English: The Yamada family for two centuries through the Tokugawa period (1603-1868) maintained a hereditary lacquerware tradition in Japan. Yamada Joka, who was appointed official intro maker to the shogun in the late 17th century, was the founder. Every succeeding him in this capacity head of the Yamada family was named either Joka or Jokasai. The exact number of generations is unknown.
