Bulgaria legend and California Gold Rush map

[edit]

Do you have the source file for File:Bulgaria landcover legend.png? If the legend were instead created with Template:Legend, it would be translatable. For an example, see w:List_of_minimum_wages_by_country. If that option takes up too much space on the page, an alternative would be to re-upload as SVG, which would also be translatable but slightly more difficult to do so. Having the source file with editable text would make either of these options much easier to accomplish.

I've also reverted File:California Gold Rush relief map 2.jpg, as the new version is available separately at File:CaliforniaGoldRush.png. See Commons:Overwriting_existing_files for why. I updated the link on the California Gold Rush page to use your newer map, so there shouldn't be any visible change from that end.

In the future, when improving maps, it is generally better to upload the new, improved version with a new filename rather than overwriting the old map, and then link to the new map on the wiki page.

Comment I don't have them, but I can talk to the people who made the maps and try to get them. I'll also be sure to start grabbing SVGs from people when they send me maps. Thanks for the tips on the maps! So when I get the bulgaria map, should I upload it again or overwrite the original I uploaded?

If you're uploading an SVG of the legend, I think it's best to do a new upload, because it will be a different filetype. Overwriting is good when you're making minor corrections and it's the same filetype—fixing a spelling error or moving a label.
As far as getting SVGs from authors, definitely good for all-vector maps. I'm a little unclear myself whether they're appropriate when you have mostly vector data plus a hillshade, and PNG is better for all- or mostly-raster data.
