First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)
File:OC.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Discussion about legal threat[edit]

Please see Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#Legal_threat_by_User:The_undertow. Dcoetzee (talk) 10:13, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to this, if it were not for Dcoetzee stating specifically that he did not want you banned, I would have indefed you for this. If you wish to make legal threats, it is best you stop editing and speak to Wikimedia solely through lawyers.
I understand that this is not the first time you have threatened people with legal action on Wikimedia projects. Further, if you have legal threats, at least have the decency to make them without impugning the character of the person you are threatening, or making personal attacks.
If you have a problem you believe is a legal issue, talk to us through your lawyers. If however you continue to abuse people, by any means, you will find yourself swiftly blocked and your email user priviledges revoked. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:38, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If there was a list of things in this world that I didn't give a fuck about, I mean if I had to narrow it down to 5 things, you and being banned from commons would easily make it. The undertow (talk) 19:16, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm honoured, but please make an effort to be MELLOW. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:26, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That page made the list, too. It's like, the more you visit this page, the more I'm seriously going to have to rethink my list. The undertow (talk) 19:31, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked[edit]

You have been blocked for a duration of Indefinitely[edit]

You have been blocked from editing Commons for a duration of Indefinitely for the following reason: Using the Commons email interface to engage in abuse against other editors will not be tolerated; it is a courtesy which is extended to editors, not a right. Moreso, the use of the Commons email interface to engage in threats of legal action against another editor, makes this most unacceptable. I have therefore blocked you indefinitely and revoked access to using email to contact other editors. It is Dcoetzee's wish for you to participate, if you like, in a new COM:DR on affected images, and you will be unblocked if you agree to withdraw the threat of legal action, not use the courtesy email function to engage in abuse against other editors, and remain civil in your interactions with other editors. You may use {{Unblock}} to request an unblock..

If you wish to make useful contributions, you may do so after the block expires. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may add {{unblock|(enter your reason here) ~~~~}} below this message explaining clearly why you should be unblocked. See also the block log. For more information, see Appealing a block.

I don't think that's grammatically correct. "a duration of Indefinitely"? I think it should be "an indefinite duration". I mean, we are trying to educate the masses, aren't we? The undertow (talk) 20:04, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GEO SWAN[edit]

Can you cease from following me on other places around the Internet, such as "Geo Swan added you as a favorite on Picasa Web Albums." The fact that you are Googling my real name and attempting to "friend" me under accounts that use my real name is obviously some passive/aggressive behavior that is not welcomed by me.

While I understand that anyone is free to research me, the fact that we are not on favorable terms, makes this some odd form of stalking. I don't approve. If I was unblocked, I'd email you to quit, or open an AN/I, however, I can do neither of these things. My image was deleted. I want nothing more to do with Commons, so how about leaving me alone, especially off-wiki where our own rules even mention that this type of conduct is frowned upon?

The undertow (talk) 22:09, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I read, elsewhere, that since your block someone was trying to delete all the other images you have uploaded. That sounded shitty, unfair -- but didn't turn out to be true. I looked at the other images you uploaded, and it made me curious as to whether you had published any other worthwhile images, under free liscenses, on other sites.
Yes, I did a google search for images you uploaded. It did take me to an image site. While your public gallery on that single image site didn't have any of your images there earlier today, it did have a button that said "follow" -- which I assumed was a simple automated tool that would quietly inform me when you published new images on your public gallery.
I didn't anticipate that clicking on that button would tell you I had requested you be my friend. I didn't anticipate it would inform you at all.
After I got your email I tried going back to your public gallery to "un-follow" you. But I was informed that image site could no longer find you.
You didn't need to delete your ID there on my account. Geo Swan (talk) 01:18, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
