Bird ID?

Hello Walt. May I please ask you to ID the bird I added the note for? File:Coburg Island in Jones Sound .jpg. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:46, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

It appears to be Uria aalge. User:MPF is more expert than I. Walter Siegmund (talk) 18:07, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Thank you. I wanted to ask MPF, but I noticed they were not around for more than a month now. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:17, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Zoom

The zoom is good, thanks -- another tool we have that most of us don't know about! Maybe we should have Featured-Tool-of-the-Week to introduce us to them. Of course zooming makes it much easier to see the stitching artifacts -- I did it by hand before I knew there were auto-stitch programs.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 21:23, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm glad you liked zoom. I saw it on one of the talk pages. Featured-Tool-of-the-Week is a good idea. It might go at the top of the FPC page. It was some time before Slaunger brought Hugin to my attention. Before that, I used applications bundled with cameras with indifferent results. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 21:42, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Comments  Comment It's tilted --Pudelek 10:47, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Comment Corrected tilt. Thank you. Wsiegmund 21:10, 8 November 2010 (UTC) CommentThis is a beautiful composition. As feedback, it looks very flat. I would suggest setting the correct white and black points using the "Curves" tool in Photoshop (or similar) to increase the contrast and make the colors more natural. You can check on the histogram's corners (more on the shadows than on the highlights) that the levels are not correctly set.--Murdockcrc 21:14, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
I'd say fair enough. Not bleedingly sharp but you can't have that from this distance, and you need the distance to have this photograph. Rama 13:53, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Is in your mind "Commons" a part of English Wikipedia ?

Hello WalterSiegmund.
Merci d'y penser.
Bien cordialement à vous, --Jebulon (talk) 17:51, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Wsiegmund.
this is an attempt of a bad english translation, the original and only legal version is above in french language
Sorry if my question is provocative (and I know it is !)
I noticed that you used recently, three times, an english-WP reference for calling for respect and assuming good faith. You were right, but as french native speaker, I almost never use English Wikipedia (French WP is good too...), and don't know nothing about the enWP rules. "Commons" is (and must stay, IMO) a multilingual project, and certainly not a "colony" of english WP. Using EnWP references in "Commons" looks irrelevant to me
I think that "Commons" has its own behavior rules, it is the case in the FPC guidelines page for instance.
May I please ask you, as an Administrator of "Commons", to remember this, and use only "Commons" references ?
Please note that this message is not a personnal attack at all !!
Thank you very much for your kind attention, best regards from Paris (France)
--Jebulon (talk) 17:51, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jebulon; Thank you for taking time to write in both French and English. That is very kind. Commons has Policies and guidelines, but they are limited. To quote Commons:Editor's_index_to_Commons, "English Wikipedia pages are not treated as formal policy on Commons, but may nevertheless serve as a helpful guide." I've been linking to English Wikipedia policies and guidelines because many users do understand some English and for those who do not, the Interwiki links (at the bottom of the left column in the default skin) link to the equivalent policies in other languages, e.g., fr:Wikipédia:Pas_d'attaque_personnelle. But, there is no reason not to include the direct link to the policy in the user's own language, when possible. I will continue to provide the English link, because English is the most widely understood language and it is important that other users be able to understand discussions. But, that doesn't mean that I think "Commons" is a part of English Wikipedia. One of its virtues is its multilingual character.
(www.online-translator.com). Bien cordialement à vous, Walter Siegmund (talk) 21:42, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Bird ID?

Hi Walt, could you please help me to ID the bird File:Ocean beach at low tide against the sun.jpg? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 20:22, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Geocoding would be helpful, but assuming California, it is likely Limosa sp., based on the upturned bill and the length of the bill as compared with the head. Limosa fedoa is the only common species of this genus on the Pacific coast from Washington to California. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 20:46, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Comment on Featured picture candidates

Hi Walt, I have never said it was silly to dispute the rules. Of course it is not silly at all. Some rules could and should be disputed. I only said that the current rules were silly enough already, and the ones that jebulon was trying to enforce by opposing the images were even sillier. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 04:47, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

You are right. I'm sorry. But, you can make your point without calling his rules silly. That is your opinion, but other reviewers may agree with Jubulon. I think it is better to remind Jubulon of ru:Википедия:Не доводите до абсурда and I have done so. Walter Siegmund (talk) 05:13, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Hello. I'm here ! The only reason to oppose an image should be am image itself. I think it is partially wrong. I may oppose an image (better: a nomination, ok), if it is against the rule of "only two active nominations", for instance. My opinion is that "edit" or "alternative" versions are a violation against this rule. It is (seems to be) a minority opinion (now), but not a silly opinion. When two pictures of the same image are on the FPC page, I'm really lost very quickly (non chronological discussions, lot of blue links, other pictures thumbnails, references to previous nominations or debates etc...) and I pray for more simplicity. You know both what I think here: When I put a picture on FPC page, I offer you all what I think it is the best I can do, because the project, the page and the reviewers deserve this. With my own sensitivity, with mistakes, with pride, with humility. You all give your opinion, with your own sensitivity too, fair or unfair, "right" or "wrong" (in nominator's opinion), and let's wait ... The only way I think we must have before the end of the process is withdrawing, except discussion (but not duplicate the image), even if minor adjustments could be acceptable on the original nomination. If not featured at the end, then rework, and retry. But you know that. I agree that maybe opposing the image is not the best way to oppose the rule. But it is not a way to enforce a sillier rule. About this word "rule": maybe I'll try soon a better translation of the FPC guidelines in french, because I noticed that it lacks of details. What is clear in english is not so clear in french, especially about these "edit" versions and the law . (That's why I reacted, too). But If I can do that in french, I don't understand russian. What is "absurda" ? Best wishes for you two, and sorry for intrusion.--Jebulon (talk) 09:53, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi Jebulon; Follow the link (above) and search for "Français". That will lead you to fr:Wikipédia:Ne pas désorganiser Wikipédia pour une argumentation personnelle. It is a good idea to try a better translation of the FPC guidelines in French. Also, it is good to try to make the English words easier to understand. Thank you for your work here. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 03:03, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
That's what I was afraid of : again a link to the English Wikipedia rules in Commons... Clin.Oh, by the way, if I 'm not wrong, it is the day to say to you both "Happy Thanksgiving" !!--Jebulon (talk) 10:01, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your wishes. Do you have a harvest festival? I didn't find one in fr:Fête_de_la_récolte. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 20:46, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
No, Nothing like your "Thanksgiving", absolutely unknown in France--Jebulon (talk) 22:14, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I think that some of the people who are attending our feast will find that interesting. Thank you. Walter Siegmund (talk) 22:28, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Happy Thanksgiving from me too. We have nothing of this kind either in Denmark. Enjoy your feast. What's on the menu? Turkey? --Slaunger (talk) 22:37, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I can't say that I've ever received Thankgiving wishes before from Europe, much less from both France and Denmark. We and our friends do not celebrate the holiday exactly the way of our fellows. Three of our friends live in Corvallis. Since it is difficult to travel on the day before Thanksgiving, they drove here this morning. Consequently, we plan a modest dinner tonight. This year, the theme is vegetarian Greek. I'm making a Greek salad. Our feast is tomorrow afternoon. It will include roasted Meleagris gallopavo, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes as well as non-traditional items like roasted Brussel sprouts and mushroom pie. Thank you for the good wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 23:12, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

birds ID again

Hi Walt, an editor raised concern about wrong ID I made. If you are not sure yourself, maybe you could ask MPF? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:35, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Sanderlings are more common. I'll look into it later today. Walter Siegmund (talk) 19:27, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
I would say Calidris alba. The bill is too long for Charadrius alexandrinus, the side patches are too pale, and the legs are black rather than grey. Walter Siegmund (talk) 21:34, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, Walt. Then maybe you could change the name of the file accordingly? Regards.--Mbz1 (talk) 00:05, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
MPF confirms Sanderling by means of E-mail; "definitely Sanderling (Calidris alba)! Snowy Plover has a shorter bill and a grey-brown half-collar, and also a very different stance". Walter Siegmund (talk) 08:39, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
