Toolbar Button Sub Category[edit]

  • I suggest that MediaWiki edit toolbar has sub categories. We can classify them into:
    • Mediawiki Code Buttons
    • HTML code buttons
    • Char, string insert
    • Template add

Yeah, it really needs subcategories. The line between "MediaWiki code", "HTML code" and templates isn't too clear. Essentially, it's all MediaWiki code. Would you split up a button for ''...'' and <i>...</i>? Only the last one you can call HTML (or more accurately HTML-like). Maybe to start with:
  • Formatting buttons - e.g. both of the examples above.
  • Template buttons - or "Template insertion buttons" but I think the meaning is clear enough, same with "text buttons"
  • Text buttons - plain characters and strings, no markup (and maybe one just for "special characters", we have a lot of these)
  • Function buttons - don't know if there's enough to warrant this, but we have some like (zoom in).
The template ones should probably be split into multiple categories, but I don't know what yet. Also, we should probably prefix these with something like "MediaWiki edit toolbar". E.g. MediaWiki edit toolbar formatting buttons. I would love to put all the crappy duplicate ones in some special folder to get them out of the way (these are so hard to delete because people use them in their .js). Good buttons, by the way. Hello, i dont really like categories by usage, because the same icon can mean (can be used for) many things. Maybe we can split the category in 2 according to the content:
  • icons containing a character or a text
  • icons containing an image
But i have no idea to split it more. ~ bayo or talk 12:56, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But in this case, I think by usage is helpful. I mean, that's what these are for. They're toolbar buttons. The intended function is more important then what it is of. For example, the button with #R, could be used for anything, but I think a category like "Redirect buttons" is better than "Buttons containing the letter R" (both of these are just examples, they're too specific to actually use, and the button can be in, e.g. R, also). Let's not separate it too much from reason why they're even here. I doubt anyone not looking for a MediaWiki toolbar button would find these useful. Here's part of the problem: . Thanks policy! Rocket000 (talk) 01:32, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know about policy. Another problem is URL is often every time hard coded into Wikimedia project pages (without wikilink: Common.css, JavaScript tools...). It is very hard to check. I dont know if media redirection work with full URL like [1]. ~ bayo or talk 12:56, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's the main reason these are so hard to get rid of. I'm sure those redirects wouldn't work (although I've never tried it). I wish people would just learn to upload over truly superseded images instead of making more and more versions. I'm pretty bold when it comes to this (e.g. File:Button support.png), and never made anyone mad. ;) Rocket000 (talk) 21:29, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{Edit protected}} Most of the images in the category belong to this subcategory. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 19:37, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done You appear to have done this already. Please don't use the edit protected template on non-protected pages. --Majora (talk) 01:45, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously, 1234qwer1234qwer4? Do not undo my entire edit, post and all, like that. If I was incorrect, tell me why. This category page is not protected. If you want to add it as a subcategory to another category go ahead and do so. If you want something else actually use your words and say so. --Majora (talk) 20:16, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Majora: But the files aren't! There aren't only images of buttons here, that's why there is the mentioned subcategory. The files should be moved there. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 22:51, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh...you want to recategorize the images in this category. Do you want all of the images to be added to Category:MediaWiki edit toolbar buttons? Do you want to remove the current category? Do you only want some of them to be added or moved? Details on exactly what you want would be helpful. --Majora (talk) 02:19, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I want that images to be moved there which show single buttons of the MediaWiki edit toolbar. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 11:57, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Probably. Since you didn't tell me exactly what images you were talking about, again, I went off of those listed on MediaWiki edit toolbar. Next time, if you are going to do an edit request do it in the form of "change A to B" please and state precisely what images you want changed. Admins are far less likely to be helpful if they have to hunt down what you are talking about. --Majora (talk) 01:48, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
