CJK stroke order project[edit]

Hello,

File:殳.gif
See an explanation here. I tried to to draw it in 300px/300px and to use ImageMagic to get a good miniaturized result at the size of 100px/100px. But that don't work. The best result is with the good soft.

This is an huge work. How did you that ? Handly ? with a script ? I also have smile a little to see that you are in front of the sames limit that us : the quality of the image is not great. Several of our contributers had the same trouble. But I also see that the stroke order is good (many web animation have some near of 10% of mistakes).

For all this, I show you :

For the Stroke order issue: en:Stroke order (starting point, overview) ; 214 radicals (our summary) ; www.edu.tw - Taiwan Ministry of Education's 常用國字標準字體筆順手冊 (online authoritative book) will help you a lot.

To do nicer pics : please download this file and unzip it. There should be together the good soft that User Wikic use, and its "magic key". The nice animations are made with this software, while the our ugly ones are made with GIMP and alpha channel background.

More over, can you tell me how you did your animation ? (I suppose~you draw them handly, with Gimp ?)

After this, you have there all the best information that we have. I can be really more helpfull, and I will sadly have to turn off my computer next week to study my real-life exams >0<". You have there all that I can give to you.

Hi Yug, thanks for your interest. I actually wrote a Java Applet where you only have to draw the strokes once (and some "border" to avoid filling the whole character). This way I can create character animations and print-outs pretty quickly (I would guess less than three minutes for a ten stroke character). Can you try and install the java runtime environment on your computer? (see links at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Runtime_Environment), I would love to get feedback from you about the Applet, and hopefully I can make some improvements to make the animations nicer. Furthermore the applet generates files (animation, step-by-step picture for print-out) that you can then download and use as you wish.

Here is the directory with the animations (.gif) and the pictures (.png): http://gamedev.cs.colorado.edu/~strohman/chardraw/output/

O0O !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What ! You did it !!!!! Yug (talk) 08:39, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So, it's a Java Application[edit]

Actually, I dream of such Applet since 2005, when the project started. I exactly understand what you means while saying "[we] only have to draw the strokes once (and some "border" to avoid filling the whole character)". I haven't any programming abilities, and I have believed that was [almost] impossible to do[1]. But you did a such applet ! And I'm totally astonished by your results.

Where to go now
Quality to improve:
by Thomas Strohmann's Java application.
by Thomas Strohmann's Java application.
Your gifs haven't a good looking, but I hope this can be improve (with the soft I sent to you). The image should be larger: At least 300px/300px [2]
Ideas for your applet:
The graphist-contributor should be able to state he make a character specific to a country :[ cn | tr | ja ] (China ; specific to Traditional ; specific to Japan)
Basically, your applet should be set on [ cn ✓ ], the produced files will then be name such as : 字-order.gif.
If the graphist-contributor notice he work on a characters with stroke order specific to taiwan or Japan, he should be able to set on your applet [ tr ✓ ] producing files name such a 戈-torder.gif ; and for Japan [ ja ✓ ] producing 生-jorder.gif file.
Clarify your objectives
Our current GIF strategy is: Step 1: Wikic work on the 214 radicals in high and calligraphic quality, and showing the direction of each stroke. Step 2: we have to make at least 500, if possible 2.000 characters showing the stroke order, i.e. 身-sbs.gif (stroke-by-stroke, 300px).
If we can have a good quality, images such 火-order.gif (by waves, 300px) are welcome. It's depending of your Java applet possibilities.
Last things
Feel free to found and to impose better solution if you find better than us. ;]
My [old!?] computer already have difficulties to run Linux and is not strong enough to run Java runtime. But I will find a solution soon.
Seeing your animations and what you did, I'm under your orders, and your are the "Script Boss". In this task, feel free to ask and do all what is need in the good interest of this Script project.
Yug (talk) 15:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC) <sorry for my approximative english>[reply]
  1. The chinese wikipedian encouraged to build a script, and I answered that one of my friend and me had unsuccessfully tryed (in january 2007), and so, we had to continue handly.
  2. Actually, Wikic make animations in 300px/300px, under half-free license, upload to our free website : hanzi.homelinux.org.
By keeping the big 300px/300px only on our free website, we wanted to keep an 'comparative advantage' to raise further contributions toward commons, toward a Chinese-French free dictionary, and to host my university Chinese course that my teachers [sadly] don't want to share with Wikipedia GNU license, etc. But our website is sleeping. So we will probably upload the 300px animation to commons soon. The bad thing is that doing so : all Chinese websites will be able to get the 300px, and our hanzi.homelinux.org will lost its comparative advantage.
Anyway, in end 2007, all the gifs on commons will be 300px/300px.

300px[edit]

Hi Yug, thanks for your great feedback! I have put up a different version of the applet where you can draw 300x300 pictures:

http://gamedev.cs.colorado.edu/~strohman/chardraw300/character_drawing.html

The quality is still not as good as the one from the images you showed me. The reason for that I think is that the high-quality images are "smoothed" (they use different gray values at the edges and not just black and white). I will see if I can improve that. In the meantime people can already use the applet to create characters. One feature of my applet is that it calculates a text representation of the animation (just a long sequence of numbers). If we store the text representation of the 300x300 character animations we can use it later to automatically produce high-quality animated gifs.

ThomasStrohmann 04:54, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I tryed your applet yesterday, in my university, and I really LIKE and LOVE it.
I have "play" with your applet 30min yesterday, making all kind of tests to understand the rules. I tryed to make the character Fire, and Human, and I'm near to understand how to use your applet. I'm totaly astonished that it really just need 2 mins to do one character ! Stored as a data, the possibilities that those informations will be later apply on better background and make really nice animations is... great ! From this 'playtime' I also get some feedbacks for you.
Feedbacks
1/ How to cancel something ? One problem was that I was unable to cancel a mistake, especialy in the "red border line" (which I wanted to draw perfectly). I propose to you that clic-again on a red square with the right-mouse make the square turn back to grey. I also propose to you that "Crtl_Z" be active, and so, able to cancel any mistake. Just one of this solution is need.
2/ The "ADD" button is misleading. I don't understand clearly what is the use of this, and how to use it. In fact, it seem simply need to state the number of strokes, right ?
3/ I think your screen is already really clean, but we will have to improve it slowly to be "perfectly understand in 2 min and one test". I will work on this slowly.
4/ A link to an authoritative page explaining or showing the right Main China stroke order will be need. I will work on this slowly.
5/ I was unable to enter my name "Yug" and to submit file.(But the computer on which I made these tests in my university may have an old Java runtime).
I will try to give you more feedback, but I will enter this week end in my "yearly revision rush" to get my study graduation. Because of this, I will turn off my computer from April 1st to 15 may at least, and turn-on it only one day a week. My true life study are first. An other thing, this work of improvement will done on 3 or 6 month. But we have all the tools in our hand to do a great work.
--Yug (talk) 14:37, 30 March 2007 (UTC) <sorry for my english, but I think it's understandable. If you need clarifications, just ask me to explain again. >[reply]

Thanks for the Feedback Yug.

1/ (and 2), You draw one stroke at a time. If you make a mistake in the current stroke you can cancel the whole stroke by pressing the "Reset" button, to add the stroke permanently press the "Add" button (after adding a stroke, however, you can't change it anymore). You don't specify the number of strokes - you just draw one stroke, add it, draw the second stroke, add it, ..., until you are done.
5/ Your file was submitted, but under an "empty" name, look at these links below. From looking at the files I see now also the confusion about the Add button. So, when you are drawing a 4 stroke character, you have to press the Add button 4 times, once after each stroke. You draw the first stroke (and only that stroke), then press Add. After that you will see that the first stroke is painted in black and you can work on the other strokes (the remaining gray area of the character).

I agree that there should be a file documenting the tool, maybe even a video how to use it. If I have time (unfortunately work is pretty busy for me right now...) I can do this in the middle of the week.

ThomasStrohmann 05:48, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notice that we work only for Modern Chinese stroke order for the moment.

I did this character, in 300px, but impossible to submit it.

Some ideas :

  • Get a tutorial (did), and have a link to it , in your applet page such Tutorial.
  • Change "Add" button into a "Next" button.
  • Have a stroke order tutorial for the 214 radicals : The CJK team is working on this, but we go slowly. In June, after my exams, I wish to make the 214 radicals in your applet. Your gif are less beautiful than the CJK ones, but can show the standard PRC's stroke order really clearly.

One big trouble on the 300px applet : I'm unable to submit my file(s). This is the 3rd computer where I can't submit my file, and where I'm unable to enter my name. Have you set up some right ? I will try with the 100px applet now. --Yug (talk) 09:16, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, that's strange. Are you putting a space in your name? That could be a problem, because the name you enter is used as part of the filename for the animated gif, and filenames sometimes get messed up if there is a space in them ThomasStrohmann 03:27, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm don't use space : I'm totally forbiden to input anything such A, B or C. My cursor is not able to clic in the pseudo field, and all the computer that I used had the same trouble for the pseudo field (all these computors were Windows, may it be this ?). This trouble is on 300px applet and on the other too.
Otherwise all what ok, I drawed the 身 easily and quiclky.

Yug (talk) 12:06, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yug, even if you can't input a name you should be able to get the file you just submitted by going to the directory: http://bouldergamedev.com/~strohman/chardraw300/output/ and selecting the most recent files (if you have an "empty" name, the files will simply start with an underscore). As for the problem of not being able to input your name, it could be some issue of the Windows Language bar: if you input the character with the language set to Chinese, you could try and set the language immediately back to English, even before you hit the "OK" button. An alternative is to always leave the language as English and simply paste in the character from somewhere else. Thomas

New Tutorial[edit]

I put up a small flash tutorial using Wink. It is a Flash animation of around 3MB: http://gamedev.cs.colorado.edu/~strohman/chardraw300/tutorial.htm

Your tutorial is good and really clear. That great to see that you go toward like this. --Yug (talk) 09:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My exam to study : I leave the web[edit]

Hello again Thomas,
Since I have to study for my final Exam in both Chinese License and History License, I will turn off my computer.
This computer-break will apply from Sunday 8 march, and end on mid June. I will be back 2 or 3 hours a week, on Saturdays, to check all my web things. You can leave me a message here or on my (talk page), your project stay one of my top priority, but my true life is the first priority, so notice that the answer will only come on Saturday.

See you next time. Yug (talk) 12:06, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still here[edit]

Hello Thomas,

Being tyred to help on wikipedia and Commons, I will stop to contribute to keep more time for my personnal real life projects. I'm still really interested by your work, but I need to help myself first now. Please email me at hugo.lpzgmail.com to keep in touch.
