English: The Parliament of India (Hindi संसद Sansad) is the supreme bicameral legislative body of the federal government of the Republic of India. It consists of the office of President of India, with an upper house, the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and a lower house, the Lok Sabha (Council of People). The two Houses meet in separate chambers in the Parliament House, New Delhi. The Members of either house are commonly referred to as Members of Parliament or "MP". The MPs of Lok Sabha are elected by direct election and the members of the State Legislative Assemblies elect the MPs of Rajya Sabha. The Parliament comprises 790 MPs, who serve the largest democratic electorate in the world and the largest trans-national democratic electorate (714 million eligible voters in 2009).
