'Armada' chests, a name applied to heavily reinforced strongboxes around the sixteenth century. A wooden chest is wrapped in iron strapping. Inside the entire lid is filled with a lock mechanism. Despite the repeated tales that these were acquired from shipwrecks after the Spanish Armada, there is little to support this.
