- @Begoon: Thanks for the quick action on this! It seems the cleanup has caused some fuzzy artifacts along the top of the center engine and the trailing edge of the wings. That's me being clumsy with a mask, sorry, I've fixed that, I think, if you look now. If you really want all the specks/scratches back on the body I can easily do that, but have a look first, please. Kitagawa Utamaro's "Mother and Child" offering

I am not sure of the Japanese title of the image; this artist did multiple artworks on this subject. The print I have (and have scanned) is of a woman holding a red baby and a pipe and exhaling smoke. The print I had would not fit on my scanner bed and is thus done in four parts which will need to be stitched together and used to eliminate process artifacts.

Each image is a little less than 5100×7000 pixels and has significant overlap, so the final image would be a bit larger than that. To compare to a small version hosted online (actually the only copy I could find with a quick shallow search), see http://player.slideplayer.com/14/4427142/data/images/img54.png (340×504 but that site allows download of a .ppt with embedded 754×1166 version). Obviously a museum-quality scan would be best, but this would allow a filename over which such a file, if later found, could be written.

@PawełMM, Rodrigo.Argenton, and Jmabel: I eventually found this was due to a bandwidth restriction, which has since been lifted since I upgraded my hosting for unrelated reasons. If you're able can we straighten the chimneys and increase exposure? i don't know how to use graphics programs other than the dumb instagram ones; Details of your request go here… But with the last image, this is most interesting. I have quite a few fascinating shots taken on film from a $2 camera called Ringeris M313 which has a terrible lens but in my opinion this makes it part of the composition. @MagentaGreen and PawełMM: Perhaps you would be better off starting from the much higher resolution version (1865 × 2951 pixels depending on crop) from the single page scans in jp2000 from this version of the book. Look at the image again, PawełMM, middle bottom, Hanooz left an image annotation showing where - hover the image on the file page. You accidentally slipped and 'splodged' the bottom middle drawing. I don't have mouch thought about this so I made you two versions with minor changes of tone and brightness, one of them cropped a little bit. I wouldn't indeed remove all shadows from the lawn because of the tree in the middle, where you see perspective and light of the photograph quite clearly. Like this it looks a bit unnatural to me so I could restore a part of the shadow. But if you're fine with it I'll leave it like that.--Der Angemeldete (talk) 22:59, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Seems to me that when the uploader said "removed shadows at the bottom" he probably meant only the stray shadows at the bottom for which the objects casting the shadows are out of shot, and to leave the shadows of the 2 central people and other, higher shadows intact. @Carnby: It would, indeed, be possible to make the spots of sunlight nearly "disappear", which were on the glass, behind that you photographed. But since there were a loss of color information at those points one either can reconstruct them with other areas of the picture or give them an extreme high contrast. Both will either (mis)lead to really unnatural colors and perspective or overemphasize the grainy structure and chromatic aberration on the roof of the building, because it was photographed against the light and, I guess, out from a moving car or something. The result, as you see in my example, would be a noisy picture, way to dark, with unnatural colors and a high loss of details. I don't know the purpose you want to use it for, but, from an editors view, Jeff's version is nearly the most sensibel thing possible.--Der Angemeldete (talk) 16:49, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Battersea Library - visualisation

Request: Deep breath. This is taken from a scan of an 1888 publication, The Builder. As you can see, we're losing some of the image in the crease between the two pages.

I'm wondering it it would be possible to make a single well-formed image, in which the two pages are properly aligned and in which the missing detail is reintroduced, e.g. by mirroring the right-side of the right-most bay and/or grabbing detail from the left side of the central bay or the left side of the leftmost bay.

Remembering that this will be seen by most users at a small size - much like previous fixes done for the lead images in en:Battersea Town Hall, any miracles you can perform would be most appreciated. The building (ignoring the right-side octagonal tower) is symmetrical, and so there seems to me to be enough information there to permit reasonable assumptions to be made as to the amount by which the two pages need to be pulled apart, and to understand what detail needs to be copied & repurposed. Note also we have File:Battersea Library 08.JPG, a photo of the as-built building, which again clarifies some of the uncertaintly (e.g. how close the windows are to the projecting bay).

Finally, the ideal result will be an image like File:New Parochial Offices, Battersea - Front Elevation.png, which is to say, white not yellow, and with the border and caption removed.

Here's a greyscaled version, oval cropped, in case that's any use: File:Nikolay Muraviev (cropped).png. It needs to be png for the "cut-out" shape, so you might find thumbnails a bit 'soft'. It's possible, if that is a problem, to upload a jpeg vesion of the oval crop, but that will have a white area around the oval. It's even possible to make that surrounding area match 'infobox grey' so that it looks like a proper cutout in a standard infobox - but that's a bit of a 'kludge' which I'd only really do on request, because it makes reuse of the image outside an infobox or with custom 'skins' problematic. If png thumbnailing would be fixed by mediawiki life would be so much easier... Otherwise, yes, you can do a rectangular crop with Commons:CropTool - but be sure to use "lossless" mode. Well the time isn't completely wasted - it's another version/option that can be used which we didn't have before. The original image is used at pl.wiki and wikidata. You could ask them which version they prefer, I guess. Or PawełMM and yourself could come to an amicable agreement about which one to use, and be bold. Your right, I got myself back but it stays an annoying fact since Pawel did some work for unrelialble Users too. Wasn't even one of the last ones a copyvio' that that got deleted after he improved it? A tool that provides doing futile work by marking potential fake accounts or trolls would be very helpful at this point. Done - it rendered fine for me in Firefox, but Windows 7 couldn't thumbnail it, and PS6 opened it as flat cyan. I've got Firefox set to ignore colour profiles, so that would explain that.

Once I used Edit => Assign profile => Don't colour manage in PS6 it seems fine. I think the profile may have been corrupted, because PS6 couldn't display a proper name for it. I adjusted the colour balance a little. -- Begoon 15:01, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

@Oaktree b, here`s another version with more film grain and less use of soft focus.

@Timdwilliamson, You speak of a "strong retouch" yourself. Our guidelines for "overwriting existing files" recommend not overwriting the original in such case. The fact that even old hands do not follow these rules should not be seen as an incentive to do the same. It is true that no information is lost, especially in this case where there are other versions. Nevertheless, the comparison between the original and the derivative work becomes more difficult. After many more edits, the original file will probably not be noticed anymore and will be forgotten. So please be so kind to upload your edit as a separate file, even if it takes a little more effort.

Hi @Jeromi Mikhael, I've reworked here again, for I had the impression that something went wrong in correcting the distortion because the person is unnaturally broad. This can happen, if the adjustment handles are not retracted to the position of the original image. Why do you still want to use images to convey purely textual information after the advice and solutions I showed you at w:User:QuackGuru/Requests#textasimages, and further down that page? It's not an image on the source website - it's html text, so turning it into an image by screenshotting or typesetting an image is, imo, a decidedly sub-optimal way to present it, as I said there when I pointed you to (w:WP:TEXTASIMAGES).
If it's just text I still don't understand why you want to manually and artificially 'create' images of something that isn't an image to begin with and you seem so dead set against just using that text - for legibility, searchability, accessibility (screen readers for the blind), ease of update, flexibility if you want to tweak style, download speed, 'diffable' history, the list goes on... If you just think it's 'messy' having all the html text formatting in the article wikitext you can 'externalise' that into template(s). Comment@Jeff G.: Done sort of roughly but should be much better than what you were experiencing. Mostly its the middle bit at the bottom. A true recreation of the map with all stitched together is weeks of work for this, sorry, at least a full week I thought. ~~For some reason it gives me the error for section 3 "This file did not pass file verification" twice now though the file opens fine.~~ Anyways, Hugin is a flat tyre on this. An idea might be to install a second GIMP in another folder, then open a pair of images and work on the edges. I will leave it for later but it's all good practice. I can't for the life of me figure out how I got this resolution. I made the map on top of one of the smaller stitched maps. I tried going back to resize and paste on, but it requires my computer to juggle something like a gygabyte of memory owing to the 70mb+20mb files, and it starts to freeze and is unworkable.. This isn't perfect, you can still see traces of the pattern, but here's what 3 passes of an FFT filter, greyscale, and a little selective median gives. Someone may do better.
I'd have liked to have found a better original to work from - google books images are often poor quality, but archive.org didn't seem to have that volume for me to grab a better scan from and a quick search failed. Anyway... here's File:Anthony Eden (retouched).jpg as requested. In addition to the watermark removal I also did a little cleaning of specks/scratches - but if you don't think that's an improvement, or would just rather not have it, it's a separate step, so you can revert just the cleaning and retain the watermark removal. I'm going to leave it where it is, as a new version. In many cases, a watermark was created with a semitransparent layer containing light or dark text. With a mask as close to the font as possible, we can often remove the watermark applying basic techniques such as dodging and burning. This has the advantage that the clone stamp or a similar tool barely needs to be used. The result may be less destructive and closer to the original. The parts of the facade that are overexposed are just white. The structure that was there is lost and cannot be brought back. Unless it is a camera model that can store raw images and you still have that raw image there is nothing that can be done. option 1: convert in svg, means simplification, different appearance (i do not recommend, too complex)

Removing chain in the back

I tried to enhance this pic; however the results did not satisfy me. The barks in the foreground are too dark, the sky looks whitish, the foliage is not green enough. That's nice. I did an "alternative" version at Archäologisches Museum Thessaloniki (Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Θεσσαλονίκης) (33954449868) - retouched.jpg with a different background and a little sharpening. That has an "infobox grey" #f8f9fa background - but that can just be reverted to the previous version for white if that's more appropriate (e.g. you're not using it in an infobox)... -- Begoon 23:57, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

The colour looks great Pawel but they won't take even the smallest errors on the horizon in COM:FA. I could do it in GIMP but it would take hours to get all the detail on the horizon. Hoping someone might have photoshop or something? ~ R.T.G 09:26, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

They say it still requires a slight touch up on the left hand side to hide any trace of editing. I suppose I can see just a little blue on the edge of some of the trees that stand out on the horizon.
