Winneba is the capital of the Effutu Municipal District of the Central Region of Ghana.
According to their tradition, the contemporary Winneba grown up from a coastal village with name "Tumpa" or "Simpa", which was founded around of 1515 by Fetu people from Degho (the later Cape Coast). Firstly with the construction of the British fort in the 17th century appears the name "Wimpa" or "Winnebah" in the annals of the history.
