Copyright help regarding File:Medieval market ms.jpg

The whole image page says it needs more information. I don't know if this will help, but there is another Wikimedia Commons picture that is a close up of this one.

The whole image says what document it is from. The partial image appears to give the date (15th Century).

Why would the preview of an uploaded photo not show up, even though it's there?

I have recently uploaded a bunch of photos of locations in NZ - all are fine except one, which does not show up when you look at File:Waiau_Kauri_grove.jpg. If you click on one of the links (full res or one of the thumbnails), it works, so I know it's there, but on the main page, there's no image at all. I have tried purging (tab and manually), but no difference. Other photos I have uploaded exactly the same way are fine. Please let me know what the issue is, so I can avoid it in the future, thanks!

  • I think this and the above has the correct permissions, but Famberhorst doesn't see how to mark things correctly, and certainly did this in a way that did not preserve history. Expert opinion needed on Inkscape drawing

I am trying to convert different bitmap images to SVG images, which are listed under "SVG version needed" category. Today I convert this one form here. Is it ok? How can I improve it more? Any suggestion please? --Freemesm (talk)12:58, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Quality of the image is not very good. The text is blurry and some portion is almost non-readable. So I omit that. What about the quality of the SVG image? Any suggestion?-Freemesm (talk) 17:12, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Changing the page photo

hi there,

i have a better quality photo of Sergio Vega (bassist) which I would like to add to his page. There is already a photo posted there and I am not sure how to go about making a revision. If you have a photo that is published under a free license (or one you've created yourself that you're willing to release under a free license) that allows anyone to use it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, go ahead and upload it under a new name. You should not overwrite the existing file with completely different photo. If you have any specific problems with the upload process, please come back and ask them here. After you've uploaded the file, you can edit the page that you would like to insert it into. —LX (talk, contribs) 18:41, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Not anything creative to be copyrighted

I don't know where in commons to ask this, so I'll ask here. Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop thought that Heart and Soul 1961 Cleftones single is in the public domain as not anything creative to be copyrighted.[1] Do you think the same? The design of the record is indeed too simple to get copyright. Nevertheless in some cases the photographer could gain copyright. Did you take this image by yourself? --McZusatz (talk) 22:56, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

McZusatz, according to Commons policy, if a slavish copy(photo) of a public domain image(say an old painting) is still public domain, then a slavish copy(photo) of a public domain image (say a record label that is ineligible for copyright) is still public domain, right? So as far as its status as public domain, it doesn't matter who took the photo/scan, right? – JBarta (talk) 00:06, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I would say this one is pretty safe. If you really wanted to cover your bases, since the only imaginably creative element is the inclusion of part but not all of the record surface, you could use GIMP or Photoshop take that to pure black or pure white, so as to simply show the copyright-ineligible label and a pure color to square it off, but I would think that in this case that is overkill. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm confused

In a template for a map of norway writes some sur user (NordNordWest) that if you do not credit him and graciously begging him for a license per. mail so he takes a lawyer to harass a while wrote a user in another answer to help drive that you can not disclaim copyright by putting images on the commons but only gives them permission to use them. but in learn-image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard says that allowing others to use your work without having to be informed or credited for it. how does that work?   • I don't love what he writes -- "In case of refusal of the above terms the author reserves the right to take legal action" -- but it's within our rules. You conform to the license, then no problem. You violate the license, he reserves the right to sue. I haven't ever sued anyone over taking my images from Commons withoug (for example) correctly attributing them, but I would also consider myself to reserve that right. I came pretty close when a Hearst newspaper used a photo of mine prominently on their web site without crediting me. - Jmabel ! talk 23:07, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
    • Question is, where "violate the license" starts. IMHO the conditions NNW lists in this template are not covered by CC BY-SA-3.0. The license text requires either the copy of the license text or a link to the url of the license text. It also requires, if feasable, a link to the url specified by the author and that refers to the copyright statement or licensing information for the work. I agree with Jmabel's explanation. However, in the user's licensing statement, the positioning of his P.S. line is badly chosen and that may cause confusion. His P.S. line reads "PS: In case of refusal of the above terms the author reserves the right to take legal action." It refers to "the above terms" and it is positioned immediately below the optional requests. Instead, it should be better positioned, immediately below the statement of the legal obligations, and above the optional requests. I think you misinterpreted the UploadWizard information page. It says that the licensed work can be used without notifying the author. It does not say that the licensed work can be used without crediting the author. In general, the author must be credited. USS Change Navy minesweeper photo

My dad was on the USS Change Navy minesweeper. He has an old photo from his collection taken on board ship showing the entire crew in 1945. First, you need to scan the photo into one of acceptable graphic formats (TIFF is the best). Then, if your father is not alive now, you as his heir can upload the photo directly to this project releasing it under an appropriate free license, {{Cc-by-3.0}} being preferable. If your father is still alive you can also upload the photo yourself but you will need to secure permission from your father to do this. (I assumed that your father was the photographer, but if not, you will need to know who the photographer was.) Ruslik (talk) 09:25, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

What do you mean by "need a license"? Do you mean that you want to known the license under which the image is distributed? Or you want a specific license from the copyright holder? Ruslik (talk) 16:37, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
When you upload a file to Wikimedia Commons, you must provide a verifiable source. The only source information you provided was "Flickr". As Flickr contains literally billions of files, that's not really verifiable. Since you didn't provide the source address, FlickreviewR was unable to review the file. The only clue as to where you got the file from was that you stated that the author was "Roller Coaster Philosophy". Searching for this on Google, I was able to find that this is the nickname of a Flickr user named Jeremy Thompson. Now, searching his Flickr photostream for the phrase "Tatsu", I was able to find http://www.flickr.com/photos/rollercoasterphilosophy/5359317354/, which is what you should have given as the source. Others should not have to do this type of detective work to figure it out for you.
When you upload a file to Wikimedia Commons, you must also explain which free license it's published under or why it's in the public domain. On the source page which I found, we can see in the "License" section that it's published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license. That means that you're free to use and redistribute it, provided that you credit the author and state the license that it's published under. Redistributing it without doing those things constitutes copyright infringement and is illegal. Even though you didn't specify a license, you also claimed that you had forwarded the details of the licensing permission to our permission archive. That's obviously not true. Please don't misuse the {{OTRS pending}} tag again.
You also uploaded a scaled-down, very low-resolution version of the photo (768×1,024) rather than the full resolution version (2736×3648). All of these problems would have been avoided if you had used one of our automated tools for uploading files from Flickr, so please do that in the future.
I also placed the file in the more specific Category:Tatsu, rather than Category:Flying roller coasters and Category:Roller coasters at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Always use the most specific categories applicable. —LX (talk, contribs) 16:54, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Eureka Tower 01.jpg

Hi, "Eureka Tower 01.jpg" was updated by a new version on 28/01/13. Today is 03/02/13, but the uploaded new image still looks distorted (at least from my PC screen). Does that mean the system of Wikimedia Commons take many days to update or because this problem only appears on my screen of the computer? Donaldytong (talk) 01:29, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

As for the visual, you should probably just clear your cache but this appears to be an entirely different photo, and should be uploaded under a new name even if they are both by you. The EXIF information does not match the date you indicate in the information template. If I were you, I would revert that photo and upload the new one under a different name. - Jmabel ! talk 05:34, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Jmabel for your advice. May I have your further help? I have many updated images to overwrite the old images because these newly uploaded images are updated to better quality images, e.g. recognized as Quality images by Wikimedia Commons. They were all worked perfectly. One recent example is "Port Melbourne Beacon Cove.jpg" . "Port Melbourne Beacon Cove" is the same image made by myself, but it is taken by different cameras on different date and used different file name, but overwrote the old image successfully. If I upload a new image separately, what about these links used by these related articles in the Wikipedia and websites of Wikimedia Commons? Should it be re-linked to different articles in Wikipedia or Wikimedia commons manually by myself (some images are linked with more than 20 related articles on Wikipedia and websites of Wikimedia Commons.)? Also what does the function of Upload a new version of this file mean in the system of Wikimedia Commons? Furthermore, I found this distorted image only appears in the first click of the image enlarge. If you have a second click of this image enlarge, it works well. At User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands, you can request that any particular file be globally replaced on WMF projects with any other file. This should, of course, be used only for uncontroversial substitutions. It will usually get done within a few days.
The distorted image is a caching issue. It can happenn at several different points between the repository and your machine, but it usually clears itself pretty quickly.
Upload a new version of this file is intended mainly for technical fixes (e.g. improved color balance, minor crops to remove borders, etc.). Some of us also use it in the following manner: if we have an image that we have done Photoshop/GIMP work on, and have not yet uploaded to Commons, we first uplaod the image just as it came out of the camera and then upload the preferred version. This documents what came out of the camera vs. what was postprocessing; it also allows someone at a later date who wants to try different postprocessing to get back to the original as a basis.
By the way, when you want to refer to a file in a comment, use [[:File:Eureka Tower 01.jpg]], not [[File:Eureka Tower 01.jpg|50px]]. These show up, respectively, as File:Eureka Tower 01.jpg and .

Are these edits vandalism?

I notice that an unregistered user has made a few edits that wrap <noinclude> </noinclude> around category tags on deletion debates. I can't quite think why that would be done?

The effect of the noinclude tag is that the pages (for example, "Commons:Deletion requests/Archive/2012/01/23") into which the deletion request page (for example, "Commons:Deletion requests/File:1027 RockDetente.png") is transcluded, will not be categorized in the category. Only the deletion request page itself should be categorized in the category, not all the other pages into which it may be transcluded. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:54, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok. Seems like a shortcoming in the wiki software. If the categories should be wraped with <noinclude> </noinclude> shouldn't it be able to do it automatically for transcluded pages? Or failing that shouldn't a bot be doing it? Thanks Sun Ladder (talk) 16:11, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I have created a wiki page. I have uploaded images to the commons to use on my page. For some reason when I try to upload a photo it tells me it's a duplicate, and won't add it to my page. I figured if I deleted all of my uploads and started again, I could do it the right way (assuming I was doing it the wrong way) but I can't even figure out how to delete my uploads. Photos removed from my uploads

I have been trying to upload photos for days and it won't work. Either it's something with licensing or description or it tells me it's a duplicate. I would like to delete my photos from my uploads and try again. Can someone please help me. Hiding Facebook (etc.) links?

Not necessarily. It only works for wikis which have the "template_share" class assigned to their share template. I don't know where the Commons share template is derived from or which wikis derive from our template, so you will need to try it out for every wiki, I'm afraid. Hallo, ich habe einige Bilder hochgeladen, von denen ich nicht weiß, wie ich sie lizensieren soll. Die Fotos sind mir von Privatbesitz zur Verfügung gestellt worden.

  1. Der Fotograf einiger Fotos ist 1940 verstorben. Was kann ich machen, damit sie nicht wieder gelöscht werden?
  2. Die übrigen Fotos sind Eigentum des Privatbesitzes. Ich habe ausdrücklich die Erlaubnis, sie zu verwenden und bei Wikipedia hochzuladen. Muss ich sie trotzdem irgendwo lizensieren lassen?

I have uploaded the above mentioned file. The previous one (which was the same picture) has been removed by http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:%C3%89rico_J%C3%BAnior_Wouters because of to late receiving the authors permission by e-mail. In the meantime the author has send his permission for free use tot permissions-commons@wikipedia.org please inform me, if the problem now has been resolved or not.

What is the original image for the maps on Wikipedia?

Adding government files

When you add a file there is a set of choices about sources. Some refers to USA government, but the same should apply also to government of other countries. For example, an image of a standard specified by an European government is public by default. So you should add the possibility to specify WHICH COUNTRY. --Dejudicibus (talk) 22:14, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

No, most governments, including most European governments, do not have the kind of broad exemption from copyright protection that the US federal government has for its works. Most European governments only make exemptions for statutes and similar textual decrees. Most also guarantee access to public records, but those records are typically still protected by copyright (i.e. not in the public domain). As far as I know, the United States is the only country whose copyright law explicitly exempts all works by employees of the national government from copyright protection. Indonesia apparently places government works into the public domain by default, but still makes it possible for the government to reserve copyright at its own discretion simply by using a copyright notice (see {{PD-IDGov}}). Lymantria (talk · contribs) tagged the image as having no licence, likely because the template {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} was used on the page. That template is normally only used if a file doesn't have a licence, and I guess that the user missed the licence at the bottom. It seems that {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} was there because the first revision of the file information page doesn't have a licence. English: The book cover does not present any creative work. It shows simply, standard font, simply arranged, without any effort to be creative. The file File:Layla and Majnun2.jpg, which is a featured picture on Commons and three Wikipedias, somehow has a bright cyan overtone. Holy cards

There are about 80 holy cards uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. We have several hundred which we would like to do something with, perhaps upload to Wikimedia Commons? But I'm wondering about the rights to the images: The name of the creator and date of creation are seldom written on a holy card, although sometimes the picture on the card is a well-known one for which creator's name and the date could be found. I could imagine that those who create holy cards often have re-used the art of others without asking for permission. They seem to be in Category:Holy card. I think it would depend on the country of origin and 'sweat of the brow'. If a card is made from a public domain image in the country of origin and the US where are servers are then they should be allowed. If the modifications are unique enough to qualify as copyright in the country that the modifications are made they wouldn't be allowed. See: Commons:Threshold of originality. I am looking for information on Marion (Marian) Crenshaw. Per City Directory 1945 for Memphis, TN he was employed as a fireman. His wifes name was Opal. I have not been able to locate him anywhere. Looking for time and place of death. He was my uncle by marriage to Opal Harbin. I would appreciate any information you might have.

The image I'm looking for

I need help looking for a certain image. It is a picture of two cartoon characters. One had light blue hair and I will describe the other one later. The blue-haired one had brown clothing. He also looked like a boy.Also, he looked frightened and his teeth were showing. The other cartoon character looked like a girl. Her head was resting on the boy's shoulder. She looked half-lion. Her mouth was white and she had fur. Also, her hair was long and it was a brownish color. Also, the picture was only showing their heads, not their entire bodies. I think the girl was smiling a little, and her teeth wasn't showing.Also, the entire background was light blue. This picture was on Wikipedia. It was on a "List of Characters" page. Can somebody please help me find this image? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to put topics like this on this help desk. File:Gray580.svg help

I did the download of the image .png from Commons, to put arrows and title for the vein which interests me. I can't upload a new version because this one is .svg and not .png. What can I do? For me Commons is yet very confusing. Sorry. I have uploaded a new version .png but when I use file it appears on my article without arrows and I don't know how to do it properly. Firstly, I've reverted your changes to File:Gray580.png. As you can see from File:Gray580.png#File usage on other wikis, the image is being used to illustrate a large number of articles on various topics, where having the text "ASV" and the arrows would just be confusing to the reader. If you want to make such significant modifications to existing files, you should upload the result under a different name. See Commons:Overwriting existing files.
Secondly, PNG is a raster format (consisting of a grid of pixels), while SVG is a format for scalable vector graphics (consisting of points and curves between them). It is possible to embed a PNG in an SVG, as you have done with File:Gray580.svg, but the result is not scalable. If you're modifying a PNG file, it is usually best to save the result as PNG as well.
So, my recommendation would be to upload the version of the file that you originally uploaded on top of File:Gray580.png, but with a different and more descriptive file name, such as File:Location of accessory saphenous vein indicated on plate 580 from Gray's Anatomy.png. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:20, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

File:Gray580.png is in the public domain. Your changes (adding two arrows and three letters) are not original enough to warrant copyright protection, so the result is still in the public domain. I have uploaded a.. photo of a graffiti which is a joke about a Star Wars character. What license should I give it?! Can it be e.g. Own work, copyleft, attrib req (Multi-license GFDL, CC_BY-SA all ver)? I'm a beginner in the licensing matter and this case is definitely over my knowledge! How can I add the license tags, anyway? Can't spot any option once the file is uploaded.

It's not a straightforward matter, and you've done the right thing by asking. According to Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Graffiti, current practice on Commons is to ignore the copyright of artists of illegal graffiti. As Dcoetzee notes in a current discussion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Banksy artwork (permanent link), this practice is probably untenable. In this particular case, the graffito itself is a copyright violation, as it reproduces the likeness of a copyrighted character from the Star Wars franchise, obviously without permission from the copyright holder. That means that any depiction of the graffito is also an unauthorised reproduction of a copyrighted character, and for that reason, it cannot be hosted on Commons regardless of our general stance on graffiti. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:18, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

The copyright holder would normally be the person who designed the cover or the company that they work for, and that's usually not the same person as the author. Only administrators can restore content, so you're probably better off asking at Commons:Undeletion requests. Also, namespaces are not internationalised, so Bruger:Gajolen/Billeder would be a page in the main gallery namespace, where it would not belong.   • Question 1: who took the photos? If it was you, or if you have inherited the intellectual property rights from the photographer, fine. If not, then I'm afraid that the fact that they are of a relative of yours is not relevant: if you don't own the intellectual property rights, you cannot release those rights.
  • Question 2: assuming that you either were the photographer or have inherited the intellectual property rights from the photographer, what rights do you want to release? Do you want to release these into the public domain (waiving all rights) or do you want to require attribution by reusers?
  • That said: if you've made it this far, start at Commons:Upload. Then once the photos are uploaded, and assuming the "wiki page" means a page in Wikipedia or some other WMF project, not just some random wiki, then see Commons:First steps/Reuse for how to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 06:20, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

I am creating a page for Titia Ex, an artist working with light, and I am using an image I asked permission for from her. She provided the image, and now I am asked to verify the licensing of the image. Reading up, I believe I should be adding the following: {{PD-1996|country|URAA date|reason}}

Is that correct? I feel like a tourist in a foreign city. Will you provide me A/ the location where I need to add B/ what kind of data?

Again, the image is hers and the art work in the image is hers. She expressed her permission to me via email to use this work for wikipedia. She is an important contemporary artist and I want to create an appropriate wiki page for her work.

Automatically update pages using images subsequently vectorised

Hello! This is the third time I've posted this request. I first posted the following at URL here but noone had edited the page for almost a week, so I reposted it on Wikipedia's technical village pump (now URL here) but it was archived after only 11 hours without an answer. User:AnonMoos then suggested that I ask here. I find this runaround very demotivating for someone who is trying to help by responding to calls to vectorise images.

Back to the issue: I found File:Savonius_turbine.gif listed on URL here and it is also badly pixelated, so redrew it as File:Savonius_turbine.svg. Similarly, I've vectorised File:Email.png which is cluttering up the toolserver results page with over 27000 entries.

(Edit): There's a tool that does this at COM:CDC, but it explicitly asks people not to submit requests to change files to SVG, so I'm not sure that there is a legitimate automatic tool for this, really. It Is Me Here t / c 20:04, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
If there's an actual problem with the raster version, you could file a COM:DR for it. Developing a consensus "X should be replaced by Y because X is crap" seems like a valid reason to replace X with Y by whatever technical means are available (and is supported by COM:D). I assume the "don't just file raster->svg updates" is because current consensus is that "superseded by better" isn't automatically a valid reason (again COM:D), not because the bot isn't able to do so and not because it should never be done in specific consensus cases. I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion from those responses, and I'm reverting your changes at Template:Convert to SVG/doc. As I understand it, you're frustrated because changing widespread uses of one file to another is laborious. I can sympathise with that. The reason for the barriers to making sweeping cross-project substitutions is that in the past, some editors have disagreed when raster images were replaced by vector images that differed significantly in how they portrayed the subject or that were not necessarily superior in quality. At Commons, we try hard not to force our editorial decisions onto other projects. In most cases, each project should decide for itself which version of an image to use. (It is for the same reason that we have strict guidelines for overwriting existing files.) Additionally, we like to keep the raster versions around for traceability. This, however, does not mean that we don't want Commons to host files in the most appropriate and usable format possible. In my opinion, your two examples are obvious improvements of the sort that we want to encourage. —LX (talk, contribs) 23:41, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

I still think that if there is no automated update mechanism, editors should be warned that they have to do it manually. There is possibly a script to come which provides automatic replace. I will contact you as soon as it is available. Just to clarify: CommonsDelinker does not replace .x with .svg. And given that the support for SVG rendering is changing with each update of librsvg (which MediaWiki uses for SVG to PNG conversation) it's questionable whether it is desirable to replace all usages, especially if the raster image looks ok.
On the other hand, SVG versions are clearly desired and appreciated. That's why we have {{Vva}}. Thanks for your efforts.

I don't want to do 100+ for her and am hoping there is an easy way to get it done for her.

No, there is no way to do one license that will cover all of them, unless they happen to be from a single source. Neither the Wikimedia Commons nor the Wikimedia Foundation holds rights to any but a handful of the images uploaded here (the exceptions being their own logos). Commons is a repository that makes images from many sources available, but each potentially has its own rights issues. That is why there is significant information about the rights given on each file page for an image.

Could the book list attributions and licences in an appendix and have a short note under each image? PD, Copyright, etc. They could credit some creators at the image if the creator calls for it. The appendix could be sorted by licence type to save space or just list the variuos types at the top of each appendix page. I had uploaded a file with the title, "Sir TN Sivagnanam Pillai.jpg" to link it with the wikipedia page "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._N._Sivagnanam_Pillai". The picture is that of my grandfather and I am the sole custodian of the photograph. I wished to link the page to the correct photograph, however, it got deleted after I added it to wikimedia commons.

The photograph was shot in India in 1925. Kindly Help me upload the same. I have written a letter to indemnify wikipedia with regard to the authenticity and ownership of the photograph. Kindly help. This means a lot to my family.

If "the author is unknown and dead", then it is not an own work by you. The file is protected by copyright in the United States for 95 years since publication and can't be uploaded to Commons before that. You claim that the photographer is unknown, but provide no evidence supporting your claim. If the photographer in fact isn't unknown, then you additionally need to wait until the photographer has been dead for at least 70 years, which might not yet be the case. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:03, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Press Release Pictures

I'm confused. I thought if a network releases pictures, they're exempt from copyright under fair use. After all, that's why they're releasing them: to get used in promotion. But I tried to upload a picture of Spencer Reid (from CBS), that was deleted due to copyright. So how can I make a new picture of the character in order to update the one that's already there? I've read all the articles, but I still don't get it. Do I use a screenshot instead? There's got to be a way to put up character pics, since all the wiki articles on tv have them.

We can't accept fair use images on commons. If you have a better one than http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sreid.jpg on the English Wikipedia you can replace it and tag the other for deletion.--Canoe1967 (talk) 02:20, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

If you have a better one that the network released then scale/crop it to only 300 pixels wide. As fair use you can't use a high resolution image that may effect their commercial use. Fair use images can only be used in articles to show readers what the character looks like and we are only allowed one of each.--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:49, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Are you talking about File:Giuseppeboffa.jpg? You uploaded it and it has a problem template but no {{Uwlsubst}}.
It says that File:Giuseppeboffa.jpg is in the public domain in Italy because it was taken at least 20 years ago, but there is no way to verify that it was taken at least 20 years ago.
In addition to being in the public domain in Italy, the photo needs to be in the public domain in the United States. There is no information on whether or why the photo is in the public domain in the United States. For example, all Italian photos taken in 1976 or later are protected by copyright in the United States for at least 70 years since they were taken, and in almost all cases for a much longer period. --Stefan4 (talk) 11:07, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

You need the permission of the copyright holder which is usually the photograher. You could try emailing the church site and seeing if they will release a picture for use on commons. They have to give permission for anyone to use it for any purpose. Have them email Commons:OTRS with the file name of the image you uploaded. They will also need to choose a licence. Category:CC license tags has some you can choose from. Template:Cc-by-3.0 is a very common one.--Canoe1967 (talk) 12:14, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Flickrreview template with UploadWizard?

I would like some clarification of what I should do after uploading a Flickr image. When I uploaded images from Flickr last year, the UploadWizard included {{Flickrreview}} automatically. This came in handy, I found out later, when someone later deleted their CC licensed image—the flickrbot (?)-approved tag basically proves the image was licensed for free use. Now when I upload images, there is no template. Am I supposed to tag each image manually?

My second question, I simply need to confirm this with someone: As far as I'm aware, Flickr image released CC-BY(-SA) are still under version 2.0, but the Upload Wizard only offers v.2.5. On the flickrreview template page, I read "update the license tag on the Commons image to match the Flickr one and modify the review template to {{YourUsername}}. This places it in Category:Admin reviewed Flickr images." So I should change any ...-2.5 templates to ...-2.0, and then add the flickrreview template above, correct?

Files uploaded from Flickr should always be tagged with {{Flickrreview}}. I see that you're using the Upload Wizard (there are a few other ways to upload files to Commons, but that's the most common one). If you selected "The copyright holder published their photo or video on Flickr with the right license", I would consider the lack of review tagging a rather serious bug in the Upload Wizard which should be reported in Bugzilla; you should not have to add the tag manually. In general, I'd recommend using one of our dedicated tools for uploading files from Flickr, as it saves a lot of manual work and eliminates the risk of many potential mistakes. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:30, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Problems with updating image.

Hi, I've been trying to update File:FA-GA-monthly-growth.png with the latest data. In fact I've updated it four times using the wizard and these uploads appear as thumbnails four times in the file history. Hi, I see the updated version. If you don't see it, there may be a cache problem somewhere between the saved file and your viewer. You can try a purge or wait until it updates. Uploading five versions on top of each other probably doesn't help. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:04, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Thanks for that. Interestingly, for me, the 800 x 356 pixels and 1,258 × 560 pixels previews are "out of date" but the 320 x 142 pixels and 640 x 285 pixels previews are correct. Those were my first image uploads since July 2012 and I was have problems, so I will admit to editor incompetence. Copyright help regarding File:Carol Padden.jpg

I have never uploaded images here before, so I don't know what approach to use to picking a license since there are so many. I honestly don't know who took this picture or where it originally came from since this picture is in so many places on the internet, but I figured that the UCSD article might be the most likely place. Carol Padden, the person in the image, said that she thinks this picture is public domain because it is everywhere, and she doesn't mind it being on Wikipedia. In fact, she thinks it would be good to have a picture in the article about her, which is what I would like to do. Any advice what I should do about picking a license? Or do I need to contact more people to get a verification on what license is appropriate?

  • Sorry, that won't do. Unless the photographer overtly signs over the rights, the photographer remains the holder of the copyright and no one else can release them. Perhaps counterintuitively, the subject of the photo cannot release the photographer's rights. The fact that the image has been heavily plagiarized on the internet doesn't change anything and certainly does not put the picture in the public domain. You don't get to pick a license and offer a work that isn't yours. Only the copyright owner can pick a license. As UCSD uses this photo, your guess that it originates from them is plausible. It may have been taken by an employee in their service of communications and public affairs, with the copyright owned by UCSD. You can contact them (http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/contact), in the manner specified on Commons:OTRS, and ask if they want to release the photo under a free license and confirm through OTRS. A photograph of an artwork

In writing an article about the local poet who died in 2005, I would like to use my photo of a pastel portrait of the poet, made on my commission by my sister in 2003. I have my sister's permission to display her work. However, the portrait itself belongs to the family of the deceased and I am not in contact with any of them. Is it O.K. to go ahead? Hello, I want to get the right to change a file name, for deleting my own mistakes in writing and spelling. There is a possibility indicated for requiring such a right, but one should fill something in a "text area" and gets no hint where this text area is to be found. Searching by license type

I'm working on a project where I need public domain images. Right now, I do a search for a given subject, then visit each image individually to figure out the licensing for the image. I wish that there were an advanced search with a set of checkboxes for various licensing types (e.g., "attribution required", "share alike", "public domain") so that I could automagically filter out non-public-domain images. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there is no such thing. Back in Aug 2011, some user asked this same question, but was told that there was no such search tool (see "Public search" here).

Is there now a way to filter results by license type? If not, could that go on a feature request list somewhere?

Graffiti Copyright

Hi all, I would like to know which is the most appropriate licence to upload a picture (made by me with my own camera) of a graffiti stencil. I took a picture of a "famous" graffiti (the author - italian - is known) and I would like to upload it on Commons (obviously indicating the name of the author of the graffiti) but i do not know if I can do it ... I checked some Bansky picture as an example (Image:Banksy_Kissing_Policemen.jpg, File:Banksy.in.bristols.park.street.arp.jpg, File:The_Cat.jpg, w:File:WallAndPiece.jpg) but they all seem to have different licences... --EffeX2 (talk) 09:55, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. Multiple issues here:
  • I presume 19 February 2013 is just an upload date. Date should be when the photo was taken, not when it was uploaded.
  • Intellectual property rights are completely separate from physical possession of the photo, and as far as I know in the U.S. they can only be passed by actual written permission. If Rita Reif is still alive you can get that permission from her; if not, it would have to come from her heirs. COM:OTRS explains how to pass that permission to the Wikimedia Foundation. I know this is a pain in the butt, but otherwise we'd have people all the time uploading things they don't have the rights to. If you are yourself her heir, you can just use {{CC-BY-SA-3.0-heirs}}, {{PD-heirs}} or something similar.
  • As for how you include a photo in an article once it is uploaded, see en:Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial#Thumbnails.
  • Categorization: as a beginner, usually your best bet is to look at something similar and well-categorized, then use analogous categories. See, for example Category:Aaron Copland (a category, not a photo, but if you hit the edit button you can see the categories that this category is placed in; you place a photo in a category exactly the same way).

Guidance on Flickr Images

I'm looking for some guidance, regarding status of some images from Flickr. I found what appear to promotional images from user AsianIdolsNetwork under a cc license, a handful of which are of Akiho Yoshizawa, (she is on the list of Wikipedia requested photographs of sex workers). Is there any way I to find out if they are reputable (i.e. do they have the rights to publish these images under creative commons or is it copyright washing). I want to figure this out before uploading them, so as to avoid adding copyvios to the Commons. Any help / guidance / advice would be great, Thank you! Copyright —British weekly newspapers 1895 to 1910 (with a particular focus on a special topic not in other newspapers of that day)

I have found the above collection of old newspapers in a nearby library. I realise I can go there and gather information from those old copies and use it in WP articles but there are also many photographs, pictures and diagrams. Is it safe under copyright laws for me to scan these images and display them in WM Commons? The originals belong to the library - do they have any right to control how I might use the images? Mere ownership of the work doesn't give you copyright, and if you're copying the images, the library doesn't get any rights that way. (If they were doing the copying, it's possible in the UK they could get a copyright to the picture, but one that Commons has specifically chosen to ignore; also, simply scanning is generally not thought to produce a copyright even under UK's sweat of the brow copyright laws.) They're automatically out of copyright in the US, but with the UK's life+70 copyright laws, you'll have to worry about the death dates of the authors. It should be easy to tell if a photograph is anonymous, but if it's not, you'll need to figure if the photographer died before 1942.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:00, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Here you can see some of the images and here is some of the text
My intended method of working is for the library (for a respectable fee) to scan and email copies to me about one mile away (I am physically unable to visit the library). I am not in the UK. I then upload any images I think are particularly cunningly illustrative of something to WM Commons for use within articles.
Its a newspaper they've no bylines(right terminology?) and the images are not credited (though the little boat might be). Do my two examples from Ebay make your advice any simpler? Many thanks, Eddaido (talk) 07:39, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

I need help setting internal links between pages

I am a new user. I am creating a coloring book in wikijunior: Wikijunior:Skateboard Alphabet Coloring Pages

I want to setup links to each page in the book (which is 40 pages: 26 letters, 10 numbers, one alphabet chart, two numbers charts and one page for printing).

My title page has links to the individual pages. The individual pages have no links to the next and previous pages.

I tried to use the codes used by the books Wikijunior:Alphabet and Wikijunior:Flower Alphabet, but I cannot determine how they are coded or formatted.

I'd appreciated any help with this matter.

Image Description in multiple languages

The Description in the Summary accompanying [[File:BankingCrises.svg]]. appears in English, Spanish and French. However, when I try to add a fourth language (German), only the English appears -- the Spanish and French disappear. Is there a way I can get the fourth language (German in this case) to display with the English, Spanish and French?

Also, how is one to know when looking at a description the languages for which a description is available?

Note: I replaced the French with the German and got English, Spanish and German to display. When I then added the French, only English displayed. There seems to be a limit of three languages, and when more are present only one appears.  ???

Are you asking where to see the categories that CategorizationBot had suggested, after other users removed them from the description page? You can see them in the page's history, in the version corresponding to their addition by CategorizationBot. Or are you asking how the bot chooses those categories? You did not explain who Mr. Hines is, what he has to do with this photo and what would allow him to grant copyright permissions about it. For the photo to be kept, it is important to identify its author/copyright holder is and to obtain from him that he offers the photo under a free license. Jim Henson's Muppets

I had an image and a derivative of some of Jim Henson's muppets deleted. I just wanted to double check that this is correct. I didn't intend any intentional copyvio, and I'm truly sorry if that's what ended up happening. But that would mean a bunch more images of muppets (not all of them mine) are copyvio and would need to be deleted too, wouldn't it? That is correct and some of those images are a problem. Someone may nominate them for deletion. As with text, pictures of copyright items can be created by individuals to describe copyright items, but they shouldn't be very very close copies or they are copy-violations. They need to be far enough away from the original to be OK. Where the line is drawn varies from person to person, lawyer to lawyer, image to image. Permission or a release is best of all, otherwise it's a matter of 'when someone gets around to nominating them for deletion discussion'. Is it possible to do a "batch upload" of all the images linked from this web page. I think they would be useful for lots of county articles, as well as for the article I'm working on, and the Category:William Smith (geologist). My question is,do I need permission to use a photo of one of the WWII destroyers for a project I am working on.I am writing a story concerning naval warfare (on a fictional basis) and wanted a photo of one of them as the visual inspiration behind the destroyers that were destroyed in the story.   • Many of the ones in Category:World War II cruisers should be public domain images. If you use those then you shouldn't have to worry about 'attribution' issues.   • The fact that something is often seen by the public does not mean that there is an right to reuse it to the extent that Commons requires. The English-language Wikipedia (and quite a few other languages) allows for "fair use" but Commons does not.   • I'm guessing the thing about the photo is a separate question from the one about the University logo. It would help a lot if you could be more specific about what is happening: there are a lot of ways to upload to Commons, and a lot of possible error messages, and if you are more specific someone can probably help you. You're on Commons right now, not Wikipedia. Commons is a media repository used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. We do not host articles. As LX notes, this wasn't the place to ask but I happen to know the answer. you should create the English-language article in the English-language Wikipedia at a title corresponding to that of the French-language article in the French Wikipedia. If it's a person's name or place name, then typically the title should be the same. Otherwise, typically the title should be translated. You can then use Interwiki links to connect the two articles to one another. You'll need to send an extra email form to the guy you asked, and get him to add his authorisation, or better, maybe add the text from the form to AA letterhead, sign it, and send a scan to you. I've seen some pictures with such letters as permission, like ones from the Kremlin and they seem cooler than the usual simple text email which the person types their name into and sends to permissions at commons. Either is good though. You can read up about the process at Commons:OTRS. If you took the picture yourself, you'll need to give everyone your own permission as well, but that is a lot easier and it's pretty much automatic as you upload it. As for the permission for the use of the image, it's apparent that the photographer was not explained that the image would be re-licensed, nor was he explained what that licensing entails. Right. Permission to upload a file to Wikimedia Commons for use in a Wikipedia article is not sufficient for the file to be hosted on Commons. Commons only accepts copyrighted content if it is explicitly released under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose. You cannot select some arbitrary copyright license (which was never mentioned in the e-mail conversation) on behalf of the copyright holder. The proper way to request the kind of permission we need and to submit evidence of such permission is described at Commons:OTRS. Most Wikipedias have copyright rules similar to those on Commons, but not quite the same. Therefore, each image must be checked before uploading it here. If the image is under a free license, for example {{CC-by-SA}}, it can be moved to Commons. Images that are uploaded with a fair use rationale must not be moved to Commons. Images that are claimed to be in the public domain might be OK, but keep in mind that they have to be public domain in both the country of origin and the US. For more information about acceptable licenses, see COM:L. If you have a particular image that you are unsure about, just post a link. I uploaded a family photo to Commons taken in 1918 that I have in my possession. The photo is of my great grandfather standing in front of a mimeograph machine that is documented in Wikipedia. In the process of loading, it asked about copyright. The photo is not copyrighted as it is only a family photo. We have a general {{Heirs-license}} wrapper which can be used with any license, e.g. {{heirs-license|{{Cc-by-3.0}}}}. However, this (and {{PD-heirs}}) would only apply if (1) the photo was actually created by a family member and (2) you are their sole heir or have permission from all other heirs. Loss of image resolution

I have uploaded File:NorthDevonParishesMap.PNG but it appears with insufficient resolution. Have tried saving it on my graphics application package (on which I created it) with greater resolution, increased from 300px to 600px, but it seems to make no difference to clarity of image uploaded to commons. You'll see the full resolution (945×849) version if you click on the image itself on the file description page or on the "Full resolution" link below the image. Depending on what browser you use and the size of your browser window, your browser may zoom out to fit the image within the browser window. If so, clicking on the image again (the mouse pointer will probably look like a magnifying glass) should show it in the original resolution.
If you wish to adjust the size of the version included in en:North Devon, see en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial#Width in pixels.
If what you changed was the resolution in DPI (dots or pixels per inch) rather than pixels, that will have no effect on screen, as that essentially only relates to physical size when printing. —LX (talk, contribs) 18:17, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

The photograher/copyright holder needs to send permission through Commons:OTRS and include the file name so they can find it. "File:Colm MagnerImage.jpg" If you took it with a remote or timer then it would be you.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:06, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Warning an IP of vandalism?

How do I warn an IP for slight (not grave) vandalism on an image of mine? I searched the archives here, and found a user being warned on his account over at the en.wiki page. That's not terribly helpful for Commons. I'm looking for a quick and easy template, not really interested in typing up a whole thing. diff here for anyone interested. – Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 20:02, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Update: Apparently the IP made a joke edit on the English Wikipedia as well, so warning the IP was therefore easy. Also, I did a check for Twinkle on Commons and it exists, so my question has been answered. – Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 20:17, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

File:Kucher Makar Averkiev2.jpg, revisited

Three files (File:Kucher Makar Averkiev2.jpg, File:Kruk Ivan Markov2.jpg, File:Kosarenchuk Ignat Ivan2.jpg were deleted by mistake. I put all licenses as usually ({{PD-old-100}} {{PD-anon-1923}} {{PD-RusEmpire}}). I received notes for another 5 files, I also put the licences and remove the plates {{no license}} Is it correct? I found that I asked about three files (File:Kucher Makar Averkiev2.jpg, File:Kruk Ivan Markov2.jpg, File:Kosarenchuk Ignat Ivan2.jpg at 17:27, 27 February 2013 (UTC) And I received nice answer from Maproom "They are all an unpleasant green shade, but I wouldn't call that a problem.
