English: Onthank's 1861 oil portrait of John Brown was painted two years after his execution. It was donated to the Boston Athenaeum by a group of supporters in 1863.
According to the description on the wall, "Onthank projected the negative of a photograph of brown onto the canvas to aid his depiction. Onthank then consulted Brown's family .... to ensure it was a truthful likeness."
