difference between trademark and copyright, and this logo is protected under trademark laws. The Wachovia logo used in the article on that former entity is listed as being used under fair use - Wachovia is also a legacy company of Wells Fargo - so it would make since that the First Union logo also be listed under fair use. The idea here is not to remove the logo, but to ensure that it displays under the correct terms based on feedback from Intellectual Property. If you are Ralph Cato, then you have certainly majorly violated en:WP:Conflict of interest by editing an article about yourself, especially with no disclosure that you are doing so. Also, an encyclopedia article is not supposed to be a resume, a perfect illustration of why it is a conflict of interest to edit an article about yourself.
Copyright on a photo would normally belong to the photographer, not the subject. If I read you correctly, you want to upload a photo of yourself to Commons. Is it a self-portrait? If not, how do you come to own the copyright?

Wikipedia doesn't allow proven claims against Scientology to be made.
The search interface with Wikimedia is really not user-friendly. I've played around with it and am no closer to figuring it out than when I started. If I want to search for items that fall within two categories, how is that done? For example, it I wanted to search for all items that have been placed in both the category "Frogs" and "Statues" to find statues of frogs, what would I type into the search window? (I'm assuming that there is not actually a category for "Frog statues" and am just making that up as an example.)

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm looking to modify an existing photograph as a new separate file (crop to focus on a particular subject for a WP page). Is there any special process for uploading a modified file as a new upload? Or do I just give credit in the new file upload to the original photograph (and if so, is there a certain template to use?) I have asked a photographer on twitter if they relinquish their rights and give a picture for wikimedia commons and he said yes, how do I prove that now here ?
He said he would relinquish a picture for it to be used on a specific page and it would be under Creative Commons CC0 Waiver but that he would need to be credited in said page that it is his picture.
Can that work ? Is it possible ?

I am trying to upload photographs that I took onto my Wikipedia page - Paul Clark Designer. I hope I am allowed to do this.
I have used the Upload Wizard to put them on Wikimedia Commons. I got as far ‘Add Data’ but I’m not sure what to do next. I have tried to go on to ‘Use’ but nothing happens. What should I do?
I have now left that page to ask this question. Do I have to start over?

If you are the owner of the copyright, you may need to verify your identity with Commons:OTRS, to confirm that the account User:PaulBirkett is indeed operated by the designer. If the copyright on an object or on a photo is owned by someone else, you will need to ask that person to send permission, also with OTRS. I wanted to contribute to the talk page on the word flaps being used in the context of UFOs. I have an example from an online publication. I would like to use a screenshot of the publication and a link, but, according to my reading of this site, I can't post those things because they aren't of my own making. My question is, how is using a screenshot and link any different that the notes that cite links at the bottom of any Wikipedia article? Bonjour ! J'aimerais savoir si je puis transmettre à quelqu'un deux ou trois images jpg ou png qui prouvent que l'identification (légende, localisation de la prise de vue) de cette photo est erronée. Il ne s'agit pas du tout du volcan Ilaló en premier plan. La photo n'a pas été prise du nord-ouest de l'Ilaló en direction nord sud (coordonnées géographiques fausses, fournies dans Commons), mais depuis un lieu non identifié avec précision mais probablement à l'est du volcan Cotopaxi en direction sud nord, ce qui, concrètement, signifie que l'on voit le versant sud du Sincholagua et non pas le versant nord. Il faut rappeler que l'Ilaló est à 30 km au nord du Sincholagua. La manière absolument convaincante de le démontrer est de présenter une image comparative entre la photo en question et les versants nord et sud du Sincholagua. La photo montre simplement le Sincholagua en deuxième plan, et l'Ilaló pourrait peut-être se trouver en bas de la pente ouest (gauche) du Sincholagua sous la forme d'un tout petit cône insignifiant qui, en réalité, se situe à une trentaine de kilomètres au-delà. Je fais cette démarche car cette photo est actuellement utilisée dans Wikipédia français pour illustrer l'article Ilaló, comme si la pente sombre du premier plan était le volcan Ilaló, alors que ce ne peut être qu'un bout du flanc Est du Cotopaxi. Is it ok to upload a pic of a living person that is public and is Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-SA 2.0) for a Wikipedia article? The regular pic looks like it was taken professionally. From what you say, then yes and this is a regular occurrence. However "flickrwashing" does also happen, so we'd have to have reasonable faith that the licence was valid. Does it appear to have been granted by someone with the authority to do that? If the Flickr account is the photographer's own account, that would be the typical and simplest case. This image on Commons of the gravestone of Thomas Thetcher, who is notable primarily because of the gravestone itself, shows the gravestone as vandalised. If you look closely, at the very top of the gravestone it says "NO LIMITS WAS HERE!!!".
Is this a problem? I personally see it as both disrespecting Thetcher's memory and harming potential use of the image, but that's just my opinion. Does Commons have any better images of the gravestone? Does anyone know if the vandalism is still there?
The best way for me to resolve this would be to go and take a new picture of the gravestone myself, but it's in Hampshire, UK, which is far too far away, especially given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. JIP (talk) 03:41, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
It is not optimal, but circumstances do not always allow for photographs in optimal conditions. The photo is not per se "disrespectful", it merely documents the state of the monument as it existed at the time the photographer was there. (I have added a graffiti category to the file, as the photo also illustrates that.) Feel free to request a better photo. While I also sometimes make this sort of comment in cases that deserve it, I think it is undeserved in the present case. The uploader is the daughter and heir of the author, as she already wrote elsewhere and as is the logical conclusion from the heirs template she used on the file, as recommended to her by an administrator. In a case like this, the own template is an understandable approximation, it can be interpreted as own work of her father and own copyright, and it can be fixed easily with a more precise wording. Also, there is already the OTRS ticket #2021021310003911 validated by an OTRS member on one of the files. I don't know if the wording of the communication is specific to that file or is a confirmation of identity for the files in general, but I think we should not be too quick on deletion. If the existing OTRS ticket is not already enough for all the files, we can ask another one for completion. It would be fair to cut some slack to this good-faith new user. The user has been asking very reasonably for help before, in order to know what to do, and instead of receiving adequate answers to her relevant requests for help, she's being bombarded with warning tags. The 41 pictures with file names starting by "Laos ile de Khône Province de Champassak" in the Category:Khong Island should be categorized in Don Khon and not Don Khong (different island). Regularly people use these files for Wikipedia, but that's not the right place. I made a few changes by hand but it's time-consuming. Commons does not, never has, and presumably never will accept images on a fair use basis. In the legal sense of "fair use," we allow images that show de minimis copyrighted material. For example, we would not reject a photo of someone because there was a copyrighted logo out of focus in the background, which in the legal sense is "fair use" but in the WMF world would always be called by the more precise term "de minimis"' use. - Jmabel ! talk15:22, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
You describe that as "own work". Does that mean that you designed the logo?
I don't know what you have in mind by "uploaded to wiki or added to my page?" This site is a wiki; your page on it is User:Max Keel, and you can add it there exactly like any other image. If you are asking about a Wikipedia article about what I presume is your business, make sure you've read en:WP:Conflict of Interest before proceeding any further.

What information is available on accessibility on Commons?
Hi all
I'm doing some research to try and build some draft documentation on how Structured Data on Commons might effect accessibility especially for people with disabilities. I'm looking for information that is already available on Commons about accessibility, if there are any developers working on it etc.
I don't think we have much, and certainly no page on the topic. As a media archive, and with that media overwhelmingly being visual, Commons is of course of rather limited use for the blind, in particular. However, most images do have decent descriptions, and there is the emerging "depicts" idea (poorly rolled out, in my view), and especially when that is combined with categories and usually reasonably revealing filenames it should be possible for blind people to make more use of Commons than of most similar sites. Analogously for deaf people & audio.
Other than that, we use mediawiki in a pretty standard configuration, so our other accessibility issues should be pretty much the same ones as are found throughout WMF projects (Wikidata being the one glaring exception). - Jmabel ! talk15:26, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Invalid image metadata
For image, it seems metadata is bad. It has zero width and height. Also, when I try to access metadata using API, I get:

Exclude book scans from search results

I am unclear, due to the use of the word "certain" (as opposed to "all", or "all on this website"...), whether the digital image of the 17th original is available for upload to wikicommons or not. (If it's out of copyright and in the PD, why not link to clearer, more specific re-use page?). Can someone please confirm? Writing as someone who negotiated with the BL for early partnerships, my reading of "out of copyright in nearly all other countries" is in the context of an inclusive statement, i.e. "out of copyright in the UK and nearly all other countries".
The specific page you link to is explaining reservations about video and audio recordings, not reproductions of very old (in our terms, before 1869) works. The reassuring part is at the end where "When onward using these works please try and keep these items in the public domain, and therefore free from any usage restriction, to maximise the number of people that can enjoy these unique expressions of our culture" is clearly a recognition from the BL that the works it is discussing are published as public domain and intended for public domain reuse. --Fæ (talk) 09:54, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Is there a way to ignore book covers and documents?
I used to find and use a lot of Wikimedia Commons images for my presentations. But any more for any search term that I enter, I get pages and pages and pages of book covers or documents that are now in the database. I want to find images of things and places! I don't see a way to restrict out all these book covers and documents. Any idea? I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your official website or social media presence or send permission via OTRS. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. I would like to put images that have been labeled as fair use and have been uploaded to Wiki Commons into a collage and upload it to commons so I could use it in an article. @Leaf8613: Ok, they are not labeled fair use, they are licensed for free use. Some are public domain in the U.S., some are licensed with CC-BY and two are licensed with CC-BY-SA. That means you can make and upload your collage to Commons, but take care to license it with a CC-BY-SA license. On the description page of the collage, make a list of all images used, link to them and, for each, mention its attribution and its original license. You can also look at the page Commons:Collages. Hello. I apologize in advance if this isn't the right place for this, but I don't know where else to go. I've been trying to add an informational page about a regional campus of a university.
My account and my submissions are continuously blocked, and the reasons given do not make sense to me. There are informational pages on the other campuses the university has; however one of our campuses does not have a wiki page and I've been blocked from creating one.
I assumed adding a page with factual, non-promotional verbiage would take no more than an hour, but I've run into so many issues trying to get this page up. I don't know if it takes weeks or months.
This may end up getting this blocked, but I'm attempting to create a page for Ohio University Lancaster. This university already has its own page along with its other regional campuses, excluding Lancaster. These are examples of the other pages. This is another branch campus from Ohio University.

@OHIO Lancaster: Here on Commons your uploads have been blocked by an automated filter since you tried to upload small resolution pictures as a new user. Remember that to upload pictures as "own work", you must have held the camera in your own hands. On English Wikipedia you have been blocked for promotional username. The article you tried to create has been deleted because it was copied from the university website.
The promotional username block is very unlikely to be lifted. You need to create a new username but before you try to create a new article again please familiarize yourself with en:Wikipedia:Copyright violations and COM:L to understand why you can't just copy work by someone else. But the issue is that the Ohio University copyrighted work is being used for an Ohio University Wikipedia page. Just like the Chillicothe, Zanesville, Eastern, and Southern pages. ...Which is exactly the problem here: the image and text belongs to the university, and the university has not granted any free license that would allow them to be copied to Wikipedia. If you are officially authorized by the university to grant such a license then please contact OTRS. If those other campuses use university copyrighted material that may be a grounds to delete them. Hello! I'm a moderately experienced wikipedia editor from Finland and i have a following question:
I own some physical (film) pictures of a couple already passed family members that have a wikipedia page. I would love to add the pictures to their pages, also because i'd hate to see them go to waste, so to speak. But i also don't want to break the rules, so just making sure of something so i know how to do this properly.
1. The pictures have been taken so long ago (early 1900's) that they seem to be in the public domain because of this. They don't have the photographers name on them however, does this matter?
2. Also, if i can upload such pictures, what should i write down as the source? I am planning on photographing them with my own camera.
This is something i want to know before uploading. Thank you in advance!
As I understand these photos have never been published and their author is not known. In such a case they are in public domain in Finland (assuming that 70 years after the creation have passed). Also, i have found a picture or two in a book, about relating subject, that don't say the photographers name and also have been taken over 70 years ago. Thank you for clarifying. Apparently, pictures taken before 1926 are in the public domain in the US. Therefore, i could upload these pictures of mine. One thing is still on my mind, and i couldn't find it out anywhere: if i take an image of the paper-picture and upload it to commons: what should i write as the source? "Private collection"? @Muokkaus55: Not quite. Pictures published before 1926 are in the public domain in the US. Unpublished pictures require 120 years, so currently they would have to be 1900 or earlier.
"Private collection" is OK for source; more specific as to whose collection would be better. Also, do your best on author (e.g. "unidentified relative of FOO").

Photograph when copyright is unknown
Hi, I intend to produce a Wikipedia page concerning my cousin who was a British RAF pilot killed during the Battle of Britain in 1944. I have a photograph of him in his Spitfire which has been used by others previously in a number of on line and printed publications always without copyright acknowledgement, presumably because it is not known. Can I upload this image on to Wikimedia and how should I acknowledge it on the Wikipedia page? If i upload a photograph i own. someone else can sell it and make profit from it without my permission. Is that correct ? OK I get the the sharing, I don't get the free profiteering if this is the case ?
I have a few quick questions about Category:Tongyong Pinyin. First: I believe it is a valid category, but is it? I passed some of the criteria listed here [6] Second: I define this category as encompassing any image that includes a word that is derived from Tongyong Pinyin. Is that a legitimate criteria for determining what gets put in a category? Third: If the category is valid and the rule for including images in valid, then how can I approach this user about this image [7], which the user took out of the category for some reason? I think that you have no idea how to judge which pictures are more suitable for the category "Tongyong Pinyin". If Tongyong Pinyin can be clearly and easily seen in the picture, it may be more suitable for adding than case 1.2.3.--Kai3952 (talk) 03:24, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

For instance, just because the word 'Gueiren' is "so small that it was almost invisible, or even see it at all" in the image [8] does not mean that the image is not an important instance of the use of the Tongyong Pinyin word 'Gueiren'. In fact, that image is literally one of THE seminal images in which the Tongyong Pinyin word 'Gueiren' will ever be used in human history, hence it seems reasonable to include the image in the Tongyong Pinyin category. Do I need to crop every one of these images down so that I'm zoomed in on the Tongyong Pinyin word? I requested community input on the validity of the Tongyong Pinyin category here: [9] and I now request 'summary judgment' about the above argument: I would like an admin to reverse all the edits made by Kai removing images from the Tongyong Pinyin category on the basis that there is a Tongyong Pinyin word in each and every one of the above images. (Even in 'Case 3' above, there is a Tongyong Pinyin word in the image in each case.) If you think reasonable editors/admins could disagree about this issue and hence can't grant immediate relief, I will take this to a different dispute resolution area or what ever other higher process there is- please point the way for me if possible. You said you can see the sign that says 'Gueiren'? Take a look at this: . Not everyone (except you) have superhuman eyes and can see so tiny items. If you are using software to help you see more clearly (i.e., to enlarge the image), then I think you've misunderstood of categories, which doesn't make sense to add Category:Tongyong Pinyin.--Kai3952 (talk) 09:37, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Cannot upload file due to

If one blank page is identical to another blank page of the same size and they are indistinguishable from each other, I suppose they are duplicates for all practical purposes. Some other files probably eluded the duplicate filter because they have some small artifact such as a black line on a side or something. I'm not sure that distinct png files are needed for completeness. I can understand that a djvu file of the full book would keep them all (although, even then, it may not be absolutely necessary). I guess a more basic question may be why have all pages of this particular book, including all blank pages, as distinct png files? In that case, the eventual single file on Commons can just be linked from the Wikisource index as many times as desired, and even redirects would not be useful. But, IMO, there still isn't a convincing reason to use png files in this case. As said at s:Help:Index pages#Using individual image files: "Due to the extra complexity and other drawbacks of this process, this is not recommended for anything other than very short works: such as single pages or works of just 2-3 pages in length." -- Asclepias (talk) 19:16, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel, Jeff G., and Asclepias: The Internet Archive tool tend to fail quite often. Also, adding files to the IA adds a significant amount of time to creating an Index Page. Although, I would prefer if Commons allowed the uploading of books as a zip of scan, the Wiki foundation has made that clear that this will never happen. Therefore, scans must be uploaded either as a PDF or DJVU that has significantly lower quality or individual image files. Even if a page appears blank, it is still a part of the book. Therefore, it should be allowed here. Right now, there's a palm leaf project that is also struggling with creating Index ns from individual images. less need for uploading: not sure how making a new redirect is significantly less work than an upload; probably more work if someone already has the pages of a book on their computer as a coherently numbered sequence of files.
less need for error message fallout: not sure I follow. It seems tautological that if someone sticks to whatever policy we have, there won't be error messages; if the don't, then there will. So I don't see how that favors one policy over an other.
less need for storage: storage is pretty abundant. In general, we tell people not to worry about file size when uploading. Also, if the file is already uploaded, then changing it to a redirect does not save any storage.

Ich betreibe ein nichtkommerzielles und privates Webportal mit dem Titel: "Repertorium digitaler Quellen zur österreichischen und deutschen Rechtsgeschichte in der Frühen Neuzeit" [11]. In diesem Portal habe ich Image- und Volltextdigitalisate zu dem oben benannten Thema gesammelt und der (wissenschaftlichen) Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung gestellt.
Im Interesse der Nachhaltigkeit meines Projekts muss ich einen öffentlich zugänglichen Speicherort für manche Dateien finden, damit nicht nach meinem Tod ein Großteil der Daten aus dem Netz gelöscht wird (abgesehen von der Datensicherung bei der DNB und bei archive.org).
Es geht im Wesentlichen um folgendes Problem: In meinem Projekt muss ich immer wieder auf dieselben Rechtsquellen (Corpus Juris Civilis / Allgemeines Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch von 1811 / Landtafel ob der Enns 1608) verweisen und einzelne Stellen aus ihnen zitieren. In der Regel erfolgt dies über einen Link auf ein Digitalisat, das von einer Bibliothek digitalisiert wurde. Bibliotheken digitalisieren in der Regel so, dass jeder Scan fortlaufend numeriert wird: Die Vorderseite des Einbands = Scan1, der Titel vielleicht Scan=5, das Vorwort Scan=11, die Seite 1 Scan=23 usw.
Wenn ich seitengenau adressieren möchte, ohne jedesmal nachschauen zu müssen, wie der konkrete Dateiname lautet, dann muss ich die Scans umbenennen, so dass die Druckseite 1 beispielsweise die Adresse hat „s001.jpg“. Diese so erstellten Images habe ich in einem Verzeichnis je Buch gespeichert (Erstellung einer Webseite über xnview). Dieses Verzeichnis enthält zwei Unterverzeichnisse: „originals“ und „thumbs“.
Meine Frage besteht darin, ob es denkbar ist, solche Digitalisatverzeichnisse, die aus öffentlich zugänglichen und frei verfügbaren Bibliotheksdigitalisaten generiert und bearbeitet wurden, in WikiCommons dauerhaft zu speichern und wie dies technisch aussehen könnte. Das Verzeichnis zum Institutionenteil des Corpus Iuris umfasst beispielsweise etwa 700 Dateien (davon etwa die Hälfte JPEG's)

Book digitized
I run a non-commercial and private web portal with the title: "Repertorium of digital sources on Austrian and German legal history in the early modern period" [12]. In this portal, I have collected image and full-text digital copies on the above-mentioned topic and made them available to the (scientific) public.
In the interest of the sustainability of my project, I have to find a publicly accessible storage location for some files so that a large part of the data is not deleted from the network after my death (apart from the data backup at DNB and archive.org).
The main problem is: In my project I have to refer to the same legal sources again and again (Corpus Juris Civilis / .html General Civil Code of 1811 / Landtafel ob der Enns 1608) and cite individual passages from them. This is usually done via a link to a digitized material that has been digitized by a library. Libraries usually digitize in such a way that each scan is numbered consecutively: The front of the cover = Scan1, the title perhaps Scan = 5, the foreword Scan = 11, the side 1 Scan = 23, etc.
If I want to address exactly to the page without having to look up the specific file name each time, then I have to rename the scans so that print page 1 has the address "s001.jpg", for example. I saved the images created in this way in a directory for each book (creation of a website via xnview). This directory contains two subdirectories: "originals" and "thumbs".
My question is whether it is conceivable to permanently store such digitized directories, which have been generated and edited from publicly accessible and freely available library digitized data, in WikiCommons and what this might look like technically. The directory for the institutional part of the Corpus Iuris contains about 700 files (about half of which are JPEGs)

If the question is really about deep linking to a text only page rather than a scan, then you have to try WikiSource rather than Commons. WikiSource can take book scans on Commons and turn these in to navigable texts, and it exists in various languages, including Latin and German. It is possible that a project to mirror your existing public domain transcriptions would be welcome.
Why is it so difficult to find the attribution to use if you want to correctly give credit to the producer of the image

Im Artikel über den Universitätsprofessor Georg Faber ist eine Foto seines Grabsteins abgebildet. Ich bin sein Enkel und würde dieses Foto gerne durch ein Foto von ihm selbst ersetzen. Das Originalfoto stammt aus seinem Nachlaß und ist in meinem Besitz. Das Foto ist mehr als 55 Jahre alt. Ich weiß nicht, wer dieses Foto gemacht hat oder wann es aufgenommen wurde. Das Foto soll freigegeben werden. Beim Versuch das Foto hochzuladen bekam ich eine Meldung bezüglich einer möglichen Urheberrechtsverletzung. Ich weiß nicht wie ich weiter vorgehen muß. Vielleicht kann mir jemand dabei helfen.

Wenn Sie nicht wissen, wer es fotografiert hat, können wir nicht wissen, wer der Erbe der Rechte an geistigem Eigentum ist. File extension problem
I want to upload a newer version of a .jpg file. However, although it's another photograph of the same thing, the file type is PNG, and the software won't accept it.
Is there an easy way to fix this, that doesn't involve me installing software? I can move the PNG file to my Dropbox account, and there I can easily rename it. But back in Wikimedia, I can't figure out how to upload a file from Dropbox. Thanks. Deisenbe (talk) 13:30, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
@Deisenbe: You cannot overwrite a JPG with PNG here. Period.
Why do you want to overwrite it? Per COM:OVERWRITE that is very rarely the right thing to do.

Help in Uploading MP3s connected to Renaissance Poetry
I am trying to upload seven short MP3s in connection a Renaissance poetry initiative. The goal of the initiative is to create an annotated critical edition of Renaissance poetry that will be free and publicly-available. Each clip is about 30 to 60 seconds in length. (One clip is about 90 seconds long.)
I am personally editing a section of this Renaissance poetry edition that focuses on the connection between Renaissance poetry and the music of that time. The goal is to include within the online edition hyperlinks to these seven MP3s which represent audio examples for references in the text.
All seven MP3 files were created by me using the software program MuseScore. MuseScore is open-source software released under the GNU General Public License.The MP3 uses the default MuseScore sound fonts and the posting of these MP3s is permitted under the MuseScore license. @Givian: In general, in India, all of these things should be fine, provided that they are in a place generally accessible to the public and that you are not taking a photo of a copyrighted text. For example, a "wall text" in a museum would probably not be OK. The nature of the building should have not have any bearing. I don't really know how copyright works, but I don't think this image needs a license because I've seen multiple sources use this image. Could someone help?
I'm getting an error when uploading a new version of an image: File extension ".gif" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/jpeg). I've noted that the .gif format does not in any way help the image I am trying to replace (it's a static image). How do I override this so I can upload a new version of the image, with higher resolution? the image is File:Kalapuya man.gif Thanks!
@Tyrone Madera: You can't override it: Commons insists that the file name and format must match. You should upload your new file under a name that ends ".jpg" or ".jpeg" and then update the few uses of the file to refer to the new one. I took the above subjected picture from an old official potrait, which I have as a souvenir (includes his signature at the bottom right). The picture is in the public domain as it was commissioned in the late 80s as his official military photograph and is used in several publications including a book titled "Potrait of a New Nigeria: Selected Speeches of IBB" released in 1989 (ASIN : B0006EW7TW).
As an owner of a rare hard copy of the potrait, I ask your kind assistance to help me through how to reference the picture in order to avoid it being removed from Wikimedia Commons.

TeX (also LaTeX) is a system for typesetting mathematical formulae (and other things). It's obscure, but well-known and widely used within its niche. Wikipedias have a general policy that formulae should be expressed through it, rather than as images (there are recognised and uncontroversial advantages).
Despite that, Commons has collected an appreciable number of formulae as images, often from INUSE on the Wikipedias. Some of these are complex, some simple; some are of extremely widespread potential use, others are very narrow in application. It's advantageous to make the content of these images also available through TeX, although that requires effort by people skilled in its use - which isn't common (it's very easy to use some TeX on Wikipedia once it's written and available). There are categories to manage this: Images which should use TeX and Images with a TeX equivalent.
What's not clear is how we're supposed to manage this. I can find no TeX project or similar on Commons. Can anyone point me to one? @Matthias M.: ? @Barejsha02:
I've just spent some time converting some of these images to TeX, just to have that work nominated immediately for deletion. Is that how we're supposed to work? Because it's a poor reward for doing that (it's not a trivial effort) to have it all deleted immediately. See File:FFT 3.png and User talk:Maywuwang for a list. Also, recently, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sqrt-on-macosx.png. @WIKImaniac:
We have a similar issue with JPG / PNG / SVG images. There are often JPG images which would be better in a vector format such as SVG. However there we have a long precedent that we encourage the conversion, but we don't delete the superseded image. @Jeff G.: thanks for your link to this discussion. Formulas are often uploaded as images if the user cannot write them as a TeX formula himself. Often, screenshots of third-party websites are taken or a sheet of paper on which the formula has been written is photographed. I don't see any good reason to keep such images (often in bad quality) after they have been replaced by a TeX formula, especially since a better quality screenshot of the TeX formula can be created at any time if a pixel graphic is really required.
To be honest, most of the deletions were executed without a single user leaving a comment in the discussion. Apparently almost nobody is interested in math formulas in this project, as they can be replaced by TeX and do not serve the purpose of this project. Several hundred deletions of images that have been replaced by TeX formulas have already been executed in the last few months. The executing administrators apparently share my opinion that such images can be deleted. If you are interested in the opinion of these administrators, please contact them.
We have a workflow here that is requesting TeX authors to recreate images as TeX. This is useful.
The next thing that happens is that both the image and the TeX replacement are slated for deletion. Both of them. This is not useful. What is the point in doing the conversion if it's only going to be deleted immediately? Andy Dingley (talk) 17:11, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley: thank you for your addition. I now understand your question. An image cannot be deleted as long as it is in use. Therefore, the image must first be replaced by the TeX equivalent in all pages. Then the image can be deleted. If you want your TeX formula to remain in Commons, you can attach it to your request for deletion. This is how I did the several hundred conversions that I made in well over 100 hours of work over the past few months. As for the benefits of conversion, you need to think beyond the scope of this project. The improved formula is now available on all edited pages.
Now what about the deletion of the image here in Commons? Let me give you two examples.
During the last months I found various screenshots of math formulas taken from the English wikipedia used in the Russian wikipedia. These were obviously created by users who cannot write TeX formulas themselves and did not know how to copy the TeX formulas from the English wikipedia. Why should such screenshots be stored here after conversion?
What about images that contain only plain text? What use do they create if they are not deleted?
Thankyou for explaining the purpose of Commons to me. However Commons is not here merely as an image server for existing Wikipedia articles: there are also resources here available to any project, even those outside WMF projects. That includes TeX representations of formulae (many of these formulae are well-known and frequently used).
To put effort into converting images into TeX, then promptly deleting both from Commons, is a ridiculous waste of the effort that goes into doing that conversion. The goal is not simply "to purge images from Wikipedias". That isn't even happening: many of these images are already not INUSE elsewhere, but they're still requested for conversion. The process here fails first of all because it doesn't track any sort of WASINUSE, where an image might already have been replaced.
If the goal here is to delete images, then just delete those images immediately (if not INUSE). Don't waste people's time in asking for TeX conversions first.
If it's worth making the effort to convert them, then don't insult people (yes, I take your immediate DRs here as a direct insult to my work a couple of days ago) by deleting their conversions.
The idea that Commons "as a repository of TeX exemplars" is best served by somehow searching through an undescribed and unfindable list of deletion requests is the most ridiculous part of the whole of this.
Hi Andy, i understand your disappointment, but (sorry) I'm for the deletions. Lots of {{Use TeX|1=}} tags are done by me. (To me) they are "problem Tags" and precursor to deletion. I put them, to let the uploader know this is not the way to do it, without immediately throwing a wrench in their work by deleting it. So they can build up their sandbox project … replace it with TeX … then the image gets deleted. The way to avoid deletion is the Keep=reason parameter. Maintenance has been massively lagging behind so WIKImaniac “processed” lots of files in the last months. Putting in the conversion-work in a abandoned file and having the file deleted is not desirable. Keeping all the files is quite useless. There is an infinite number of formulas and different languages/aricles may choose different symbols for the same parameters. There can't be usefull collection of "Images of Formuls". My PROPOSAL: we improve {{Use TeX|1=}} to only encourage the writing of a TeX replacement if the file is in use AND to make more clear that it will be deleted if it is not in use. The Category:Images with a TeX equivalent states "Images that are globally replaced by TeX code are subject to speedy deletion" but the template does not communicate that currently. Additionally we failed in maintaining the Categories, so that the impression arose the files would stay long term. I am sorry for that. So is any part of Commons' role "to act as a repository of TeX exemplars"? I see this as compatible with COM:SCOPE, both for representations of widely used formulae, also as a guide to TeX techniques (TeX is obscure and seen as impenetrable, which is undeserved). We've just had a year of widespread home-schooling (which WMF largely missed a trick over) and there is value to having such resources available.
In which case, how is Commons going to store and organise these so that they're findable?
Otherwise, just ban images of formulae as uploads and delete any we do have, without wasting further effort. If anyone wants them on a wikipedia, that's a local problem.
What seems pointless from either angle is to do what you and I have been doing and that's to TeX-convert images here. 1.) I have nothing against many TeX formula examples. I actually like to work based on good examples. (And there are lots of files i wrote "creative" TeX replacements and spent considerable time on [13][14], knowing they will be gone stings.) But why would we need images for that? We could make a Table with TeX-Code and TeX-Result next to each other. Basically an extension of Help:Displaying a formula. Especially for complex, creative, non obvious "TeX constructions" this would be great. Full support from me.
2.) The way I see it "images of formula as uploads" are already banned per SCOPE "may not be hosted here: Files which are representative merely of raw text". The process is: Letting the author/user know the is a problem with {Use TeX} -> Replace them with Tex -> delete them. To me it seems to be a fine process. (We are just lagging behing and WIKImaniac is trying to catch up.) The two streamline options I see are: not writing replacements if images never get used (and i think we must give the up-loader some time to write the page they want to use the formula in.) And instead of a deletion request we could apply speedy-deletion. In the past admins just purged the all the replaced files without any discussion. (At least for the more obvious cases). There are files were the TeX does not quite match the original File:Stiffmatrix.gif. I can see an argument against deleting and using the Keep=TeX does not quite match image. As a co-developper auf the Template:Use TeX and the creator of the Category:Images with a TeX equivalent to keep, WIKImaniac and Jahobr are obviously right. The idea of the parameter with the TeX code has always been to serve as a copy&paste source to assist the replacement of the formula images in Wikipedia articles by TeX code.

2. I like the idea of collecting interesting TeX examples. When writing complex formulas I often look for similar stuff to use as a start point. I started User:Jahobr/TeX_Examples. Nevertheless, there will be such cases in future, too, and I feel a need to know, if there is a solution in Commons, or not. One solution instead of a hard redirection seems to be a gallery, named like the taxon name of an existing WP-article. These gallery should not moved to the category name as long as the WP-article uses this taxon name. And than there may be another gallery in the same category, too. I'm not sure I understand what you want to do. The File:Colonel_Bogey.ogg is instrumental. What do you mean by "has its own lyrics"? The Category:Colonel Bogey March has other versions also, which are not duplicates. If someone records and uploads a song version, it will not be a duplicate. If you are thinking of adding closed captions with particular lyrics to an instrumental file, I think that's not a good idea. Closed captioning is for transcription of the words actually present in an audio or video file and their translation in other languages. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:31, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
From looking at the Wikipedia article in question, it appears that the instrumental was uploaded to here because it is not covered by copyright, whereas you desire to upload something which may possibly be covered by copyright. The article states "There is no known attempt by anyone to claim or enforce a copyright on the lyrics". Given the nature of copyright law, that's not necessarily a guarantee the song is in the public domain. Material with questionable copyright status can and will be challenged if uploaded. @Zquid: The license requires keeping the copyright notice but not necessarily in the same place. Reusers, if they wish, may modify the image, as long as they mention the copyright notice in a reasonable manner somewhere with their reuse. This photo was copied from flickr. Commons recommends to not place copyright notices directly in the images, but does not forbid it.
