What is the relationship between a ban by the ‘Imperial Majesty’ to print books with ‘heresy’, dated 1544, a 17th century poem for the wedding of Johan de Witt – the son of the murdered Johan de Witt – with Wilhemina de Witt, and a map apparently found in the coach of Napoleon, plundered in 1815 during the Battle of Waterloo?

In terms of contents they have little in common but when it comes to form they do: all three of them have been printed on a single sheet of paper with the print on just one side, so-called broadsheets of broadsides. The National Library of the Netherlands (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, KB) regards the broadsheets as a single collection and has archived them together. Broadsheet prints are fragile. They are loose sheets of paper, many of which were lost; usually as a result of the way in which they were used – as placards.

Content[edit]

This digital collection consists of circa 30.000 broadsheets that provide insight into the Dutch culture from the seventeenth century onwards. The collection includes government publications or proclamations that give an impression of the government interference at the time, and caricatures showing how people viewed Louis XIV, for example. The material can be divided into three categories:

Government publications
Proclamations and ordinances, i.e. laws, regulations and rules issued by Dutch local, provincial and national authorities. These government publications were often printed on one side of a single sheet of paper as a placard. In addition, they were published as small, handy booklets. Of the hundreds of thousands of placards that must have been published until the early nineteenth century, the KB has approximately 30,000 in its collection, of which about half are broadsheets. In the 1930s, the material was described in a printed catalogue. The details contained in this catalogue have been added to the images. Rules on ‘horn beasts’, beer, playing cards or ‘clap money’; they can all be found in the Memory.

Occasional poetry
Poems written and printed for a particular occasion: from births, weddings, promotions or birthdays to miraculous healings, an accession to office or the death of a public figure. The KB owns almost 4,000 occasional poems, of which approximately 500 were published as broadsheet.

Various materials
Geographic maps, engravings and lithographs – whether or not part of a book – with town plans, portraits and images of buildings and animals. This is visually very attractive material on all sorts of subject matter: it includes, for example, a representation of The total solar eclipse of 28 July 1851, but also an Allegorical scene, of the long-awaited and happy birth of the Hereditary Prince of Orange-Nassau dated 1748 and a representation of the Gravestone for Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette dated 1796.

Origin[edit]

The origin of most of the broadsheets is unknown. The placards have been part of the KB collection since the 19th century. The collection of various separate broadsheets has been built up over the years. The basis of the occasional poetry collection was established in 1866 with the purchase of 2,000 items. In 1972, this collection was expanded extensively with the purchase of the Halwasse collection. The broadsheet collection is growing continually through acquisitions and donations.

Limited to the public domain, pre 1900[edit]

Due to copyrights only xxx from the total of pm 30.000 broadsheets from the KB collection are available here on Commons. The sheets from before 1st January 1900 (1-1-1900) have been uploaded and can be fairly safely assumed to be in the public domain.
