The Spreekanal is a canalized left side arm of the river Spree in the center of Berlin, Germany. Together with the main arm of the Spree, the Spreekanal surrounds the Spreeinsel, where some of Berlin's most signficant buildings are located. Historically, several names have been used for different parts of the Spreekanal including Friedrichsgracht or Friedrichsgraben for its southern part (up to Gertraudenbrücke), Schleusengraben for a middle part (downriver Getraudenbrücke to Schleusenbrücke) and Kupfergraben for the northern part (downriver Schlossbrücke or, more specifically, downriver Eiserne Brücke to the junction with the Spree's main arm). These names, particularly Kupfergraben, remain in usage to some degree.
