  • Because it's relatively easy to change the captions on SVGs and "blank" PNGs, as is currently being discussed at Commons talk:Language policy, so I guess it may depend on the outcome of that conversation --Interiot 17:05, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Fools errand

• Looking over the many technical images in this cat, I've formed the firm opinion that "Image internationalization" is a fools errand.
• Creating a text free template image that others could adapt to their language, and a category schema, images specific to FooGooMoo language, would be a better use of manpower resources.
  • It's very simple, the text in these images is there to Save space in the articles within which they are embedded. Perhaps the originators of this concept need spend a few months editing in one of the encyclopedia projects to realize how important and special that property is, but rest assured, many good articles are jammed with the competing needs of section breaks, and keeping an image used in the section, without jamming in an unsightly manner with others, when someone zooms in or zooms out on the page. Wikimarkup already moves stuff around too much, so accommodating the captions these templates tend to include is very very contraindicated. Downright counterproductive, cause others will be and must be created to fill the language vs. space needs on the 'pedias. In short, at least don't bother deleting same.

And now you know it too. Do the cats by language thing, use a template to auto-cat those, and put these in the 'basis category' for the blanks. Let others take the blanks, and cat those in and by the languages, and stop trying to empty the ocean with a fork! // FrankB 01:48, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Tool

I can use Inkscape to create the tags translated in a language and to translate to any other (in a previous only-one-language images). But also Mediawiki and Commons could include an agreement with Inkscape to integrate it as an online tool for Commons uploaded files (only for uploaded files) to edit them to put the text in a translatable way (in one file, I have to delete the previous text and put a new text as real text (object in Inkscape jargon), not as "images" within the picture). 09:45, 20 May 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by BoldLuis (talk • contribs) 09:45, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Hurra, worked for me

I edited he page of the image File:Taxonomy and phylogenetics.svg and added:

{{translation possible}}
{{validSVG}}

Clicked in the use the use the SVG Translate tool and translated the fields within the image and uploaded it using the tool.

And now, it is multilingual!!.

I think a connect with Wikidata would give great advantages, automatically proposing translated data items. For example, for kingdom could propose "reino" in Spanish. And so on.

Is there any Wikidata WikiProject here?.
