The Chinese Immigrants Act 1881 imposed a £10 poll tax on all Chinese immigrants to NZ. It also imposed a tonnage restriction of one Chinese person to every 10 tons of cargo. An amendment to the Act in 1888 changed the tonnage to one person per 100 tons of cargo. In 1896 the Act was again amended to raise the poll-tax from £10 to £100.

The poll tax was waived by the Minister of Customs from 1934 although the Act was not repealed until 1944.

The certificates of entry butts in this series were prescribed under Section 7 of the Chinese Immigrants Act 1881, its subsequent amendments and Section 33 of the Immigration Restriction Act 1908. The butts show the amount of poll tax each Chinese immigrant was required to pay.

The volumes of certificates of entry held by Archives New Zealand cover the period 22 May 1888 to 16 Dec 1930. The certificate butts give the following information:

- Name - Where born - Apparent age - Former place of residence - Ship arrived by and where from - Fingerprints (on certain volumes from 1904 onwards) - Photographs, for most people, from 1921 onwards
