First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Martin H. certainly I have done something wrong in uploading pictures, but before you say I stole the photo from the Facebook group called "Palmi" at least you could ask an explanation and I would have said that the group that I created and that those photos are mine and I I posted on Facebook! Knowing commons certainly done better than I have to delete them because fate loaded incorrectly ... but next time for education to avoid using the word "stolen" for a person who does not know ... do a better figure. I therefore remain locked indefinitely anyway? Thank you ...

Martin H certamente avrò sbagliato qualcosa nel caricare le foto, ma prima di dire che ho rubato le foto dal gruppo Facebook chiamato "Palmi" almeno potevi chiedermi spiegazioni e ti avrei detto che quel gruppo l'ho creato io e che quelle foto sono mie e le ho inserite io su Facebook! Conoscendo commons meglio di me avrai certamente fatto fato a cancellarle perchè caricate in modo errato...però per educazione la prossima volta evitare di usare la parola "stolen" per una persona che non conosci... farai una figura migliore. If you created the photos from that facebook group(s) yourself you must not upload them in downscaled size. The facebook software reduzes the filesize to 720px at the longer site, if you own the original photos you must not first download your own work from facebook. But thats what you did. See for example File:Anfiteatro di Palmi.jpg (log), your predecessor account was able to upload the full size version of 2,560 × 1,920px, you now only uploaded a 720px downscaled variant. The image is grabbed from the web. It not makes it any better if you take other peoples photo upload them (as you claim) to your facebook group, download them from facebook, upload them to Commons.
Besides some photos taken from facebook the vast majority was taken from other websites. You not give any explanation why you did that. And yes, thats stealing. --Martin H. (talk) 09:54, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Riguardo a questa discussione, stai dando corda a un ip (82....) che è un troll vandalico, a causa del quale le voci sul Meazza e l'Olimpico sono semiprotette, e che vandalizza regolarmente con due IP (vedi qui), con i quali discute e si dà ragione pure su Wikipedia, e qui con cui è stato bloccato su Wikidata. Ora che sono bloccato fino ad aprile cerca di fare il suo comodo ma non ha raccontato le edit war anche con gli admin che ha ingaggiato per cercare di infilare lo storico proprietati nel sinottico, quando nessuna voce in vetrina di stadio ce l'ha... chiedi a @Kirk39: o a @Gac: per delucidazioni. @Blackcat io ho semplicemente posto una domanda sulla opportunità della creazione di un modello di voce per gli impianti sportivi (con le opportune specificità che ogni struttura ha). Non ho "dato corda" perché non avevo la palla di vetro per sapere che l'IP avrebbe utilizzato una mia domanda rispondendomi su una questione tra te e lui e, inoltre, non ho nemmeno replicato sulle tematiche della vostra discussione.
