....Coi laceri avanzi dell'esercito tornò in Milano un piccolo cane volpino, partito anch'esso nel Febbraio [1812] e che aveva seguito sempre i resti dal reggimento dei Veliti anche dopo la morte del suo padrone - TOFINO così chiamato, benchè cieco corse subito ad accovacciarsi nella garitta di guardia del Palazzo Reale, dove il suo padrone aveva montato più volte la guardia, e per quanto le sentinelle austriache cercassero di cacciarnelo non vi riuscivano. Anzi il Comando austriaco ingiungeva alle sentinelle di rispettarlo e la cittadinanza correva a portare cibo a quella povera bestiola, che simboleggiava, come dice il Comandini, la sentimentale suggestiva fedeltà alla Bandiera, che anche oggi dopo cento anni [1912] rievocando gli eroismi e i duri sacrifici degli avi, onoriamo.
