Fishbelly rail was an early form of rail for railways, made from short sections of cast iron between stone block sleepers. It was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons, mostly because of brittleness in the cast-iron rails, but also because of the difficulty of keeping the separate sleeper blocks correctly space to maintain gauge.
