To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate category and optionally place the images on topic pages (galleries), or do both (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

Thanks for uploading Image:Farquhar_Group.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

astronaut images[edit]

I don't think it is really necessary to change the Author from NASA -> "unknown astronaut". The reason being that all those images are owned by NASA regardless of who the photographer was. If we do know the photographer, it's often nice to add that to the author field as well, but to change all the descriptions to "unknown astronaut" seems a little pointless to me. Also, I think it is better if the "astronaut photography" category is part of the article, and not of the template. The reason being that the only thing the template really should address is the "copyright status" and the categorization of that. Sourcing, subject categorization or all those other things should not really be part of the copyright tag. As a matter of fact, the {{AstronautPhoto}} template is somewhat broken actually. Ooops, it wasn't my intention to change all the NASAs into "unknown astronaut", I did this just while changing the descritption for other reasons. But OK, NASA is sufficient and I will keep it as it is. Regarding the category you're right. This should be rather done in the image than in the license. I wanted to avaoid double and over categorization, please refer to section "Over-categorization" in Commons:Categories#For more appropriate categorization: The category Category:Dallmann laboratory is already assigned to Category:Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. This means that the pictures inside Category:Dallmann laboratory should not have also Category:Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, because otherwise they have this category twice! --Telim tor (talk) 11:01, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Islands[edit]

Hello Telim tor - thanks for helping sort images. However, please do not sort images like Image:Waiheke Island Seen From Above West.jpg into an islands category when the image is already sorted to a specific island's category which in turn is sorted in the more generic "islands of" category. Kalimantan[edit]

Hello Telim tor, why did you redirect Kalimantan category to Borneo? Kalimantan is only part of Borneo, and at the same time specific to Indonesia. We should make a distinction between the two, Djoehana (talk) 22:53, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Djoehana. Because it was catrgorized as "Island", but the name of the island on commons is Borneo. If Kalimanatan is only the indonesian part of that island then we should undo the redirect, but categorize it as region or province or other subdivision of Indonesia. Category:Gulfs of Greece[edit]

Salut Alvaro,

this is a strange case, because a map of the Kara Sea was used as template for this locator map and Kara Sea of course is the center of the map as well as in the file name. But the red marked islands, which are located by this map, are lying in the Laptev Sea. So to avoid misunderstandings, I would not set Kara Sea as category. Nevertheless, if you feel that it's OK, please set the cat again. No problem. You may also think about cat Category:Kara Sea maps which is a bit more precise. Norwegian municipalities cat[edit]

Thanks for fixing categories, appreciated. Be aware however that for images like this file:Trolig Flakstad krk.JPG the category:Flakstad is not just a geographical category but also administrative, meaning that category:Flakstadøy should be in addition to instead of replacing, see my last edit for reference. Thanks for your remark, you're right. I was wondering whether categories belonging to the islands and categories belonging to the communities can be combined in any way. But since some communties cover more than one island and on the other hand some communites belong to parts of islands only, I guess the best is having both categories in parallel. Moin Telim tor,

I have noticed that you had to do some work with pictures I've uploaded. Sorry for that, but that category-thing is tricky. I'm just reading the whole german wp-category of uninhabited islands (fascinating!) and where I find a picture/category that might fit to an article, I add it. Therefor I'm using the commonshelper and I usually take the categories as it recommends. Hope this provides more profit then work, in the end.

Vielen Dank. Of course it is sometimes a laborious work, especially since islands are categorized differently in de.wiki and commons (which are similar to the en.wiki). - A couple of requests please 1) I'm getting this message in red when i check usage on each photo - A database error has occurred Query: SELECT * FROM itwikiquote_p.image WHERE img_name = 'Samoa_scenic_coastline_with_palm_trees_foreground_1.JPG' Function: getImageInfo Error: 1146 Table 'itwikiquote_p.image' doesn't exist (sql-s3).......do you know what this means, please? it says it doesn't exist.

Orkney[edit]

Hi Telim tor - My preference would have been for categorisation along the lines of that for Shetland, ie the main cat would have been named Orkney (and not Orkney Islands), which means you could then have used Orkney Islands in which to categorise the actual islands - my solution was not ideal but was a way to get around this. For islands in the Orkney Islands group, but not in the Unitary authority, I would still include them under the Orkney Islands (with an explanatory note), but also add them to the relevant authority or county category as well. Lofoten[edit]

Hallo Telim tor,

Category:Islands of Lofoten entspricht einen Archipel, das teils in dem Provinz Nordland, teils i Troms liegt. Deshalb sind die kategorien Category:Islands of Nordland und Category:Islands of Troms keine ausreichende Überkategorien - ohne diese Kategorien fehlt die Information der Provinzzugehörigkeit. hmm, also gemäß de.wiki befinden sich alle Inseln der Lofoten im Fylke Nordland (die Vesterålen liegen teils in Troms). Damit wäre die Category:Islands of Lofoten korrekt unter Category:Islands of Nordland kategorisiert. Das macht diese Kat in den Artikeln, die bereits Category:Islands of Lofoten haben, allerdings obsolet; daher hatte ich die Kat entfernt. Sorry, Du hast offenbar Recht. Allerdings wird im Artikel über Hinnøya darauf hingewiesen daß ein Teil von Hinnøya (Anteil der gemeinde Vågan) zu Lofoten gehört, diesen Artikel ist somit in Widerspruch zum Artikel über Lofoten, dort werden nur ganze Inseln aufgezählt.
