First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Hi, these images have wrong ID. This is Viburnum plicatum. H. sargentiana (now H. aspera subsp. sargentiana) is very different. Please change their names. epibase 16:17, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. The plant has been sold to us 14 years ago as Hydrangea sargentiana. Indeed it may be not that, but I think it is a hydrangea and certainly not Viburnum plicatum. See for example the images in the catalog on http://www.esveld.nl/htmldia/v/viplic.htm
The image I found for Hydrangea aspera sargentiana shows pink coloured flowers, see http://www.esveld.nl/htmldia/h/hysarg.htm The flowers of the plant in our garden are pure white. The plant remains quite low, less than 150 cm

Spiraea thunbergii

I found your comment at my talk page today, I'm sorry for no answer so long. The picture was taken at a river side park. The plant is often planted in parks in Japan, and looks similer to the picture. There are several varieties(subspecies) of Spiraea thunbergii, so some varieties may look different.

I'm not an expert about plants, and not sure the accurate variety of the plant I took, but it seems Spiraea thunbergii ( Spiraea thunbergii Siebold ex Blume ?).

Yes you are right I know the fellow who added 1000's of species categories matching the gallery species and yes it was annoying, It is fruitless to change all that one page at a time so I will limit my edites to smaller things, I hadn't thought about woriking on the latin names but thanks for the suggestion and it looks like I forgot to sign in User WayneRay

Niet direct aan het experimenteren. Is {{duplicate|Nieuwenaam.ext}} inderdaad het eenvoudigste? Het ging er om de omschrijving van Sorbaria kirilowii te veranderen in Sorbaria sorbifolia en tevens de filenaam overeenkomstig te veranderen. Ik gebruikte de volgende twee stappen: 1. de file opnieuw uploaden met de juiste filenaam en tevens de juiste beschrijving geven. 2. de oude files (na het verwijderen van de links in galleries) voor verwijdering opgeven.

Het gaat dus m.i. niet om het verwijderen van een duplicaat. Groeten, --Wouter 11:57, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Mooi werk

Dag Wouter, ik zie hier een grote stroom van mooi werk toekomen. Ik heb een aantal van de dubbele categoriën terug gezet omdat het weinig zin heeft in één enkele categorie dimensie (geografisch in dit geval) het zelfde beeld op verschillende niveaus aan te houden. De bedoeling van diepere categorien is om de bovenliggende cleaner en overzichterlijke te hebben. Als je op tocht ben, weet dat er op de nl wiki heel wat mensen blij zullen zijn met foto's van stations. Vriendelijke groet. --Foroa 06:46, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

En voor ik het vergeet; vermits je regelmatig serietjes upload zou je flink wat tijd kunnen winnen met het commonist programma. Voor mij is het in elk geval een goede tijdswinst. --Foroa 07:26, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Bedankt voor de reactie. Met de dubbele categoriën heb je gelijk alhoewel ik soms toch een dubbele gebruik opdat een zoeker het makkelijker kan terugvinden. Bijvoorbeeld bij http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Kasteel_van_Horst_A.jpg heb ik zowel Holsbeek als Sint-Pieters-Rode gebruikt. De toeristische dienst, het adres op de kaarten, etc. gebruiken allemaal de plaats Holsbeek, alhoewel het in theorie Sint-Pieters-Rode zou moeten zijn. Het programma commonist zal ik eens bekijken. Met categoriën moeten wij vooral niet te dogmatisch zijn. Er zijn ook veel domeinen/parochies/kastelen die op het ene grondgebied liggen en op een ander beheerd worden. In dat geval beter een cat te veel dan te weinig. Als ik een serietje kerkfoto's upload en die in een aparte cat zet, dan zet ik toch nog het leukste prentje in churches in Belgium en eentje onder de gemeente. Alhoewel dat dikwijls teruggedraaid wordt vind ik het wel belangrijk voor iemand die visueel zoekt een maximum aan zinnige aanknopingspunten te vinden. --Foroa 13:40, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Removing Categories

That's a good idea, so if a picture is characteristic/symbolic, i will categorize it in the genus category and the species category. Information about where the photo was taken

Couldnt you try to put that information into the {{Information}}-template, please? abf /talk to me/ 19:33, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment. In my opinion is the information template not the right place. In the past I sometimes included it in the description.
When uploading an image the template gives the field "additional information". The explanation mentions that there geocoding and where the photo has been taken can be given. That is the place where I do it now. The present template has the advantage that the License info has been moved downwards so that the info of for example "This photo has been taken in Belgium" is more visible.
It also depends on the subject. Compare for example Image:Harderwijk_grote_kerk_B.jpg and Image:Nandina_domestica_A.jpg. In the last case there is still the "thick" Permission field so that the info about where the photo was taken is somewhat lost. Putting it in the description is not very useful. A optional separate box below description and before source would be better. May be you can rise the point in the Village pump. --Wouter (talk) 20:44, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Bij uw afbeelding : Image:Postzegel NL 1937 nr296-299.jpg staat: Copyright verlopen, auteur meer dan 70 jaar dood. Echter ik zie in de catalogus dat de nrs. 296 en 299 door S.L (Sem) Hartz zijn gemaakt, en deze is in 1995 overleden (volgens nl wikipedia). nb:Sem Hartz is ook de ontwerper van Image:Postzegel 1936 zomer.jpg Basvb (talk) 15:13, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Dag Basvb, Destijds heb ik uitgebreid naar gezocht hoe de situatie is. Een uitleg staat op http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Beleid_voor_gebruik_van_media/Postzegels Het komt er op neer dat TNT Post (vroeger PTT) beschikt over de exclusieve exploitatierechten met betrekking tot postzegels. Als -zoals bij de postzegels van TNT Post het geval is- een rechtspersoon als maker aangemerkt wordt, wordt de beschermingstermijn van 70 jaar berekend aan de hand van de eerst rechtmatige openbaarmaking van de postzegel. Na 1 januari 1989 is de situatie wat anders geworden. Naar mijn idee geldt in ieder geval voor oude postzegels dat het copyright is verlopen 70 jaar nadat de postzegel is uitgegeven. --Wouter (talk) 21:55, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Pocahontas, and Other Poems

I was surprised to see, as you notified my on my Wikipedia User Page that File:Pocahontas, and Other Poems.djvu did not have any categorization or other info. I have to wonder if perhaps it was uploaded automatically from Wikisource to Commons. Probably not because it says it was edited by me, but I don't make a habit of uploading without info. Thanks. There has been a discussion about that see Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2008Dec#What_about_linking_to_a_category_in_Commons_for_djvu_files.3F. Apparently a bot puts these files in Commons without any further information. May be they changed it now. I was looking at Category:Media_needing_categories to add categories to files that consider as important or ask the owner to do that. That was how I found your file. In my opinion is what you mentioned "the rights of photographs of buildings" not right. Under local copyright law is mentioned: "The modern pieces of art cannot be the central motive of a commercially available photographs without permission of the artwork copyright holder." In the The Belgian copyright act in French is mentioned " Section 3. - (Dispositions particulières aux oeuvres d'art graphique ou plastique.)" and the article 11: "On entend par " oeuvre d'art originale ", les oeuvres d'art graphique ou plastique telles que les tableaux, les collages, les peintures, les dessins, les gravures, les estampes, les lithographies, les sculptures, les tapisseries, les céramiques, les verreries et les photographies, pour autant qu'il s'agisse de créations exécutées par l'artiste lui-même ou d'exemplaires considérés comme oeuvres d'art originales."
The Dutch version gives exactly the same info " Afdeling 3. - (Bijzondere bepalingen betreffende de werken van grafische of beeldende kunst.)" and "Onder " oorspronkelijk kunstwerk " wordt verstaan, een werk van grafische of beeldende kunst, zoals afbeeldingen, collages, schilderingen, tekeningen, gravures, prenten, lithografieën, beeldhouwwerk, tapisserieën, keramische werken, glaswerk en foto's, voorzover dit werk een schepping is van de kunstenaar zelf, of het gaat om een exemplaar dat als oorspronkelijk kunstwerk wordt aangemerkt.".

Hallo Wouter, omdat ik zag dat je de eerste bezoeker was van de pagina: Sculpture images without artist name keek ik even op je overlegpagina en zie bovenstaande discussie. Als dit gaat over gebouwen/beeldhouwwerken etc. in de openbare ruimte dan kun je verwijzen naar de in Ned. geldende Freedom of Panorama. De tekst is na te lezen op Commons:Freedom of Panorama: Ned. is een z.g. FOP country, vandaar dat er zo verschrikkelijk veel afbeeldingen van beeldhouwwerken zijn opgeslagen onder Sculptures in the Netherlands. Hallo Gerardus. Bedankt voor je info. Met je opmerking over België ben ik het niet eens. Ik zou zelfs zeggen dat België wel een FOP land is met uitzondering van beeldende kunst. De COM:FOP#Belgium zegt "The modern pieces of art cannot be the central motive of a commercially available photographs without permission of the artwork copyright holder." Naar aanleiding van de delete nominaties heb ik de wet zelf eens goed nagelezen. De [Belgische wet] spreekt over “werken van grafische of beeldende kunst”. Gebouwen worden nergens vermeld. Hi Wounter: Thanks for the advise and sorry for the delay of my answer. I've been putting descriptions in categories for a while for the same reason as you and trying to normalize the descriptions of categories. I used This category is for multimedia files related to to show that you only must put multimedia files, and what is the country that belong. About to the use of template ARG, maybe i can use the subst command. I think, Patagonia is so generic than Argentina; Patagonia is a region in Argentina and Chile. What do you think if we put: ''This category is for multimedia files related to name of the river, in name of the province, name of the country?. Hallo Wouterhagens, nach dem gestrigen Volksentscheid wird heftig über das Thema Religionsfreiheit und die vier Minarette in der Schweiz diskutiert, aber ich finde nur von zweien ein Foto.
