Hello, Urutseg!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Blank template.svg[edit]

Hi, it would be really helpful if you released File:Blank template.svg under PD-self. I'm having trouble because I can't combine the template with LGPL images for example. This template is so widely derivatived, so it would really help. --Beao 16:57, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Small request[edit]

Hello Urutseg! I've noticed the great work you've done on File:Bollard pull real.svg, and there's another very similar image (part of a set) at File:Bollard pull idealized.jpg. Can you convert it to SVG with the same style? I'd appreciate it very much! Regards, -- Orionisttalk 12:39, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Something like that. In exchange, can you tell me what is that construction on the roof? just curious--Urutseg (talk) 14:06, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That was fast! That thing on the roof is the bridge, it is raised and has big windows all around to allow for 360-degree visibility, especially important for the kind of tasks done with tugboats. Thanks again! Regards, -- Orionisttalk 15:10, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Other small request[edit]

my attempt

Hi Urutseg, I tried to correct the illumination of this old-document by myself, but I'm pretty sure you can do it better. You can find the original dissimilar-illuminated file Here. I would be grateful if you decided to help. Cheers. --Flad 21:39, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The same you did to this document, because as you can see, the original document is highly illuminated in the left part, and I'm not sure if I fixed the image the better way. --Flad 10:33, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, it can't be done. You know, the matter is that white spot is completely, precisely white. it doesn't have any information that can be extracted. the only thing you can do with it without completely redrawing it, is to change color. For example to light pink. but that looks ugly. If somebody can take another photo of original, that would be the best solution--Urutseg 16:36, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You are right I see what you mean. thanks for your response. --Flad 20:30, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Umnik (talk) 21:01, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Korean map request[edit]

On File:South Korea physical map.svg, Dokdo(en:Liancourt Rocks) is hidden by the legend. Could you move the position? -- ChongDae (talk) 14:52, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have some requests.

  1. The aspect ratio is differ from the location maps. Could you fix it?
  2. Could you make the relief map for the whole korea? See File:Korea location map.svg.
  3. The martime border between South and North Korea is disputed. See File:Map of Korean maritime border.svg. Could you remove the martime border and display only a part as the location maps?
  4. In your maps, major rivers are not shown. Esp, Bukhan River(a major tributary of the Han River) and Geum River. See File:South Korea location map.svg.

Belarus flag[edit]

The color standards is at http://www.tnpa.by/ViewFileText.php?UrlRid=52178&UrlOnd=%D1%D2%C1%20911-2008 on page nine. The color stays the same as the pre-2012 flag (which was at Flag of Belarus.svg) but the design of the ornament is different in the sense it is stretched. Panorama work[edit]

Thanks for sorting my 'snaps' of w:Stockbridge library into panoramas.

I've another one, ... File:Central library, Edinburgh 001.jpg through to File:Central library, Edinburgh 015.jpg. I've taken multiple overlapping shots sho that—hopefully—the pesky pedestrians can be excluded. ;-) --Brian McNeil / talk 09:50, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey, i make some raw panorama for you to see how you should take pictures for it. Check this link. Green areas have no details because there is no photo for them, curved zigzag boundaries are frames of your individual photos. Now you should better understand why you have to take as much photo as you can for panorama. And futhermore, you should capture areas far enough from your object of interest even if you think they are not necessary. We need them to do a proper crop.--Urutseg (talk) 17:33, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the advice! Very useful. I'll make sure to take an awful lot of pics when next looking for a panorama shot. The good news is that I have now been granted permission to photograph inside Central Library. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:49, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, taken another shot at getting a decent set of pics for a panorama, listed on File:McDonald Road library, Edinburgh-007.jpg, running through to File:McDonald Road library, Edinburgh-031.jpg. And, made a 'start-class' article it might be usable on w:McDonald Road Library. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:08, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Category discussion warning

Category:Physical_maps_of_Ukraine has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
