Subcategories

[edit]

Attending the Nisei Week Festival last week made me realize that the Nisei categories here need more care and attention. I've created (and will create) some subcategories (mostly by location) to reduce the number of NARA images that have originally been placed directly under Category:Japanese American internment (or under some city categories). In the process, however, I've also bumped into (and will likely bump into) some NARA images that have never been categorized before. Until I (or someone else) can create appropriate subcategories for these orphan images, we need to place them here (so we don't have to look for them again). As a result, you may see temporary increases here, but you should see a significant decrease in a week or so. I also plan to reorganize assembly centers and relocation centers with the use of "by" subcategories, as I did with Category:Japanese American internment processing by city‎. In addition, I will try to show relationships among places of residence, assembly centers and relocation centers, as I did with the Granada-Merced-Woodland case. The last process takes time and I may not be able to find all the connections, but I'll try; please do make corrections if I happen to link the wrong places. If you wish to help or can come up with a better way, you're more than welcome! Thanks. --Nandaro (talk) 23:26, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if anyone is reading this, but I've made most of the updates/restructuring described above. I'm still running into uncategorized files and files placed directly under city categories with no link to any of the internment categories so I'll see how many more will pop up. I will also continue linking assembly centers with relocation centers to indicate where people came from and where they went. I try to reduce/minimize repetitive categorization so the same photos don't appear at multiple levels in the same category branch (if you know what I mean), but a couple of such edits got reverted so maybe I shouldn't be too strict in that regard. Especially, "people" categories are tricky when you have something like the Santa Anita Assembly Center, which temporarily held people from Northern and Southern California and Hawaii... and sent them to three or four different relocation centers. Some efforts were apparently made by the U.S. government to keep families and neighbors together, but I'm not sure how efficient or consistent the system was. Anyway, because of this, some "people" categories may seem repetitive. Again, please jump in and make contributions/corrections at any time if you find or think of anything. --Nandaro (talk) 20:51, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
