Subcategories[edit]

When I created this Cat to organize about 1400 pdf files I had the subcategories on the main page. I have been off the internet for 3-4 years and now see that the unfiled pdf files is quite large. I would like to put the subcategories back on the main page to categorize these files and also to (assume) that if people see the actual subcategory names they will put them into the proper or new categories. I will leave this announcement up for a week or two for discussion and a notice on the page. There were and probably are a large number of non image files such as CV's and Biographies which should not be on Commons but on Wikipedia. I will be speedy deleting these as I have done in the past. Other non image pdf files such as books, manuscripts, etc will stay and be placed in appropriate Cats WayneRay (talk) 18:26, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki improvements[edit]

People interested about advances in handling PDFs on Commons are invited to comment on the phabricator task (link on the right). Incnis Mrsi (talk) 11:11, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Placing mw.loader.load('//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Incnis_Mrsi/PDF-PNG.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); to user scripts enables a script replacing PDF→JPEG abominations both on content and File:⋯.pdf wiki pages with PNGs. Isn’t it the same for DjVu files, Incnis Mrsi? But I do not get your intention. Could you give some examples with bad rendering (I think, not here, but in the Phab ticket)? BTW also for TIFF files the preview is JPEG, while for SVG and XCF it seems to be PNG. — Speravir – 21:06, 5 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting… I was unaware that mw:Extension:PdfHandler imitates the DjVu handler (presumedly from MediaWiki proper) so closely that my script works for DjVu without any modification. For TIFF this is not a serious problem – PNG is the main format for storing lossless images on Commons. As for examples of bad JPEGs, this category is full of them (and subcategories, like PDF files in English). Some are also listed on w:Help_talk:Pictures #Rendering_of_PDFs (and one of them is already mentioned in T38597 for months). Incnis Mrsi (talk) 06:14, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, “as for examples of bad JPEGs …”: I first didn’t click on the “PDF→JPEG abominations” link. So it gets clear. Perhelion pointed there to template {{BadPDF}} with its examples, too, but the example given by you is really vey distinct. — Speravir – 00:48, 7 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
