The origin of this necklace is unknown but it was likely acquired in the 1870s or 1880s, using funds from the Italian State Treasury rather than the House of Savoy, so it became a part of the Italian Crown Jewels. The Crown Jewels passed to Queen Elena in 1900, who was pictured wearing a configuration of the Diamond Necklace, composed of swags and pendants on the front of the necklace, on several occasions in the first few years of King Victor Emmanuel III’s Reign, paired with her Emerald Tiara and Queen Margherita’s Savoy Knot Tiara.
