Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Thanks for pointing this one out to me Ju. I have now added the license information. As you can see at the tracking page for the batch upload, Commons:Europeana/Europeana 1914-1918 batch upload, there were a few items which failed to include the license information when I was preparing the metadata. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Europeana 1914-1918.png[edit]

Hi,

The DR is closed so I want to point a few things out. Logo's are often not covered by licensing statements on websites. One of the reasons could be that licensing a logo under a cc-license can effect your "trademark-rights". Secondly, I don't agree that the file should have been speedy deleted but you can't blame the deleting admin when GLAM-people don't do their homework properly. This includes making sure that the copyright status of files is clear and this includes identifying accounts properly. This file violated Commons policy for more than a year. Dear Wittylama,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Europeana Fashion[edit]

As mentioned six months ago. These files were uploaded by a separate consortium within the context of a specific semi-independent project, now concluded, that used the Europeana brand. That project has now concluded and its work has been integrated into the whole of the 'main' Europeana. The result is of course that different materials coming from different places, with different input agreements/MoU's, appear in the same place with the same ostensible branding. The British Museum[edit]

Could you by any chance convince the Department of Coins and Medals of the British Museum to donate scans of their entire collection and their literature (books in the public domain and recent publications). Hi Donald Trung, I've not worked at/with the British Museum since 2010, so anyone I knew there would probably be in a different role now. I did try to get them to make photo donations of their objects but this was shot-down by the marketing department for all the usual reasons why museums are scared to release copyright in their digitisations of collection objects. Ohhh, that's really unfortunate, it's really sad that an institution created to preserve knowledge wants to water down its mission because of profitability. Honestly I'm trying to make Wikimedia Commons into "the biggest Chinese numismatics museum" so yeah, I kind of have a conflict with that. Anyhow thanks for the response and let's hope that they'll change their copyright © soon. Expiry of GWToolset user group memberships[edit]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

Sorry, I have now restored F.G. Frustratingly, I can't work out how to get https://www.mapchart.net/detworld.html to keep a 'pre filled' list, so, any alterations and additions require starting from scratch and adding all the other countries manually too - which is how I was able to overlook adding these two places in each of the previous updates (when I was only just trying to add Germany).
