More NYC Bus location categories, revisited

You know that I created the category for Category:Buses in the Financial District of Manhattan. But since it has been overcrowded as all hell, I've considered splitting off three sub-categories;

As for Category:Buses in Jamaica, Queens, I'm leaning more towards splitting off sub-cats associated with the terminals in Jamaica. I could split off the ones at the 165th Street Bus Terminal, but there's also the issue of that whole zone between Jamaica (LIRR station) and Jamaica Center Bus Terminal. Naming that segment might be a problem. Plus, there are some that are better off in categories bordering Jamaica. ----DanTD (talk) 14:27, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

@DanTD: I agree about splitting the categories in the Financial District. With Jamaica, there could be a category for "Buses in Jamaica Center" or "Downtown Jamaica" to cover both the bus terminal, LIRR, and Jamaica Avenue in that area, although its not quite clear where that area begins and ends. (There's a whole DNAInfo article about that.) This map has the Jamaica Center BID running along Archer and Jamaica Avenues between Sutphin Boulevard and 169th Street. Tdorante10 (talk) 03:06, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
I think a good start would be to create categories for the two bus terminals.Tdorante10 (talk) 03:07, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Well, I split off the Financial District categories. Hey, did you see my two new ones for the Upper East Side and Upper West Side? ----DanTD (talk) 16:11, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Category:Views from automobiles in New York City

I just split the Category:Views from automobiles in New York City by borough. Be sure to place all future view from automobiles in NYC to their specific borough. ----DanTD (talk) 23:50, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Category:B12 (New York City bus)

Hi, I took the liberty to edit this, in case it was a mistake (easy done). Please revert if it was correct. Also, categories named "Bus routes numbered XY" is (or should be) a child of category "Number XY on buses". Double categorizing "Bus routes numbered XY" and "Number XY on buses" is not needed! It is hardwired in some old templates, incase first one does not exists, but with more categories, and files to fill them, more bus routes can be covered, hopefully as good as the MTA buses... --Anders (talk) 13:48, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Entrances

Heya. Saw you undid my change to Grand Army Plaza/Entrances to Prospect Park. As I see it, the entrance is part of Grand Army Plaza; Grand Army Plaza isn't part of the entrance. I came across it because I was trying to use FastCCI and was surprised that all the images of Grand Army Plaza are considered to be part of Prospect Park because of the catgorization. — Rhododendrites talk01:10, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

@Rhododendrites: The category "Entrances to Prospect Park" refers to several entrances to the park, not just a single one. Grand Army Plaza is a feature of Prospect Park, and one of its entrances, but there are several other entrances as well. Tdorante10 (talk) 01:30, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
There is an entrance in Grand Army Plaza. Grand Army Plaza isn't in the entrance (or Prospect Park -- only part of it overlaps). I'm not saying they shouldn't be connected, only that the entrances should be in GAP category, not the other way around. Just like how Prospect Park is under Brooklyn and Brooklyn isn't under Prospect Park. — Rhododendrites talk01:58, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
In the lead of the Wikipedia article, "Grand Army Plaza, originally known as Prospect Park Plaza, is a public plaza that comprises the northern corner and the main entrance of Prospect Park". Although Grand Army Plaza is located outside the walls of Prospect Park, it was built as part of the park. Thus it is a subcategory of Prospect Park, not the other way around. Similar to how the Grand Army Plaza in Manhattan is a part of Central Park, even though it is located outside its fences. There are entrances into the heart of Prospect Park at Grand Army Plaza, but there are also numerous entrances in other locations of the park, which are not related to Grand Army Plaza. Tdorante10 (talk) 02:04, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
Whoa. TIL. Well if it's part of Prospect Park then the rest is moot. My mistake! — Rhododendrites talk02:28, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
No problem. Tdorante10 (talk) 02:50, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Hudson or New Haven Line?

Since when does the Metro-North Hudson Line use overhead gantries for power? ----DanTD (talk) 12:40, 25 December 2020 (UTC)

LIRR/MetroNorth trains do use third rail. I would guess the overhead wire is for Amtrak trains. Tdorante10 (talk) 16:28, 25 December 2020 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Daytona International Speedway during the COVID-19 pandemic has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Local annual cats

Hi, I noticed you have made comprehensive annual categories for various small but intensively photographed parts of NYC, as in Category:Union Square, Manhattan by year. Good work; should you also be making annual Boro categories? Jim.henderson (talk) 15:26, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

Greenport Municipal Light and Water Plant

I don't remember if I told you before, but the File:Greenport Municipal Light and Water Plant-1.jpg is on the North Fork of Long Island, not in Brooklyn, ----DanTD (talk) 19:22, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

How can this possibly belong under Category:Garden apartments, which is defined as, " Single-story (or sometimes two-story), townhouse-like buildings, often with numerous units facing a common courtyard, or with several buildings scattered in a larger landscaped garden."? - Jmabel ! talk 02:18, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Apologies, it seemed like an appropriate category at the time, but upon further research, most sources define "garden apartments" specifically as low-rise housing, not a general category for apartment complexes with greenspace. Both categories would seem to belong in the Category:Green spaces or a subcategory. Tdorante10 (talk) 13:40, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Garden apartment, at least as I know them in the U.S., have less green space than the typical suburban home (though more than a regular urban apartment). I wouldn't call them "green spaces" unless we also classify freestanding houses that way (which I don't think we should). - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

MTA School Bus Stop Signs

I've been thinking of creating a category called Category:School bus stop signs in New York City for images of signs like this one. But there are so many like this in the Category:School bus signs in the United States category, I'm a bit worried that there won't be too many others in that category left. Should I do it anyway? ----DanTD (talk) 02:17, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

NY photos wanted

Have you seen en:Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City/Wanted photos? Jim.henderson (talk) 21:15, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Do you know if anyone can add requests to that list? Because I have plenty of sites I want to add. --DanTD (talk) 15:56, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Sure, especially your suggestions are sought, @DanTD: since your work is well known among your fellow NYC photographers even though we haven't seen you participating in discussions related to the English WP WikiProject New York City. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:04, 25 July 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, the pandemic has been one of the reasons I haven't been able to get anywhere near the Mason-Dixon Line so easily. Plus, some of the recent changes in policy have been leaving me quite disillusioned. Nevertheless, I try to throw in whatever is needed when I get the chance. ----DanTD (talk) 01:13, 25 July 2021 (UTC)
