Copyright / Freedom of Panorama in the Philippines

Copied from Commons:Help desk.

Hello. I am trying to wrap my head around the copyright rules and Freedom of Panorama in the Philippines, having visited recently and taken pictures. Does it mean that no pictures can be published of any buildings? Or does it only apply to certain buildings with established copyright status? And how does it apply to public places (parks, plazas), highways, geographical features, skyline views from the air, vehicles, etc.? Thank you.Tdorante10 (talk) 13:13, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

In principle no, you cannot upload pictures of buildings in the Philippines, unless:
  • the building's author (i.e. architect) died more than 50 years ago, i.e. pictures of centuries-old buildings are fine.
  • the building's author was the Philippine government, in which case {{PD-PhilippinesGov}} applies.
  • the building is only a minor detail in the entire photo, in which case {{De minimis}} applies.
Good luck. --HyperGaruda (talk) 13:32, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Request for best pics of the year

Hi there. I'm putting together a slideshow of images by NY-area Commons photographers for this weekend's Wikipedia Day event. Typically I take a look through the uploads and pick a couple, but you've uploaded an awful lot over the past year. :) Could you highlight maybe 3-4 of your favorites (only requirement is they were uploaded in 2018, but preferably they're also pictures of NY, too). I'd need this preferably by tomorrow if you're around. Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk16:45, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

@Rhododendrites: Here are my absolute favorites. Sorry if this is excessive; I've been a lot of places in 2018. Also, is the criteria taken in 2018 or uploaded in 2018? If the latter, the last image is two days too late.
This is the long shortlist which I whittled down from. Tdorante10 (talk) 18:54, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Took those top 6 (plus this one, added afterwards because it's quite different from all the others I've compiled so far), which is basically perfect, because that's about the upper limit of images per person represented in the slideshow. Are you coming to Wikipedia Day? — Rhododendrites talk19:59, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

"Unidentified" NYC Subway station location by Billie Grace Ward

One of the pictures of unidentified subway station that you found by Billie Grace Ward and posted here was previously categories as being at either on the IRT Eastern Parkway Line or Nostrand Avenue Line. I just got word from the photographer herself saying it's neither. ----DanTD (talk) 04:56, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

She said, and I quote; "23rd St 1 Train, downtown platform, uptown-most end."

210 Old Country Road in Mineola, NY

I just found some interesting history about one of the buildings in Mineola, New York that you took a picture of. The Denton Building was the first headquarters of the Vanderbilt Long Island Motor Parkway. See for yourself. ----DanTD (talk) 17:42, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

21st Street on the G Train

You've seen stations in worse condition than THIS?! Because that thing looks so bad, I wouldn't be surprised if it collapsed from flooding. I remember seeing NYCS service changes posters telling commuters that they were closing Flushing Avenue (IND Crosstown Line), and I would've been okay if they did this one too. BTW, I took images from this station on the same day, and I'm actually home in Florida now. ----DanTD (talk) 11:40, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

I dunno, there's just something about the 7th Avenue Culver station that stuck in my mind as the worst station in the city. Tdorante10 (talk) 18:42, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
Okay, you've got me convinced. They're both terrible, though. ----DanTD (talk) 19:39, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Regarding your revert on my edit, if you examine carefully, the police automobile's license plate is not the type being used by NYSP (i.e. in the format of 1A23). Instead, it is from TBTA. You may also want to see this as a reference, thank you. 廣九直通車 (talk) 06:11, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Rockaway Park-Beach 116th Street Subway Lamppost Signs

You claimed you didn't know of any other subway station that had old-fashioned signs on the lampposts besides those at Parkchester (IRT Pelham Line), but I know of another. ----DanTD (talk) 16:31, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

This notable example is at Eastchester-Dyre Avenue (IRT Dyre Avenue Line).

"Park triangles"

What exactly is the definition of your category Category:Park triangles in New York City? I see it is a subcat of Category:Triangular buildings (although I don't offhand see any triangular buildings in the category), Category:Places called Triangle (although less than 20% of the subcategories are called Triangle and almost an equal number are called "Square"), Category:Pocket parks in New York City, Category:Urban squares in New York City, and Category:Traffic islands in New York City. Still, it contains things like City Hall Park, which is certainly not a "pocket park"; in fact, the only parent category it even imaginably fits is "Urban squares in New York City". Maybe City Hall Park doesn't really belong as a member of this category? Or Bleecker Playground? (not a traffic island, not really anything like an urban square.) But it's really hard to tell what fits and what doesn't, because the category just doesn't seem clearly defined. - Jmabel ! talk 09:53, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

New Flyer D60HF buses

The MTA retired the New Flyer D60HF buses? I didn't know they were around such a long time. ----DanTD (talk) 15:13, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Fulton Center

Is this really correct? Is the entire space effectively a lobby? I don't know the building but it doesn't look that way to me from the photos. - Jmabel ! talk 05:38, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

Salem station

I've just noticed that you uploaded about 150 images of Salem station. That's a lot of images for anyone to sort through, especially without descriptive filenames. Many of them are near-duplicates, or redundant to others in the set. Would you be okay if I trimmed this number down to make it easier to find the most useful files? Park entrances in New York City

I see you've created new categories for "Park entrances in New York City," many of which are quite specific. Are you planning any for Central Park, or any other big ones outside of Queens? ----DanTD (talk) 01:44, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

I would say I create categories on a "need" basis, either when there are enough pictures to justify a specific category, or when a subject is significant enough to justify it. Central Park and Prospect Park, for example, have a lot of entrances, and also have several which are architecturally unique or significant, which justifies their own categories. But not every park needs a category for every entrance. Tdorante10 (talk) 02:13, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh, but of course every entrance doesn't need a category. I certainly can't disagree with that. I'm just looking forward to the next park entrance categories. ----DanTD (talk) 03:49, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
