Ballard's City Hall, designed by Thomas G. Bird, was built in 1899 and served that purpose until 1907 when Ballard was annexed to Seattle. It thereafter served as a police station and later health department offices. Though surviving the 1949 earthquake, the bell tower was removed in 1953 after bricks began to fall to the street. After sustaining further damage from the April 29, 1965 earthquake the building was condemned and demolished amidst a public outcry after no one came forward to make the repairs that could have saved it.
