English: John Stoneacre Ellis (1828–1896), American collector of arms and armor. In 1896, his collection, probably acquired during his travels in Europe in 1875–1876, was gifted to the Metropolitan Art Museum. It was among the earliest collections of arms and armor in America. Ellis was an army officer in California, fought with his brothers Samuel Claudius Ellis, and Augustus Van Horne Ellis for the North in the Civil War, and later settled in Westchester County, New York.
