Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hej!

Jag skulle precis posta ett svar till ditt inlägg på COM:VP när jag hamnade i redigeringskonflikt med MiszaBot (talk · contribs), som arkiverade diskussionen. Dålig tajming! :) Här är det jag hade tänkt skriva:

I would advise against ignoring any such sign, not just specifically the one I linked to. I did not mean to imply that older signs are invalid. The statute governing protected areas doesn't contain any limitation on the duration of the designation of a protected area or any explicit mechanism for repealing such a designation. My reading of the law is that as long as you're outside the protected area itself, you should be fine, but that doesn't mean you won't get in some kind of trouble if, for example, you were to take photos of security checkpoints at an airport from just behind the sign. Not being guilty is not the same as not being suspected on reasonable enough grounds to be arrested, and that's probably inconvenient enough to avoid testing the limits. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:17, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Hedemora

Hej V-wolf! Jag ser att du skapat en ny kategori Category:Hedemora city som en underkategori till Category:Hedemora. Ett förslag från min sida är att i döpa om den nuvarande Category:Hedemora till Category:Hedemora Municipality och den nuvarande Category:Hedemora city till Category:Hedemora. På så sätt följer man någon sorts standard som har utvecklats för svenska kommuner. Se t ex Category:Eskilstuna Municipality som står för Eskilstuna kommun, och Category:Eskilstuna som avser tätorten. Hälsningar --Zejo (talk) 18:56, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Tips

Jag vet inte om du sett det men det finns några kategorier för utvalda Sverigebilder på Commons; Category:Featured pictures of Sweden och category: Quality images of Sweden. Re: Mushroom photo

I afraid not. Lately the FPC bar (especially for macro shots) is very high, and it is made harder by the fact that you don't have a dedicated macro lens. Not all the mushrooms in your picture are in focus. For larger DOF, use small f-stops (but don't go above f/16, images tend to have a 'smudged' look) and get further back. And I wouldn't call this an "amateur" picture (I haven't actually taken any FPs yet), and don't worry about bugging me - I quite enjoy responding to questions such as this. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 01:53, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

FPCs of ordinary subjects

Hi V-wolf, I didn't want to spam the FPC nomination further with comments about what in principle can become FP. I agree with you that most images, which are promoted are aesthetic depicting something "nice" and often extraordinary. Does that leave no room for more ordinary and valuable subjects? There are several examples in our FP archives that it is possible. Here are some I found quite fast

To get these subjects to FP status one "just" has to consider very carefully how to capture them in an interesting way with a good composition, good light, no distracting elements, and a careful consideration of the camera position. It is not easy, but a challenge. Don't give up trying. I bet a woodchopper machine in action could also be featured, and that you can do it, if you are persistent! --Slaunger (talk) 21:50, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, jag är inte så bra på Gimp, använder en halvgammal version av Photoshop själv (CS2), men i den finns det olika reglage för RGB-balans, som man dock bör vara försiktig med, eftersom det lätt blir för mycket åt andra hållet. Jag förstår fortfarande inte helt är jag rädd. Menar du att utrymmet mellan husen är svagt v-format (det verkar rimligt med tanke på att att husen har raka fasader och ligger där vägen gör en skarp sväng) eller att de lodräta linjerna inte är raka utan lutande. I så fall ser jag inte var nånstans. Ursäkta om jag ställer dumma frågor, men försöker bara förstå vad du menade så jag eventuellt kan åtgärda det.

Hej!

I kategorin Protected buildings in Dalarna County finns ett antal bilder som uppges föreställa byggnadsminnet "MORISKA GÅRDEN OCH LUSTGÅRDEN I GRAND HOTELL" (BBR 21300000014162). Jag tvivlar dock på att alla bilderna verkligen föreställer den skyddade delen av Grand Hotell i Falun. Grön är när någon har skrivit in parametern "promotion" (alltså att den personen anser den vara en kvalitetsbild), och tycker ingen annorlunda inom cirka två dygn (boten körs tidig eftermiddag svensk tid) blir bilden en QI. Röd är "decline", alltså motsatsen. Tycker man annorlunda än den första som granskat bilden skriver man in "discuss", då blir ramen gul och bilden flyttas ner till diskussionen längst ner. Hi! I don't believe an image needs to fit in a given format like 3:4 oder 16:9 or 3:2 or any else. I'm cropping my photos in a way so it looks (in my eyes) somehow harmonic. Cutting off empty or disturbing or unnecessary parts will do. Except for panoramics anything between 1:1 and 16:9 should be ok in most cases. I september genomför vi fototävlingen Wiki Loves Monuments igen.

I år har vi till den svenska deltävlingen lagt till ytterligare en kategori med objekt du kan fotografera, nämligen arbetslivsmuseum. Vi har även passat på att förtydliga instruktionerna för hur man deltar. För mer information se tävlingens hemsida.

Until April 2015, all accounts will become completed global ones. Then, stewards will be able to merge two or more global account upon their request. The usurpation of local accounts needs no intervention by you, it will be automatically done by the Wikimedia Foundation in order to make all user accounts completed global ones. As soon as both your accounts are like that (which can happen even before April 2015 as long as the local accounts requests a rename action before), you can drop me a message and I merge your accounts. Usurpation of local accounts is still possible till then, but usually be done following to m:Usurpation policy which does not apply for the commonswiki Vivo account (nor for the two remaining clashing Vivo accounts on dewiki and jawiki).
