English: Giacomo Mascardi (1567-1634), Italian printer active in Rome collaborating with with Domenico Basa of the Tipografia Apostolica Vaticana, the Typographia Orientale Medicea, and with Stefano Paolini, several of whose publications Mascardi republished. He became renowned posthumously for his relationship with the Accademia dei Lincei and particularly for his role in printing the works of Galileo Galilei. The first book known to be issued in his name appeared in 1606. He was particularly active in the field of medicine and the new experimental sciences. By 1622 his shop was located at the via del Piè di Marmo where he was active also as a bookseller, from there he moved to the Piazza Sciarra, and then finally to a location in front of the church of S. Marcello, where the shop of Bartolommeo Zanetti had been (and where the shop of Bouchard & Gravier would be in the 18th century). His nephew, Vitale Mascardi, continued to run the printshop under the family name after Mascardi's death. Giacomo was the printer of the section on Mexican animals by J. Faber in the Accademia dei Lincei's most famous publication, the Rerum medicarum novae Hispaniae thesaurus, (Tesoro Messicano), the whole of which was finally published by Vitale Mascardin in 1651. Under Giacomo's leadership the Mascardi shop produced 471 books, many of them illustrated; about a quarter of its production contained images of some kind. Among them the Antiquae Urbis splendor of Giacomo Lauro (1614); Sommario delle vite de gl'imperatori romani (1621) and two later editions of the bleeding manual by Pietro Paolo Magni, in 1613 and 1626. His work with the members of the Accademia dei Lincei included, by Galileo, the Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari (1613), and Il saggiatore (1623), Federico Cesi's Apiarium (1625), Francesco Stelluti's Il Persio tradotto (1630). He was also the publisher of De aeris transmutationibus by G.B. Della Porta (1614), and Orazio Grassi's "De tribus cometis" (1619). Besides these, he published several festival books, and an edition of the ever-popular Roman guidebook, Le cose merauigliose dell'alma cittă di Roma in 1609 with Mauritio Bona, as well as the Annales ecclesiastici auctore Caesare Baronio Sorano ex congregatione oratori (1612). In 1616 he reprinted one of the more ambitious antiquarian productions of the workshop of Francesco Zanetti' (in association with Bartolomeo Tosi), the Historia utriusque belli Dacici a Traiano Caesare, in 1616.
