Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Mokey Mouse.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi, ...in fact, the publisher is already mentioned in the "source" tag -.- — danyele 15:49, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Danyele: Source tags are usually where you insert the specific sticker collection the uploaded sticker is from or the url of the specific scan. For example, (File:Albert Poli Angers.png) still names Panini as the author despite his sticker originating from the Calciatori 1971/72 Sticker Album. Panini being credited as the author of their own stickers remains consistent with other Panini stickers uploaded in Commons. SuperSkaterDude45 (talk) 17:52, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Colin Bell México 70.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- May I recommend this read: Guide to appealing blocks. It's written for English Wikipedia but applies here.
- Your answer cherry-picked the one image that might be public domain, and only if it was photographed in Italy (which it probably wasn't). You uploaded a dozen other images with clearly false licenses. You have two or three dozen warnings on this page for other sloppy uploads. You've had 25 deleted images. Can you try to explain any of that? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:48, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Magog the Ogre: So I will begin this by saying that I do acknowledge that when beginning to upload files in relation to football, I was unaware that Commons followed URAA dates over the upload dates of files as well as some other instances of flat out not doing enough digging into the authors of certain images and once again, I do take responsibility for uploading faulty uploads. That being said, there are cases of people filing warnings for literally no reason as is the case with File:Estadio Carlos Dittborn 1962 (2).jpg where despite the source being from a Chilean website as well as being uploaded around the time of the 1962 FIFA World Cup (before the September 16, 1962 date mind you), it was deleted without question. You have also mostly tried to cite the lack of a PD license within Mexico despite anonymous works being considered to be in the public domain and once again taking the Italy squad image as an example, the closest thing I could find to an explicit source comes from this Associated Press article where no specific author is credited. Even worse, the Mexican squad image has literally no author as the closest thing I could find was this where once again, no author is credited. The lack of authorship also makes some images in the public domain in Uruguay, Sweden and Czechoslovakia. Israel also has a 51-year copyright duration for works made prior to 2008. I'm not sure what effect the whole Mexican anonymous copyright law has on the URAA but considering these images were likely taken in Mexico with other images such as the El Salvador and Bulgaria images having no authors attached (as well as no non-user generated sources to determine authorship).
- TDLR: My appeal isn't meant to justify every single one of my uploads as there has undeniably been cases where I was deliberately rushing to upload files on Commons without being careful or just taking a quick glance at a certain image and their country and ignoring that files must also be public domain in the United States, and I do take full responsibility for those uploads. I'll be more cautious when uploading files in the future due to now having more experience and knowledge when it comes to international copyright and URAA application within Commons. - OK, I've unblocked, based on the fact this was a good faith reading, not just sloppiness.
- A few notes:
- Images need to be marked with their source country. If the image was first published and taken in Mexico, the PD-Mexico template is mandatory.
- Images need to be marked with a US license template. This is Commons policy, although one that is unpopular and less often enforced.
- If you are going to add PD-Mexico for a recent anonymous work, I highly suggest you write a special note in the permission field.
- Anonymous works need to actually be anonymous. People will scan things and put them on the internet without attribution, but the original might still have the attribution.
- I'm not an expert, but I suspect these are copyrightable by whichever organization commissioned the photographs (work for hire or direct employment).
- "Public domain until the author comes forward" is an iffy ground for free works. The whole reason behind Commons is that our content should be freely reusable. I suspect the community would not approve uploading a work which could fall back into copyright.
