Français : Daniele da Volterra réalisa vers 1550-1555 pour Giovanni della Casa, lettré florentin qui écrivait un traité sur la peinture, un modèle en terre cuite (perdu) et cette peinture à deux faces sur ardoise représentant tous les deux le combat de David et Goliath (I. Rois, 17, 48-51). La comparaison des deux œuvres devait permettre de comprendre les mérites respectifs de la sculpture et de la peinture, un des thèmes majeurs de la théorie artistique du XVIe siècle. L'œuvre fut offerte à Louis XIV en 1715 par Nicolò del Giudice, clerc de la Chambre apostolique, avec un nouveau piédestal en bois doré permettant de faire tourner la peinture.
