English: Mayer et Pierson, also known as Mayer & Pierson, a business partnership of French photographer Pierre-Louis Pierson with brothers Léopold Ernest Mayer (d. 1895) and Louis Frédéric Mayer (d. 1913) that was established in 1855. At that time Pierson was a well-known Paris photographer and the Mayers were named Photographers of His Majesty the Emperor by Napoleon III in 1854. Pierson and the Mayers started to distribute their images under the brand Mayer et Pierson, and became the leading society photographers in France and beyond. They photographed European royalty, aristocracy, and other celebrities of the time. The trio exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and in 1862 receiving numerous awards. In 1862, after the Mayer and Pierson law suit against their rival firms Thiebault and Betbéder and Schwalbé, the French government recognized photography as an art under French copyright law establishing a legal precedent.
