Hello, Trojan2010!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Filetype[edit]

Hi, please pay attention to the extension you give in the filenames of the files you upload. You've uploaded three JPEGs so far, but gave all of them a PNG extension. I'm going to move them to the appropriate name, but it would save me some time if you would be more careful in the future. Thanks. –Tryphon 12:40, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I always upload in PNG, because a JPEG extension damages the engine. I know, it's a little bit, but I want to upload images in the best quality possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trojan2010 (talk • contribs) 20:35, 2010 January 24 (UTC)
I don't know what you mean by a JPEG extension damages the engine, but in any case, changing the extension at upload-time doesn't modify the file format: if you upload a JPEG with a PNG extension, the image remains exactly the same, it's a JPEG. You would have to convert your JPEGs manually before you upload them, with your favorite image editing program, but that wouldn't increase the quality either. So please, just upload you JPEGs as JPEGs, with a .jpg extension. –Tryphon 08:43, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
