Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Image Tagging Image:M19_noao.jpg[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:M19_noao.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hi, NOAO do not allow unlimited commercial use of their photos. I'm afraid all those photos will have to be deleted. Thuresson 14:20, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 14:04, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Please do not remove deletion requests[edit]
Please do not remove deletion request tags from images before an administrator has closed the debate. If you do not agree that the image should be deleted, you can express your opinion on the deletion request page. You can find this page via a link in the deletion request tag or at Commons:Deletion requests. Thank you. Patstuart 00:59, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Pd-self[edit]
- Please note I am not questioning your good faith in making the uploads. However, I have already marked several for copyright violation deletion, marked others as lacking a source (for the NASA images, we'll probably need a URL), and some others are listed at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:M45 filip.jpg. Thanks. Patstuart 01:23, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Filip Lolić is owner of that webpage and he gave me full permission to use pictures from it. I can't see how is that copyright violation? —the preceding unsigned comment was added by Vedran V (talk • contribs)
- Hi Vedran. Thanks for responding. I think we will need to have a copy of that email; you might like to send a copy of it to the Wikipedia office as well. As is, in any case, you will wish to change the license to GFDL or , or whatever, depending on what he allowed. It isn't really pd-self at the moment. Hope this clarifies things. Patstuart 03:50, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- I really do encourage you to participate at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:M45 filip.jpg. Patstuart 04:00, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Please forward the permission e-mails to permissions-commons AT wikimedia DOT org. They will be archived in a system called OTRS, and the images will be tagged to indicate that an explicit CC-BY-3.0 has been received. Doing so helps avoid future misunderstandings. Thanks. File tagging File:M45_filip.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:M45_filip.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]
Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.
The images we would like you to check are:

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
