This category is for twisted pair cables with T568A and/or T568B using modular connector 8P8C ("RJ-45") - or equipment using these cables. The cables are mostly used for - and are designed for wired ethernet communication. (The 8P8C connectors used are not RJ-45 - see the references)

The termination standard are called T568A or T568B (from ANSI/TIA-568):

  • Both ends has T568A terminations. (through cable - mostly used in USA, 1+2 green pair, 3+6 orange pair)
  • Both ends has T568B terminations. (through cable - mostly used in Europe, 1+2 orange pair, 3+6 green pair)
  • One end has T568A and the other end has T568B termination. Cross-over cable - seldom used today 2020 because most equipment has Auto MDI-X.

The cable can be unshielded (UTP) or shielded (STP, FTP). The cables can have one of the specifications; category 3, 5, 5e, 6 or 6a.

Wires used:

  • 1,2,3,6: Category 3
  • 1-8: Category 5, 5e, 6 or 6a
