English: Monument in memory of Michael Dwyer, his associate Sam McAllister, and other participants in the insurrection of 1798 at the Market Square of Baltinglass, sculpted by George Smyth of Dublin, grandson of John Smyth, and unveiled on 8 May 1904 by Father P. F. Kavanagh OSF, Limerick. Quote from the description published in the Nationalist and Leinster Times: “The monument represents a wounded insurgent of undaunted bearing standing on a pedestal. His right arm, wounded, rests in a sling, and his uninjured left hand grasps a musket. The steps of the pedestal are of Ballyknocken granite, and the pedestal itself is carved from Sicilian marble.” The pedestal has marble tablets with inscriptions in Irish and English. The English inscription as trancribed by the Nationalist and Leinster Times: “To commemorate the heroism and sacrifices of Michael Dwyer and his faithful comrade, Sam MacAllister, and also to perpetuate the memory of those who participated in the insurrectionary movements of 1798, 1803, 1848, and 1867, this monument has been erected by the people of Wicklow County. God save Ireland, 1904.” (See Paula Murphy, Nineteenth-Century Irish Sculpture – Native Genius Reaffirmed, p. 243; Rita Larkin, Smyth, John (1776–l840), in: Sculpture 1600–2000 (Art and Architecture of Ireland, Volume III), p. 325; DIA record; Dwyer & McAllister Memorial, in: Leinster Leader, 14 May 1904, p. 6; The Dwyer and McAllister Monument, in: Nationalist and Leinster Times, 14 May 1904, p. 5; the sculptor George Smyth died on 26 May 1927 according to notices in the Evening Harald, 27 May 1927, p. 1., and Irish Times, 27 May 1927, p. 1.)
