The Avery family of western North Carolina was prominent economically and politically. Family members included: Waightstill Avery (1741-1821) drew up the first North Carolina constitution and was the state's first attorney general. His descendants: Isaac Thomas Avery (1785-1864), William Waightstill Avery (1816-1864), Clarke Moulton Avery (1819-1864), Thomas Lenoir Avery (1821-1852), Isaac Erwin Avery (1828-1863), Alphonso Calhoun Avery (1835-1913), and Willoughby Francis Avery (1843-1876) Avery Family of North Carolina Papers.
