Category:Nugent Block and Considine Block (Seattle)

The Nugent Block, originally known as the Nugent & Champeaux Block and also variously known as the Considine Block and the Oregon Hotel, is located at the Northwest corner of 3rd Avenue South and South Washington Street. Designed by Stephen J. Meany, it was built in 1890 for Capt. James Nugent and wine merchant Ephraim Champeaux. It was home to cheap hotels and seedy businesses throughout most of its history. Suffering structural deficiencies since its construction (a rear wall would collapse before the building was even completed), the top 2 floors were condemned and removed by the early 1940s, only years before the 1949 Olympia Earthquake would reek havoc on the neighborhood.
