Move request[edit]

Oppose Breda in the Netherlands seems to be the main subject of interest which is supported by the fact that Breda has its own article using that name at the English wikipedia: Breda, for other uses like Breda, Iowa the articles are disambiguated. It seems appropriate to use the same strategy here. Another example here on commons is Amsterdam with two categories: Amsterdam and Amsterdam, New York. --ErickAgain (talk) 13:55, 8 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Comment We make only exceptions to that rule for capitals and cities with a major cultural/historical heritage (and for other practical reasons) such as Rome, Paris, Venice, London, Amsterdam, ... I understand that "your" Breda is the most important, but for the people in Iowa, Italy and Ireland, their Breda is the most important. We will not waste our time (as tried with category:Soest (disambiguation) and User_talk:Foroa#Category:Soest) to try to find out which one is the most important. --Foroa (talk) 14:06, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment The oppose is purely based on the fact that Breda in the Netherlands seems to be the main subject of interest according to wikipedias (all but three of them contain the article "Breda" without disambiguation). I'm not trying to start a discussion on importance and i'm not sure i consider Breda "mine", just stating facts about the use of Breda on wikipedia thinking it had some relevance for the naming of articles on commons.
If it is a policy or standard naming scheme on commons than please go ahead and make the move. But what about categories like Category:Streets in Breda, Category:Squares in Breda, Category:Sculptures in Breda? Shouldn't these be moved to Category:Streets in Breda, Netherlands etc. also? --ErickAgain (talk) 15:45, 8 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]
I understand perfectly your opposition, I hate to bring the "bad news", but most wikipedias keep the "main" term for the article that was first created. We cannot say on commons: this was the first, so this is the main in our category system. Experience shows that the sooner we get disambiguation, the less we have troubles in converting it. (I spend half of my time renaming categories because of that problem). Other renamings are less urgent; the most important is that the root category avoids ambiguity, the rest will follow almost automatically. Anyway, I categorised and renamed already several categories in Breda. There is a very good and active contributor, but he seems to think that the Prinsenkade and Veemarktstraat is an exclusivity of Breda. --Foroa (talk) 18:47, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
