Sir Winston Churchill Square, at the intersection of Downing and Bleecker Streets with the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, is a garden and sitting area which also serves as the entrance to the Downing Street Playground. Owned and operated by the New York City Parks Department, which purchased the site in 1943, the sitting area was designed by George Vellonakis; it was rebuilt in 1998-99, and now includes an armillary on a pedestal. The square sits across Bleecker Street from Father Demo Square. Artist Bob Brisley currently oversees all maintenance, design, and plantings, building upon most of what remains of former gardener Bert Waggott’s genious, creating a vibrantly colorful and lovely park.
